From the challenges of joining \u2062the team \u2064to the pilots&#8217; \u200bcamaraderie and sacrifices, the film offers a close-up view of this iconic squadron.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<p><?xml encoding=\"utf-8\" ?><?xml encoding=\"utf-8\" ?><?xml encoding=\"utf-8\" ?><\/p>\n<div class=\"article-content\">\n<p>If ever a subject was suited for IMAX, it has to be the U.S. Navy\u2019s elite demonstration squadron, the Blue Angels \u2014 known for jaw-dropping maneuvers with four F\/A-18 jets flying together at 400 miles per hour, only inches apart. <\/p>\n<p>Now actor and producer Glen Powell, known for depicting fighter pilots in \u201cTop Gun: Maverick\u201d and \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/11\/29\/if-you-liked-top-gun-you-have-to-see-the-showstopping-korean-war-drama-devotion\/\">Devotion<\/a>,\u201d and producer J.J. Abrams of the \u201cMission: Impossible\u201d franchise have collaborated to capture \u201cThe Blue Angels\u201d up close and personal. There are no second chances. It is truly a life and death demonstration.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In an interview with Capt. Greg Wooldridge, longtime commander of the Blue Angels, he told me the film is visually \u201cunparalleled and unmatched\u201d because of the production crew\u2019s expertise.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey got Kevin LaRosa, who did aerial coordination on \u2018Top Gun: Maverick,\u2019 into a helicopter with these Sony Venice cameras and the Phantom high-speed camera that (films) a thousand frames a second,\u201d said Wooldridge. \u201cIt\u2019s never happened before, and it will last forever.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Film director Paul Crowder (\u201cOnce In A Lifetime\u201d) noted their production helicopter \u2014 with a battery of bulky cameras \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aboutamazon.com\/news\/entertainment\/blue-angels-documentary-air-show-planes-pilots\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">was flown<\/a> in formation with the Blue Angels\u2019 maneuvers, which had never been done before. \u201cTo get the Navy to approve that and to get the pilots comfortable enough to trust us to put a helicopter in the middle of their formation, those were the real difficulties.\u201d <\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-b732830fc0feeedf4e5a9e87f616bd8e fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-6\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-b732830fc0feeedf4e5a9e87f616bd8e\"><\/div>\n<p>Similar to the recent Tom Cruise hit film, audiences get to see the pilots\u2019 camaraderie, teamwork, and a bit of competitive bravado among them. Amid the spectacular visuals and behind-the-scenes squadron meetings, the film also spotlights the sacrifices of military families. <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Service and Spectacle<\/h2>\n<p>In a fleet of 3,700 Navy pilots, only six are assigned to the Blue Angels, each for two years. With flight leader Capt. Brian Kesselring at the helm, viewers meet two \u201cnewbies,\u201d Chris Kapuschansky and Scott Goossens, who must learn the squadron\u2019s complex choreography.<\/p>\n<p>Filmmaker Crowder, whose crew spent a year with the pilots, was impressed by what he saw. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat the newbie pilots go through when getting into this team, it\u2019s a lot of jargon to get up to speed on,\u201d said Crowder. \u201cThey have to go through high-g training in the centrifuge. And they\u2019re going from fleet flying to flying 18 inches apart \u2014 it\u2019s very different, they\u2019ve never flown that close to a jet.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-19a42b49d26b639a57c070eef2221d14 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-10\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-19a42b49d26b639a57c070eef2221d14\"><\/div>\n<p>For myself, nearly every summer my dad loaded me and my brothers into the family van and took us to watch an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/cuomo-wasnt-the-first-times-up-leaders-have-history-of-covering-up-liberal-scandals\/\" title=\"Cuomo Wasn\u2019t the First: Time\u2019s Up Leaders Have History of Covering Up Liberal Scandals\">air show<\/a>. My wife \u2014 an \u201cAir Force brat,\u201d as she says \u2014 helps our family continue this tradition, marking air shows on our kids\u2019 calendar months in advance. The sights and sounds of supersonic jets and massive engines make for a memorable afternoon, but the crowds seem to have thinned over the years. <\/p>\n<p>In \u201cThe Blue Angels\u201d film, audiences who\u2019ve only seen these maneuvers from the ground suddenly see it all from the cockpit and helicopter shots that are captured midair in high-def slow motion.<\/p>\n<p>If air shows give a window into life on base, this documentary brings audiences a few steps closer. Much of the flight action occurs at the squadron\u2019s training base, Naval Air Facility El Centro in southern California \u2014 which will look familiar from \u201cTop Gun\u201d \u2014 and also at the Blue Angels\u2019 home base in Pensacola.<\/p>\n<p>In the Florida Panhandle, the film slows its breakneck pace to go into the home of Capt. Kesselring; his Marine officer wife, Ashley; and their two young children.  <\/p>\n<p>\u201cSure, they\u2019re elite pilots, but they\u2019ve got life going on in the background,\u201d said Crowder. \u201cYou\u2019ve got kids to bring up. Some of the squadron personnel were in the midst of getting married. We tried to show as much of that as we could.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey strive for perfection in military life, and they take it seriously because they have families who are depending on them.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Larger Purpose<\/h2>\n<p>Capt. Wooldridge, an executive producer on the film, is the only commanding officer in U.S. Naval history to lead the Blue Angels on three separate tours.<\/p>\n<p>Despite his legendary leadership of the demonstration squadron, he is effusive about the meticulous work of everybody \u201con the team,\u201d which the aviators depend on.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018You might be called \u2018boss,\u2019\u201d Wooldridge told me. \u201cBut you\u2019re no more important than the supply officers and maintenance crews and every enlisted person on base. Because if each person doesn\u2019t do their job to the best of their ability, then everything breaks down.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Wooldridge shows up in a few scenes as the current leader, Capt. Kesselring, plays an integral role in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueangels.navy.mil\/team\/officers.htm\">choosing<\/a> the next commanding officer and new pilots on the squadron. While only candidates with 3,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/u-s-marines-set-to-test-lightning-carrier-concept-with-20-f-35bs\/\" title=\"U.S. Marines Set to Test Lightning Carrier Concept With 20 F-35Bs\">000 flight hours<\/a> and who\u2019ve commanded a tactical jet squadron can apply, \u201cThe Blue Angels\u201d shows potential flight leaders assembling from across the globe. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s an honor to get to represent the entire Navy and Marine Corps in front of the American public for a full two years,\u201d said Wooldridge. \u201cYou realize how important it is for the Navy to present themselves at their best. It\u2019s fun to fly the jets, but what we get to do is also important.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>From the training regimen with long grueling days to being apart from family for months at a time, the Blue Angels\u2019 work is shown as far from glamorous. But the squadron also aims for their \u201crock star\u201d shows to educate on the nature of military service for one\u2019s country. <\/p>\n<p>Wooldridge speaks with appreciation for Navy personnel serving on the front lines. \u201cThey\u2019re struggling out there, at sea for eight months or longer.
