The prosecutor highlighted inconsistencies and questioned\u200d the\u2064 business records&#8217; legality. (Christine Cornell via AP, Pool)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Steinglass pointed to a footnote from a 2018 Office of Government Ethics form while laughing about how the defense cited the form to suggest that all of Trump\u2019s business records were legally sound.<\/p>\n<p>The footnote from the form stated, \u201cln 2016 expenses were incurred by one of Donald J. Trump\u2019s attorneys, Michael Cohen. Mr. Cohen sought reimbursement of those expenses and Mr. Trump fully reimbursed Mr. Cohen\u00a0in 2017.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf he was still doing legal work, why wasn\u2019t he paid a dime in 2018?\u201d Steinglass asked. \u201cWhen the reimbursement was done, the payments stopped.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Trump is charged with 34 felony counts for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/trump-sees-delays-in-civil-fraud-verdict-and-election-interference-trial\/\" title=\"Trump's civil fraud verdict and election interference trial face delays\">allegedly falsifying business records related<\/a> to reimbursement payments he made to Cohen for the hush money Cohen paid to porn star Stormy Daniels to buy her silence ahead of the 2016 election about an alleged affair with Trump that the former president denies. Prosecutors introduced as evidence 11 checks, 12 ledger entries, and 11 invoices used to pay Cohen a total of $420,000 in 2017.<\/p>\n<p>Steinglass at one point Tuesday evening pointed out that his closing arguments had been going on for an extraordinary length of time given that he had been talking to the jury since 2 p.m. local time and the closing arguments were continuing as 8 p.m. approached.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know what you\u2019re thinking: Is this guy going to go through every single month\u2019s worth of checks?\u201d Steinglass said to the jury. \u201cThe answer is no.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure><figcaption>Former President Donald Trump returns from a break at Manhattan Criminal Court, Tuesday, May 28, 2024, in New York. (AP Photo\/Julia Nikhinson)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Trump posted to Truth Social on Tuesday, calling this section of the prosecution\u2019s closing arguments \u201cBORING!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Andrew Cherkasky, a New York-based attorney and former federal prosecutor, told the <em>Washington Examiner <\/em>that \u201cthere is a saying among trial lawyers: \u2018I\u2019ve heard a good closing argument, I\u2019ve heard a long closing argument, but I\u2019ve never heard a good long closing argument.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p>New York lawyer Rebecca Rose <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/live-news\/trump-trial-new-york-closing-arguments-may-28\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">told<\/a> Fox News the prosecution appears to be attempting to \u201cthrow a lot at the jury\u201d in an effort to convince them through the prosecution\u2019s apparent thoroughness.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u00a0think their strategy is: Throw a lot at the jury, make the closing seem so long that the jury will start to say, \u2018Well, that closing was so long, they must have had a lot to say, they must have proved their case,&#8217;\u201d Rose said.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CLICK HERE TO READ MORE FROM THE WASHINGTON EXAMINER<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The jury took a break just before 7 p.m. after Steinglass asked whether the closing arguments could continue a little longer. They indicated the prosecution may move ahead into the evening, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/live-news\/trump-trial-new-york-closing-arguments-may-28\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>according<\/a> to CNN.<\/p>\n<p>Presiding Judge Juan Merchan told prosecutors that the jury has been under the impression that they would work up until 8 p.m., telling the prosecution, \u201cYou\u2019ve been going for four hours now,\u201d and suggested that prosecutors finish by 8 p.m.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In New York, the hush money trial against former President Donald Trump saw jurors present for closing arguments.
