In a Coeur \u200dd\u2019Alene, \u200dIdaho \u2064jury\u200c ruling, a drag queen was granted over $1.1 billion in damages in a defamation lawsuit against conservative blogger Summer \u200cBushnell. Bushnell \u2064was convicted of defamation for\u200d spreading untrue allegations about drag artist Eric Posey,\u2064 triggering distress and a police inquiry. Posey \u200bwas awarded compensatory and punitive damages.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<header> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/news\/\">  News <\/a>   <span> <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/author\/ajose\/\">  <\/a> <\/p>\n<p> <span>   By <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/author\/ajose\/%20\"><span>Andrew Jose<\/span><\/a> <\/span> <span>   May 28, 2024 at 3:06pm <\/span> <\/span>  <\/header>\n<section>\n<p>A jury in Coeur d\u2019Alene, Idaho, has awarded a drag queen over $1.1 billion in damages in a defamation case he brought against a conservative blogger.<\/p>\n<p>The jury in Kootenai County District Court found blogger Summer Bushnell guilty of defamation in a unanimous decision, the <a href=\"https:\/\/cdapress.com\/news\/2024\/may\/24\/jury-awards-11-million-in-damages-to-drag-performer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Coeur D\u2019Alene Press<\/a> reported Friday.<\/p>\n<p>The jurors granted drag queen Eric Posey of Post Falls $926,000 in compensatory damages for alleged <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/judge-judy-files-defamation-suit-makes-clear-things-wont-cheap-going-cost\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">defamation<\/a> and an extra $250,000 in punitive damages after finding Bushnell made claims with \u201creckless disregard\u201d for truth, knowing that her statements were not true, the newspaper reported.<\/p>\n<p>The defamation case is related to a video Bushnell posted of a <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Henrik_Palmgren\/status\/1535801099914842112\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">June 11, 2022, drag show<\/a> in Coeur d\u2019Alene where Posey was performing as Mona Liza Million.<\/p>\n<p>The show made headlines after 31 members of the militant group Patriotic Front were arrested after being found armed with riot gear near the event, <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/coeur-dalene-idaho-government-and-politics-arrests-01fd15f6d3b3bcab9404106c85f673c3#\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Associated Press<\/a> reported.<\/p>\n<p>Bushnell shared a doctored video of herself talking about the arrests and included edited footage from Posey\u2019s performance.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy did no one arrest the man in a dress who flashed his genitalia to minors and people in the crowd?\u201d she said in the clip, according to the Press.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo one said anything about it and there\u2019s video. I\u2019m going to put up a blurred video to prove it,\u201d the blogger said, claiming the clip showed \u201cfully exposed genitals.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bushnell\u2019s video sparked a police investigation.<\/p>\n<p>However, upon reviewing unedited footage, city prosecutors declined to file charges, determining that contrary to Bushnell\u2019s claims, no indecent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/gay-activist-known-mocking-christians-dressing-nun-arrested-public-perversion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">exposure<\/a> was caught on camera.<\/p>\n<p>Bosey said Bushnell\u2019s false claims caused him significant distress, according to the Press.<\/p>\n<p>The drag performer claimed to have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/kevin-clinesmith-altered-an-email-in-the-trump-russia-probe-to-keep-it-going-he-just-received-probation\/\" title=\"Kevin Clinesmith Altered An Email In The Trump-Russia Probe To Keep It Going. He Just Received Probation.\">received death threats<\/a> and encountered harassment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cImagine being in a dark hole where you have nobody and you felt the whole world turn their back on you,\u201d he said in court Thursday, according to the Press.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut somehow, you were surrounded by warriors, true people of Idaho \u2014 not transplants, true people of this soil. I am fortunate to say I have people like that around me, people that lifted me up,\u201d Posey said.<\/p>\n<p>Bushnell\u2019s attorney, Colton Boyles, told jurors the defendant\u2019s comments were \u201cclose to the line\u201d but did not meet the threshold for defamation.<\/p>\n<p>Although his client testified that she did not really see the \u201cfully exposed genitals,\u201d Boyles said Bushnell\u2019s \u201chonest belief\u201d was that Posey had exposed himself.<\/p>\n<p>Jurors met with the drag queen at the end of the trial to shake hands with him and hug him, <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/drag-performer-defamation-blogger-idaho-c0f3188081e17843059b27d19d5be980\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Associated Press<\/a> reported.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">BREAKING: A jury has awarded more than $1.1 million in damages to the drag performer who sued a blogger for defamation.<a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/FzjFetBVCe\">https:\/\/t.co\/FzjFetBVCe<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Kaye Thornbrugh (@KayeThornbrugh) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/KayeThornbrugh\/status\/1794140985506832646?\">May 24, 2024<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m so sorry you went through this,\u201d one juror told Posey.<\/p>\n<p>Bushnell manages the blog The Bushnell Report, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/05\/26\/us\/eric-posey-drag-performer-defamation-case.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The New York Times<\/a>.
