The influx of newcomers\u2063 from California has intensified the housing demand \u2064in Nevada, revealing a nationwide \u2062housing crisis reflected in voters&#8217; \u200cconcerns.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Swing-state <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/nevada\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Nevada<\/a> voters consider soaring <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/housing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>housing<\/a> prices a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/rnc-gop-candidates-will-win-if-they-focus-on-economy-crime\/\" title=\"RNC: GOP Candidates Will Win If They Focus on Economy, Crime\">top issue ahead<\/a> of the 2024 election, a challenge for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/joe-biden\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Biden campaign<\/a> as it trails former President Donald Trump in some polls. <\/p>\n<p>Since 2016, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/u-s-median-home-price-hits-record-405k\/\" title=\"U.S. Median Home Price Hits Record 5k\">home sale prices<\/a> in Nevada\u2019s Clark County have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/politics\/story\/2024-04-09\/biden-trump-california-housing-crisis-nevada-arizona\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>risen<\/a> by 50%, and median rental prices in the county, which is home to Las Vegas, are still 30% higher than they were before the pandemic, according to Apartment List. <\/p>\n<p>A University of Nevada at Las Vegas study also found that seven of the 10 most common jobs in Las Vegas don\u2019t pay enough to afford a studio apartment; and a recent <a href=\"https:\/\/pro-assets.morningconsult.com\/wp-uploads\/2024\/05\/Bloomberg-Election-Tracking-Wave-8-Toplines-Crosstabs.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>poll<\/a> found that 51% of Nevada residents considered housing to be very important going into the presidential election, more than issues including abortion, climate change, the Russia-Ukraine war, or guns. <\/p>\n<p>Polling suggests the housing crisis could have a pivotal impact on the 2024 presidential election. In early May, a <a href=\"https:\/\/investors.redfin.com\/news-events\/press-releases\/detail\/1062\/redfin-survey-majority-of-u-s-homeowners-and-renters-say\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Redfin<\/a> survey found that 53% of U.S. homeowners and renters said housing affordability would affect how they vote in 2024, while \u200b\u200b64% of respondents said housing affordability made them feel negative about the economy.<\/p>\n<p>President Joe Biden\u2019s latest visit to the Silver State came in March when he touted the $1 billion his American Rescue Plan has provided toward Nevada\u2019s housing crisis. At the time, he conceded, \u201cFor too many people that dream of having a good home, this still feels out of reach.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As thousands of newcomers have streamed into Nevada from neighboring California, the Sun Belt state has seen the costs of home ownership escalate under a strained housing supply. <\/p>\n<p>According to the U.S. Census Bureau, almost 158,000 people moved to Nevada from California between 2020 and 2024, making up 43% of all new residents in the state. Additionally, the Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles states that approximately 250,000 Californians moved to Nevada between 2015 and 2019, which was more than any other state.<\/p>\n<p>A 2022 <a href=\"https:\/\/bipartisanpolicy.org\/report\/housing-supply-trends-50-states\/\">study<\/a> by the Bipartisan Policy Center found that while Nevada\u2019s statewide population had increased by nearly 434,000 residents from 2010 to 2020, the housing supply had grown by only about 131,000 homes.<\/p>\n<p>Nevada\u2019s housing crisis is being mirrored nationwide. While inflation remains the top economic concern for American voters, the housing market has edged its way into voters\u2019 top tissues. Mortgage rates have soared as the Federal Reserve keeps interest rates restrictive,\u00a0housing prices have increased because of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/2605246\/home-economics-is-the-us-missing-2-million-houses-or-20-million\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>lack of supply<\/a>, and Zillow reported that home buyers in 2024 need 80% more income to purchase a home than they did in 2020.<\/p>\n<figure><figcaption>FILE \u2013 President Joe Biden speaks at the Washoe Democratic Party Office in Reno, Nevada, March 19, 2024. The visit was part of a broader strategy to shore up support with a key part of his base in Nevada: union workers. Biden has been relentless in these efforts, even making history as the first president to join \u200b\u200bmembers of the United Auto Workers in the picket line last year during their strike.
