The &#8220;corporate sustainability due \u200cdiligence directive&#8221; requires companies to address human rights\u2062 and environmental impacts and applies penalties \u200cfor non-compliance. Or in the fine print \u2014 definite corporate action concerning climate change; social justice; and diversity, equity and inclusion.<\/p>\n<p>Basically, it\u2019s applied Marxism without all the goofy theories \u2014 tyranny with nuance, we could call it.<\/p>\n<p>The EU Council approved what it called the \u201ccorporate sustainability due diligence directive\u201d on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>Under the new rules, companies \u201cwill have to take measures to prevent, identify and mitigate any adverse impact on human rights or the environment,\u201d the council said on its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.consilium.europa.eu\/en\/policies\/corporate-sustainability\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPenalties and civil liability for violating those obligations will also be applicable,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Just adopted: the corporate sustainability due diligence directive \u2705<\/p>\n<p>Companies will need to identify and mitigate any adverse impact on human rights and the environment, with respect to:<br \/> \ud83d\udccctheir own operations<br \/> \ud83d\udcccthose of their subsidiaries<br \/> \ud83d\udcccthose carried out by their partners<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 EU Council (@EUCouncil) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/EUCouncil\/status\/1793928850256146443?\">May 24, 2024<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Too bad for Europe\u2019s big businesses, you might say.<\/p>\n<p>No.<\/p>\n<p>Too bad for Europe\u2019s small businesses. And for big and small businesses outside of Europe, including the United States.<\/p>\n<p>Companies doing a certain amount of business in the EU will automatically come under the directive.<\/p>\n<p>And there\u2019s more.<\/p>\n<p>Your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/montana-entrepreneur-legally-barred-from-hauling-trash-because-established-players-dont-want-the-competition\/\" title=\"Montana Entrepreneur Legally Barred from Hauling Trash Because Established Players Don\u2019t Want the Competition\">trash-hauling business<\/a> in Peoria, Illinois, might be affected by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/unknown-story-thomas-sowell-marxist-became-conservative-champion-generation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">leftist bent<\/a> of the European Union. Maybe your Denver accounting firm or Kansas City meat wholesaling company.<\/p>\n<p>Because tucked into the corporate sustainability due diligence directive are rules for businesses upstream in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/100-gop-reps-bidens-3-5-trillion-bill-death-blow-americas-supply-chain\/\">supply chain<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In recent decades, the focus has intensified on what is known as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/target-to-slash-prices-for-tvs-furniture-because-of-inventory-glut\/\" title=\"Target To Slash Prices For TVs, Furniture Because Of Inventory Glut\">supply chain management<\/a>. Put simply, my supplier, or my supplier\u2019s supplier, or even a supplier beyond that, may directly affect my business.<\/p>\n<p>For instance, Walmart stocks Crest toothpaste.<\/p>\n<p>Procter &#038; Gamble manufactures Crest, so P&#038;G is Walmart\u2019s first-tier supplier.<\/p>\n<p>P&#038;G buys chemicals, abrasives and packaging for Crest from various manufacturers. Those would be considered Walmart\u2019s second-tier suppliers and P&#038;G\u2019s first-tier suppliers.<\/p>\n<p>Usually, supply chain management concepts go no further back than the third tier, and they have companies like Walmart and others monitoring prices, quality and availability of products often three tiers back in the supply chain.<\/p>\n<p>Crest toothpaste is a simple product, but supply chain scrutiny can increase if our final product is something like a bulldozer or a jetliner.<\/p>\n<p>So what does that have to do with the European Union and, say, our fictitious trash-hauling business in Peoria?<\/p>\n<p>Plenty. Because not only does the EU\u2019s new directive apply to companies doing business in Europe, but those companies also must see that their suppliers comply as well.<\/p>\n<p>Do you see where this is going?<\/p>\n<p>The directive will apply beginning in 2027 in Europe to companies with 5,000 employees that do $1.63 billion in business, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/jonmcgowan\/2024\/05\/24\/eu-gives-final-approval-to-corporate-sustainability-due-diligence-law\/?sh=b555212d7b22\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Forbes<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The next year, minimums will be 3,000 employees and $977 million, and in 2029, it will apply to companies with 1,000 employees doing $488 million worth of business.<\/p>\n<div id=\"firefly-poll-container\">\n<p>Should America ever be more like Europe?<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>So suppose a manufacturing company in Peoria meets those values in its European market.<\/p>\n<p>Not only will the company have to bow to the new directive, but it will have to demonstrate that its suppliers do, too.<\/p>\n<p>So if your local Peoria waste disposal company hauls the waste of that manufacturer, guess who will be mandating how you do your business?<\/p>\n<p>Right. The European Union.<\/p>\n<p>So what might this mean for you, this ESG stuff?<\/p>\n<p>The Heartland Institute has offered <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/jonmcgowan\/2024\/05\/24\/eu-gives-final-approval-to-corporate-sustainability-due-diligence-law\/?sh=34709872d7b2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">multiple primers<\/a> on ESG, concepts that would bring smiles to the faces of Karl Marx, Vladimir Lenin and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.<\/p>\n<p>Institute researcher <a href=\"https:\/\/heartland.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/2023-ESG-ReportvWeb-1-4.27.23.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jack McPherrin<\/a> wrote that ESG is promoted by the oligarchy in which wealth has been concentrated in recent decades, the usual suspects including the United Nations, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/world-elites-flock-davos-pay-attention-world-economic-forum-considers-top-threat\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">World Economic Forum<\/a>, the International Monetary Fund, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/blackrock-ceo-says-ashamed-role-woke-esg-push-quickly-tries-backtrack\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Black Rock<\/a>, State Street, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/op-ed-banks-fighting-let-esg-investors-fund-far-left-political-goals\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">big banks<\/a> and regulators.<\/p>\n<p>Besides harming the economy by thwarting hydrocarbon energy and agricultural operations, ESG crushes national sovereignty and bypasses democratic institutions, according to McPherrin.<\/p>\n<p>It also \u201creduces individual liberty\u2019 and \u201csupplants free-market captalism with a top-down, centrally planned economic model under the control of a handful of monopolistic corporations and international bodies,\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n<p>ESG wastes resources and \u201ccould directly endanger U.S. national security,\u201d McPherrin said.<\/p>\n<p>How\u2019s that for standards of operation for your trash business?<\/p>\n<p>The globalists cannot abide the idea of people making their own decisions, and they are serious about directly applying their debased ideas. Where they can\u2019t do it directly, they\u2019ll do it indirectly, through things like supply chains.<\/p>\n<p>Years ago, the Nixon administration used to raise the question about optics outside of Washington with the question, \u201cHow will this play in Peoria?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For our fictitious Peoria trash company \u2014 and everyone else \u2014 ESG will not play well.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<div>\n<p><b><i>A Note from Our Deputy Managing Editor:<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p><i><span>\u201cWe don\u2019t even know if an election will be held in 2024.\u201d Those 12 words have been stuck in my head since I first read them. <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span>Former Lt.
