Governor Gavin Newsom \u2064signed the law despite warnings about its\u2064 expenses. Health\u200c providers fear\u2064 service cuts, while California grapples with a $45 billion deficit.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<p>California\u2019s legislature is trying to delay a new $25 minimum wage for health care workers after Democrats realized it will have larger ramifications for the state\u2019s budget.<\/p>\n<p>Governor Gavin Newsom (D) signed the law back in October despite warnings from legislative analysts about the high cost to the state itself.<\/p>\n<p>The Democrat-controlled legislature is now scrambling to delay the <a href=\"https:\/\/leginfo.legislature.ca.gov\/faces\/billNavClient.xhtml?bill_id=202320240SB525\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">law<\/a>, which is set to take effect on June 1 and would start phasing in a $25 minimum wage for healthcare workers by 2028.<\/p>\n<p>The state has predicted the new minimum wage law will likely cost California another $4 billion a year. This is mainly because Medicaid costs would jump, and the state would have to pay more to its own workers at state-owned <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/bidens-homeland-security-department-illegal-immigrants-should-get-vaccine\/\" title=\"Biden\u2019s Homeland Security Department: Illegal Immigrants Should Get Vaccine\">health care facilities<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Health care providers have also warned that mandating higher pay could force them to pare down patient services. Some California hospitals <a href=\"https:\/\/calmatters.org\/health\/2024\/05\/minimum-wage-health-care-deadline\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">say<\/a> they expect the law to cost them tens of millions of dollars.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, California\u2019s\u00a0budget deficit is now a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/californias-25-an-hour-minimum-wage-boomerang-newsom-healthcare-d86c8515\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">whopping<\/a> $45 billion.<\/p>\n<p>Last week, Newsom presented his latest budget proposal. He said that the governor\u2019s office, the legislature, and supporters of the new minimum wage are currently working out a deal on potential changes to the law.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis budget will not be signed without that deal that we committed to being addressed,\u201d Newsom <a href=\"https:\/\/calmatters.org\/health\/2024\/05\/minimum-wage-health-care-deadline\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>However, it is not clear whether a deal will be reached before Saturday, when the law takes effect. It is also not clear what the sticking points are in the negotiations.<\/p>\n<p>If no changes are made by this weekend, the minimum wage for health care workers will jump to between $18 and $23 an hour, depending on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/ten-gop-senators-counter-bidens-1-9-trillion-relief-plan-request-meeting\/\" title=\"Ten GOP Senators Counter Biden\u2019s .9 Trillion Relief Plan, Request Meeting\">health care provider<\/a>. By 2028, almost all workers at health care facilities in California will be paid at least $25 an hour.<\/p>\n<p>Some health care facilities have <a href=\"https:\/\/calmatters.org\/health\/2024\/05\/minimum-wage-health-care-deadline\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">already<\/a> begun raising wages for workers in anticipation of the law. Others have not done so yet.<\/p>\n<p>California\u2019s current minimum wage for all workers is $16 an hour.<\/p>\n<p>In September, Newsom also signed a law establishing a new $20 an hour minimum wage for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/amazon-wants-15-federal-minimum-wage-reports-small-businesses-would-be-hardest-hit\/\" title=\"Amazon Wants  Federal Minimum Wage; Reports: Small Businesses Would Be Hardest Hit\">fast food workers<\/a>, which kicked in last month. However, the governor carved out several expeditions, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecentersquare.com\/california\/article_7f58528e-ebbb-11ee-88bd-27a7c58ce048.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">including<\/a> for fast food restaurants located on certain <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/land-for-cattle-grazing-oil-drilling-would-be-up-for-lease-to-conservationists-under-new-biden-administration-proposal\/\" title=\"Biden proposes leasing land for conservationists to graze cattle and drill oil.\">government-owned lands<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Since the law was signed, California fast food restaurants have increased prices by 10% overall, more than any other state, <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/GMA\/Food\/california-restaurants-face-stark-realities-burdens-after-minimum\/story?id=109741431\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according<\/a> to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/report-russian-invasion-of-ukraine-may-further-strain-chip-supply-for-tech-auto-industries\/\" title=\"Report: Russian Invasion of Ukraine May Further Strain Chip Supply for Tech, Auto Industries\">market research firm<\/a>, Dataessential.<\/p>\n<p>One Pizza Hut franchise operator said it was laying off 1,200 drivers, and Chipotle and Mcdonald\u2019s said they would raise prices as a result of the law.<\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>California&#8217;s lawmakers seek to postpone a $25 healthcare minimum wage due to budget concerns.
