Tim Walz (D-MN) signed a bill on Tuesday that requires pay minimums for Uber and Lyft rideshare drivers and also provides them with new insurance provisions following a multiyear battle in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/minnesota\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Minnesota<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>In March, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/minneapolis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Minneapolis<\/a> City Council voted in favor of increasing wages for drivers, prompting Uber and Lyft to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/policy\/finance-and-economy\/2921525\/uber-and-lyft-bail-on-minneapolis-following-city-council-forcing-higher-driver-pay\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>confirm their intent <\/a>to leave the Twin Cities. The Minnesota legislature produced a last-minute bill to ensure the companies would not leave Minnesota. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cProtecting workers is a priority for our administration. This bill is a reflection of our commitment to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/liberal-journalists-shame-hardworking-americans-for-suffering-under-the-biden-economy\/\" title=\"Liberal media blames diligent Americans for hardships in Biden's economy\">ensuring fair wages<\/a> and safe working conditions for rideshare drivers,\u201d Walz said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/mn.gov\/governor\/newsroom\/press-releases\/#\/detail\/appId\/1\/id\/625607\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>statement<\/a>, applauding the lawmakers who found \u201ca solution on this pressing issue.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSometimes, legislation like this takes a long time to negotiate,\u201d said state Sen. Omar Fateh, a Democrat who worked on negotiations on the bill. \u201cWe spent the day. We got it right.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/minnesota\/news\/minnesota-governor-signs-rideshare-bill-uber-lyft\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>compromised raise<\/a> is $1.28 per mile and $0.31 per minute, which differs from the $1.40 per mile and $0.51 per minute that the Minneapolis City Council approved. The bill also gives drivers benefits, including what is being called the \u201cstrongest insurance provision for rideshare drivers in the U.S.\u201d The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/dems-turn-major-china-bill-into-green-slush-fund\/\" title=\"Dems Turn Major China Bill Into Green Slush Fund\">bill falls short<\/a> of categorizing rideshare drivers as independent contractors, as other states have moved to do.<\/p>\n<p>Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey vetoed the City Council\u2019s measure, but it was able to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/2908715\/uber-lyft-threaten-leave-minneapolis-council-passes-pay-floor\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>override<\/a> his veto.
