But if you watched NBC News\u2019 \u201cMeet The Press\u201d on Sunday, you might not know that. The left-wing outlet invited its favorite Democrat secretaries of state as well as two of the most milquetoast Republican election officials to talk about Democrats\u2019 favorite election-related talking points. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want to turn now to something that\u2019s getting a lot of attention: efforts to prevent noncitizens from voting,\u201d host Kristen Welker <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/meet-the-press\/meet-press-may-26-2024-n1309920\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a>, referring to the Republican-led SAVE Act, a bill in Congress that would require proof of citizenship to register to vote. \u201cWe should note that it\u2019s exceedingly rare, and yet some officials believe it\u2019s an urgent matter, including yourself,\u201d she asked Republican Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger. \u201cWhy? And we should note, it\u2019s already against the law to vote if you\u2019re a noncitizen.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2-long d-flex justify-content-center\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center; \" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-1952816591\">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1379703300879-0\" class=\"mb-30\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-a72af40ad9eac1bd244ab3920b643c3b fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-a72af40ad9eac1bd244ab3920b643c3b\"><\/div>\n<p><strong>[READNEXT:[READNEXT:<a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/04\/16\/media-pretend-voters-saying-theyre-citizens-is-the-same-as-proving-theyre-citizens\/\">Media Pretend Voters Saying They\u2019re Citizens Is The Same As Proving They\u2019re Citizens<\/a>]<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s true that alien voting in federal elections is \u201cagainst the law,\u201d but it\u2019s also true that currently, enforcement of that law is based on the honor system. Instead of tearing down the assumptions inherent in Welker\u2019s question \u2014 and the whole segment \u2014 Raffensperger played along, answering the question as if he and other Republicans should have to defend why only citizens should vote in the election, instead of Democrats defending why they oppose the commonsense reforms.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI believe only American citizens should be voting in our elections,\u201d Raffensperger said, noting the state has citizenship verification and has found 1,600 people who attempted to register but could not prove their citizenship and were therefore prevented from getting on voter rolls. The secretary also pointed out that the state has successfully fought efforts from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/president-of-taxpayer-funded-antiracist-group-funneled-nearly-300k-to-husbands-law-firm\/\" title=\"President of Taxpayer-Funded Antiracist Group Funneled Nearly 0K to Husband\u2019s Law Firm\">left-wing organizations<\/a> that sought to stop the state from verifying citizenship.<\/p>\n<p>Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson interjected, arguing all states are already ensuring \u201cthe federal provisions\u201d prohibiting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/japan-bans-new-entries-of-foreigners-after-virus-variant-arrives\/\" title=\"Japan bans new entries of foreigners after virus variant arrives\">foreign nationals<\/a> from voting are \u201cprotected.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-73e96d9cccc664e2b8975d65ffb0d82f fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-6\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-73e96d9cccc664e2b8975d65ffb0d82f\"><\/div>\n<p>Raffensperger pointed out that beyond the federal law requiring voters to attest to their citizenship, there is \u201cno provision for state law other than state law.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But what he <em>didn\u2019t<\/em> say is that currently, voters registering on a federal application need only to affirm their citizenship by checking a box rather than providing documentary proof of citizenship (DPOC). Saying there is \u201cno provision for state law other than state law\u201d fails to underscore why the national SAVE Act is so crucial and fails to make an easy rebuttal to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/leaked-state-department-memo-sanctions-black-lives-matter-flags-banners-indicates-support-for-radical-blm-agenda-report\/\" title=\"Leaked State Department Memo Sanctions \u2018Black Lives Matter\u2019 Flags, Banners; Indicates Support For Radical BLM Agenda: Report\u00a0\">left-wing narrative<\/a> that the legislation is a waste of resources. Besides, it would be foolishly optimistic to expect states led by Democrats who benefit from lax voting laws to share Republicans\u2019 appetite for removing foreign nationals from voter rolls. <\/p>\n<p>What\u2019s more, in the past the federal government has actively prohibited states like Arizona from enforcing stronger voter citizenship laws when residents register to vote in federal elections. But Raffensperger didn\u2019t address that, not even when Arizona Secretary of State Adrian Fontes handed him the opportunity to do so.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cArizona, by the way, we\u2019ve had a [citizen] voting law on the books for a long time, and we actually have a separate ballot for folks who are federal-only voters,\u201d Fontes said. \u201cOur standards are higher than everybody else\u2019s, but we\u2019ve still got folks making crazy allegations that they\u2019re not.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-5072553efebb7939a2dc596d21f1958d fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-10\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-5072553efebb7939a2dc596d21f1958d\"><\/div>\n<p>There was nothing particularly objectionable in what Raffensperger <em>did<\/em> say, pointing out that \u201cleft-wing groups [are] trying to get noncitizens voting in local elections\u201d and asking \u201cif people really, truly believe [alien voting doesn\u2019t happen], then why are we getting sued by the left to stop us from doing citizenship verification?\u201d But in the entire segment, he missed the big picture: that Democrats are opposed to legislation securing American elections from foreign influence. Additionally, his answers failed to address the fact that states are often met with federal roadblocks when they try to keep foreign nationals out of elections, a problem only federal legislation can solve.<\/p>\n<p>Arizona voters <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/04\/10\/what-a-viral-voting-claim-got-wrong-and-why-americans-are-still-right-to-be-concerned\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">approved<\/a> a law in 2004 requiring DPOC to vote. The Supreme Court, however, forced the state in 2013 to accept the lax federal voter registration form. In response, Arizona began allowing voters who could not provide DPOC to register as \u201cfederal-only\u201d voters \u2014 meaning they could vote in federal elections only but not statewide elections. But in 2018 the state was forced to \u201cnot only accept federal-only applications lacking proof of citizenship but also grant a federal-only registration to applicants who used a state form but couldn\u2019t provide proof of citizenship,\u201d as my colleague M.D. Kittle <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/01\/19\/ballots-cast-without-proof-of-citizenship-exploded-after-lawfare-crippled-arizona-election-laws\/\">explained<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>A federal judge recently <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/03\/01\/court-affirms-arizonas-need-to-keep-noncitizens-off-voter-rolls-but-makes-it-harder-to-do-so\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ruled<\/a> Arizona has an interest in keeping noncitizens off its voter rolls and found the DPOC requirements for the state form are legal, though the same judge last year struck down a state law requiring DPOC for voting in presidential elections and casting mail-in ballots.<\/p>\n<p>In the 2020 election, 11,600 people voted using a federal-only ballot, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/azfreenews.com\/2021\/09\/over-11600-no-proof-of-citizenship-required-federal-ballots-cast-in-2020-election\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">AZ Free News<\/a>. President Joe Biden <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/election\/2020\/results\/state\/arizona\/president\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">won<\/a> the state by 10,457 votes.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-52f090969751c1488eb9d345aed7efb3 fdrlst__b89e9-after-post-content\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-52f090969751c1488eb9d345aed7efb3\"><\/div>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\">    \t\t\t\t\t   \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Outside the partisan Democrat-media bubble, Republican efforts to secure voter eligibility are generally non-controversial.
