These celebrations, sponsored by \u200bStudent Diversity Programs,\u2064 aim to provide a \u200bsense of belonging and\u200d inclusivity for\u200b students from diverse backgrounds. \u200cThe event preceded the official spring commencement ceremonies. Additionally, similar ceremonies were held at the university&#8217;s Reno campus.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<p>The University of Nevada, Las Vegas hosted five \u201caffinity\u201d graduation events earlier this month, Campus Reform <a href=\"https:\/\/www.campusreform.org\/article\/university-of-nevada-hosts-multiple-segregated-graduations-\/25519\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a>, including celebrations for Asian and Pacific American, \u201cLatinx,\u201d Native American, African American, and LGBT students.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPlease join us for our Affinity Graduations sponsored by Student Diversity Programs; which include APMIE, Latinx, Lavender, and Native Convocation,\u201d the school <a href=\"https:\/\/involvementcenter.unlv.edu\/event\/10083881\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wrote<\/a>, adding that participating students would \u201cbe provided a stole to wear at commencement as a part of the ceremony.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The university system\u2019s Reno campus offered similar graduation celebrations, Campus Reform reported.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy recognizing and honoring different cultural traditions and themes, the celebrations create spaces where students can feel proud of their heritage and share it with others. These celebrations help foster a sense of belonging and inclusivity for students of diverse backgrounds,\u201d student supervisor Emily Thao-Singh in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unr.edu\/nevada-today\/news\/2024\/affinity-graduate-celebrations\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a campus statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The affinity celebrations were scheduled to take place ahead of the university\u2019s official spring commencement ceremonies.<\/p>\n<p>In April, \u201cDirty Jobs\u201d Host Mike Rowe <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/mike-rowe-slams-harvards-segregation-celebrations\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">blasted<\/a> Harvard University\u2019s use of affinity celebrations, asking, \u201cWhat better way to celebrate Harvard\u2019s rich commitment to diversity, [than] by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/mike-rowe-slams-harvards-segregation-celebrations\/\" title=\"Mike Rowe criticizes Harvard for its 'segregation' events\">encouraging diverse groups<\/a> to celebrate separately?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese [affinity] celebrations allow students to separate themselves from each other based on their racial and ethnic identities, and then, celebrate graduation with their own kind,\u201d Rowe wrote <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/100044228419568\/posts\/pfbid037e5bvraYn8FoWhoUWawHFMkfgQT669HJnDKrhHkK8XxoJaHtCHR22ofu63EmqVaUl\/?mibextid=cr9u03\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">on Facebook<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m old enough to remember when this was called \u2018segregation,\u2019\u201d he added. \u201cAt Harvard, they call it \u2018affinity.\u2019 To be fair, Harvard\u2019s website says these celebrations are not in lieu of the official graduation, and open to all students who pre-register. But the celebrations themselves are clearly labeled, and the invitees are hard to misconstrue.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Other schools have offered similar ceremonies for years. In 2021, The Daily Wire <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/columbia-to-host-six-graduation-ceremonies-divided-by-sex-race-income\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a> that Columbia University would host six separate graduation ceremonies segregated by student race, sex, and income. Days later, Columbia <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/columbia-university-reverses-course-sort-of-on-segregated-graduation-ceremonies-now-calls-them-celebrations\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">clarified<\/a> that the segregated events were not graduation ceremonies, but celebrations.<\/p>\n<p>The College Fix <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/after-backlash-columbia-stealthily-changes-segregated-grad-ceremonies-to-celebrations\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a> at the time that in response to the backlash the university received for the segregated \u201cMulticultural Graduation Ceremonies,\u201d the school\u2019s website <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cc-seas.columbia.edu\/multicultural\/graduateregistration\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">was quietly changed<\/a> to call them \u201cMulticultural Graduation Celebrations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Fix reported in its original article on the ceremonies that they were in addition to the graduation ceremonies for the entire \u201cIvy League university and its individual schools.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn most instances, these smaller, multicultural gatherings evolved from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/columbia-university-reverses-course-sort-of-on-segregated-graduation-ceremonies-now-calls-them-celebrations\/\" title=\"Columbia University Reverses Course, Sort Of, On Segregated Graduation Ceremonies; Now Calls Them \u2018Celebrations\u2019\">ceremonies originally created<\/a> by alumni and students,\u201d a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/new-jersey-high-school-changing-name-over-racist-namesake\/\" title=\"New Jersey High School Changing Name Over \u2018Racist\u2019 Namesake\">school spokesperson told<\/a> the outlet in an email. \u201cThe gatherings are voluntary, open to every student who wants to participate, and have become a highly anticipated and meaningful part of the Columbia graduation experience.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The University of Nevada, Las Vegas organized five &#8220;affinity&#8221; graduation ceremonies for Asian and Pacific American, Latinx, Native American, African American, and LGBT students.
