Cannon said Smith\u2019s request was \u201cwholly lacking in substance and professional courtesy\u201d due to the timing of the request.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSufficient time needs to be afforded to permit reasonable evaluation of the requested relief by opposing counsel and to allow adequate follow-up discussions as necessary,\u201d Cannon wrote in response to Smith\u2019s motion.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause the filing of the Special Counsel\u2019s motion did not adhere to these basic requirements, it is due to be denied without prejudice,\u201d Cannon said. <\/p>\n<p>Cannon\u2019s ruling <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/justice\/3018658\/trump-lawyers-sanctions-jack-smith-unconstitutional-gag-order-request\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>echoes a motion <\/a>Trump\u2019s legal team filed on Monday, requesting Smith be sanctioned for his Friday evening request.\u00a0They said the motion was filed Friday at 5:30 p.m. ahead of the Memorial Day weekend holiday, to which Trump\u2019s team responded within 10 minutes. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe noted the suspicious timing of the communication,\u201d the filing from Trump\u2019s legal team said.
