His strategy, while appealing to\u2062 some, has garnered criticism from others, including Angela Alsobrooks, the Maryland Democratic Senate nominee.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Former <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/maryland\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Maryland<\/a> Gov. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/larry-hogan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Larry Hogan<\/a> has had a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/michael-barone-give-thanks-for-the-northwest-ordinance\/\" title=\"Michael Barone: Give Thanks for the Northwest Ordinance\">successful political career<\/a> as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/republican\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Republican<\/a> in heavily blue Maryland. He\u2019s now tasked with flipping a senate seat in the state to the GOP after serving eight years as governor.<\/p>\n<p>Hogan has escalated his messaging toward the state\u2019s Democrats since winning the May 14 Maryland Republican primary. He launched \u201cDemocrats for Hogan,\u201d an initiative he also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=5Px05LM24OY\">pushed<\/a> before his 2018 reelection.<\/p>\n<p>Hogan\u2019s attempts to curry Democrats\u2019 favor could prove essential in Maryland. Registered Democrats outnumber Republicans over a 2-to-1 margin, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/elections.maryland.gov\/voter_registration\/stats.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>latest<\/a> Maryland voter registration report released in March. <\/p>\n<figure><\/figure>\n<p>While Hogan faces an uphill battle for the more nationally inclined Senate position, <em>Cook Political Report<\/em> lists his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cookpolitical.com\/ratings\/senate-race-ratings\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>race<\/a> as \u201cLikely Democrat,\u201d he\u2019s made many attempts to appeal to the state\u2019s largest voter base. Here are some of them.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Changing abortion stance<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Hogan recently described himself as \u201cpro-choice\u201d after previous hesitation to address abortion in Maryland and saying himself that he\u2019s personally <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/05\/16\/us\/politics\/larry-hogan-abortion-roe-v-wade.html?smid=tw-share\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>against<\/a> abortion along with vetoing a state law two years ago that would\u2019ve expanded abortion access. He\u2019s also promised to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/vulnerable-dem-mum-on-bidens-call-to-abolish-filibuster\/\" title=\"Vulnerable Dem Mum on Biden\u2019s Call To Abolish Filibuster\">enshrine abortion rights<\/a> into the state\u2019s constitution and restore <em>Roe v. Wade<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI support restoring Roe as the law of the land,\u201d Hogan said. \u201cI\u2019ll continue to protect the rights of women to make their own reproductive choices just like I did as governor for eight years. I think Marylanders know and trust that when I give them my word, I\u2019m going to keep it, and I\u2019ve protected these rights before. And I\u2019ll do it again in the Senate by supporting a bipartisan compromise to restore Roe as the law of the land.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Restoring the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/tv-networks-reject-pro-life-groups-ad-asserting-humanity-of-unborn-unacceptable\/\" title=\"TV Networks Reject Pro-Life Group\u2019s Ad Asserting Humanity Of Unborn: \u2018Unacceptable\u2019\">landmark abortion case<\/a> goes against much of what Republican senators would vote for, and implies he\u2019d vote with Democrats on the issue. Still, some Democrats don\u2019t believe Hogan would support abortion rights.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you believe that, I\u2019d be happy to sell you the Key Bridge,\u201d Brian Frosh, the state\u2019s former attorney general, <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/BrianFrosh\/status\/1790831023321715035\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>said<\/a>, referencing the bridge that collapsed into the Patapsco River in March.<\/p>\n<p>Maryland Democratic Senate nominee and Prince George\u2019s County Executive Angela Alsobrooks has attacked Hogan on his abortion stance and insisted that \u201che\u2019s no moderate\u201d in a campaign ad.<\/p>\n<figure>\n<div>\n<blockquote data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<div lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">\n<p>Larry Hogan has already shown us and told us he is not going to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/biden-now-claims-that-life-does-not-begin-at-conception-after-repeatedly-claiming-it-did\/\" title=\"Biden Now Claims That Life Does Not Begin At Conception After Repeatedly Claiming It Did\">protect abortion rights<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>And the Republicans he&#8217;d be joining in the Senate have made their agenda crystal clear. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/Zwef9v9iXC\">pic.twitter.com\/Zwef9v9iXC<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u2014 Angela Alsobrooks (@AlsobrooksForMD) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AlsobrooksForMD\/status\/1791150262511358166?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 16, 2024<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Hogan\u2019s campaign recently launched a counterattack against Alsobrooks\u2019s claims that he is not going to support abortion rights by saying she is \u201centitled to her own opinion but not her own facts\u201d at the beginning of a lengthy counterargument.<\/p>\n<figure><\/figure>\n<h2><strong>Recent refusal to attack Democrats<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>While Democrats have not hesitated to blast Hogan on abortion, caucusing with Republicans, and other issues, the Maryland Republican has done little of the same on social media.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, Hogan didn\u2019t hesitate to <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/GovLarryHogan\/status\/1790565064790937849\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>congratulate<\/a> Alsobrooks on her Democratic primary victory and said, \u201cI know Angela well, and I value our respectful relationship. I look forward to a real debate on what this campaign is about: who can actually help fix the mess in Washington.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hogan declined to unleash any sharp barbs toward Alsobrooks, leaning toward touting his own record instead in the post.<\/p>\n<p>He also congratulated Rep. David Trone (D-MD), Alsobrooks\u2019s unsuccessful primary competitor, in what could be an appeal to the more moderate Trone voters, who have now been left to vote for Alsobrooks or the familiar Hogan. Trone finished second in the primary race, <a href=\"https:\/\/ballotpedia.org\/David_Trone\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>securing<\/a> 42.6% of Democratic votes.<\/p>\n<p>Hogan has already implied that he\u2019s against attacking Democrats.<\/p>\n<figure>\n<div>\n<blockquote data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Politics shouldn\u2019t be total war. We must change politics as usual, and that is why I\u2019m running. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/x1sgIxE9p4\">pic.twitter.com\/x1sgIxE9p4<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Governor Larry Hogan (@GovLarryHogan) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GovLarryHogan\/status\/1790708517667496436?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 15, 2024<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<h2><strong>Adversarial relationship with Donald Trump<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Hogan is well-known for criticizing former President Donald Trump, especially over his COVID-19 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/04\/03\/us\/politics\/maryland-coronavirus.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>response<\/a>, and has neither received an endorsement from the former president, nor given out his own to Trump. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2024\/02\/23\/hogan-trump-maryland-senate-race-2024-election\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Reports<\/a> say both are trying to stay out of each other\u2019s way.<\/p>\n<p>While this may appeal to Maryland voters, who <a href=\"https:\/\/elections.maryland.gov\/elections\/2020\/results\/general\/gen_results_2020_4_001-.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>voted<\/a> for President Joe Biden 65% to Trump\u2019s 32% in 2020, it also runs the risk of Hogan alienating Republicans supporting Trump.<\/p>\n<p>Republicans supportive of Trump likely voted for Robin Ficker, who often <a href=\"https:\/\/voteficker.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>touted<\/a> a MAGA hat to campaign events and endorsed Trump in his presidential bid. Ficker lost to Hogan, but garnered <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2024\/05\/14\/us\/elections\/results-maryland-primary.html#S\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>nearly<\/a> 30% of the Republican vote.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe set out in this race to give Maryland Republicans who are tired of career politicians who sow division in their own party instead of fighting for the heart and soul of this amazing country we are blessed to live in,\u201d Ficker <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/photo\/?fbid=122177375846022420&#038;set=a.122129048678022420\">said<\/a> in a statement following the primary, a likely veiled jab at Hogan included.<\/p>\n<p>Hogan\u2019s messaging against Trump didn\u2019t appear to hurt him in his 2018 reelection bid \u2014 he garnered nearly 4% <a href=\"https:\/\/elections.maryland.gov\/elections\/2018\/results\/general\/gen_results_2018_2_003-.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>more<\/a> of the <a href=\"https:\/\/elections.maryland.gov\/elections\/2014\/results\/General\/gen_results_2014_2_003-.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>vote<\/a> than his first try.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Centrist social media messaging<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Hogan\u2019s messaging often hasn\u2019t attacked Democrats for their party affliation, so much as blasting politicians from both <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/GovLarryHogan\/status\/1791797288630714756\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>parties <\/a>\u201cwho seem to be more interested in attacking each other than in actually getting anything done for the people they represent.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In a social media <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/GovLarryHogan\/status\/1791470734658723911\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>post<\/a>, Hogan said, \u201cEvery day Washington politicians play politics instead of addressing the border crisis, they are failing the American people.\u201d And then seemingly appeals to Democrats by saying it \u201cdoesn\u2019t matter if it\u2019s proposed by Republicans or Democrats. It\u2019s the right thing to do. I would gladly join with Senate Democrats to get this done.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He hinted at his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/biden-allies-ignore-tuesdays-shellacking-urge-democrats-to-enact-reconciliation-package\/\" title=\"Biden Allies Ignore Tuesday's Shellacking, Urge Democrats to Enact Reconciliation Package\u00a0\">centrist position<\/a> with a <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/GovLarryHogan\/status\/1792167703613948233\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>post<\/a> that quoted the <em>Baltimore Sun<\/em>, saying, \u201cHe has lived up to his promise to govern in a way that reflects Maryland \u2018middle temperament\u2019.\u201d Hogan endorsed the message, saying, \u201cFor eight years, we made sure the best ideas rose to the top based upon their merit, regardless of which side of the political debate they come from.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One final hint lies in a post in which Hogan said it\u2019s \u201ctime for independent leadership.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The posts all contribute to the thought that Hogan is closer to what Trump might call a \u201cRINO\u201d or Republican in name only. Hogan could be a swing-vote in the Senate in the mold of Sens. Susan Collins (R-ME) and Lisa Murkowski (R-AK), and occasionally sub Republican-led efforts.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Promoting friendly policies as governor<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Hogan often strayed from mainstream Republican thought in his governance of Maryland \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/dc-md-va\/2023\/01\/23\/larry-hogan-maryland-governor-legacy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>enforcing<\/a> mask mandates, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baltimoresun.com\/2018\/03\/23\/maryland-lawmakers-set-to-do-what-congress-cant-protect-obamacare-with-tax-on-insurers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>taxing<\/a> insurance companies in a de-facto defense of Obamacare, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/local\/md-politics\/facing-pressure-from-jealous-hogan-distances-himself-from-the-nra\/2018\/07\/23\/1504f62a-8e84-11e8-8322-b5482bf5e0f5_story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>distancing<\/a> himself from the GOP-friendly National Rifle Association verbally and in gun-control legislation he endorsed.<\/p>\n<p>In a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marylandmatters.org\/2023\/01\/17\/political-notes-hogan-rides-off-into-the-sunset-with-approval-ratings-intact-talmadge-branch-joins-lobbying-firm\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>poll<\/a> following his exit as governor, 81% of Maryland Democrats approved of Hogan, which was 13 points higher than his approval rating among state Republicans, and clocked in a 77% approval rating overall.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/\"><strong>CLICK HERE TO READ MORE FROM THE WASHINGTON EXAMINER<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Hogan\u2019s approval among Democrats equaled Biden\u2019s, and a pollster told <em>Maryland Matters<\/em> that it was \u201cthe most fascinating finding in this survey.\u201d The former governor\u2019s policies likely contributed to Democrats\u2019 favorable view of him, and he still managed to secure strong support from loyal GOP voters.<\/p>\n<p>Hogan will face Democratic nominee Alsobrooks in the November general election.
