The study emphasized the prevalence of marijuana use among youths with psychotic \u200csymptoms. The research \u2062further supported \u200dthe \u200b<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/greenlighting-over-the-counter-birth-control-the-fda-puts-womens-health-last\/\" title=\"FDA prioritizes profits over women's health by approving over-the-counter birth control.\">negative health implications<\/a> of teen \u2063marijuana use, including anxiety, depression, schizophrenia, and suicidal ideation. Despite arguments suggesting \u200dmental health issues might spur marijuana use, researchers largely dismissed this possibility, urging adolescents to delay their use until their brains are more developed.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>A new study released last week revealed links between teenagers who use <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/marijuana-legalization\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>marijuana<\/a> and an increased risk of dangerous <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/mental-health\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>mental health<\/a> disorders.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers from the University of Toronto found that teenagers who used marijuana in some form in the last year were 11 times more likely to develop a psychotic disorder compared to teenagers who did not use the drug, <em>NBC News<\/em> reported. The study was published in the journal <em>Psychological Medicine<\/em> and released on Wednesday. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I see youths with psychotic symptoms, they\u2019re almost always using lots of cannabis,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/health\/health-news\/teens-marijuana-use-mental-disorders-research-rcna153344\">said Dr. Leslie Hulvershorn, chair of the psychiatry department at Indiana University and child psychiatrist<\/a>. \u201cIt would be unusual to see someone present with psychotic symptoms to a hospital and not have smoked cannabis.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It is the latest research to highlight the harmful health issues associated with marijuana use as a teenager. Among the problems <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/health\/mental-health\/marijuana-use-mental-health-young-adults-weed-rcna84984\">linked to teenage marijuana<\/a> were anxiety, depression, schizophrenia, and suicidal ideation. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think that there\u2019s enough evidence out there for us to give recommendations that teens probably shouldn\u2019t be using cannabis,\u201d said Andre McDonald, the study\u2019s lead author. \u201cIf we can somehow ask teens to delay their use until their brain has developed a little further, I think that would be good for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/biden-calls-travel-lid-for-wednesday-an-hour-after-bobulinski-interview-airs\/\" title=\"Biden Calls Travel Lid for Wednesday an Hour After Bobulinski Interview Airs\">public health<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, multiple studies in recent years have identified this link between marijuana use and harmful mental health conditions. While some have implied that such disorders could facilitate the need and desire to use marijuana instead of marijuana being an impetus for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/the-irreversible-consequences-of-school-closures\/\" title=\"The Irreversible Consequences of School Closures\">mental health concerns<\/a>, Hulvershorn dismissed that possibility, given the significance of the association of the current study\u2019s findings.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe magnitude of the effect here is just hard to believe that it\u2019s not related to cannabis,\u201d Hulvershorn said. <\/p>\n<p>The research also found the connection between psychosis and marijuana use applied only to teenagers, <em>NBC News<\/em> reported. Individuals between the ages of 20 and 33 who used marijuana were found not to have any connection to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/gavin-newsom-unveils-plan-to-address-mental-health-in-homeless-population-meet-people-where-they-are\/\" title=\"Gavin Newsom Unveils Plan to Address Mental Health in Homeless Population: \u2018Meet People Where They Are\u2019\">psychotic disorders<\/a>. This discovery appears to align with the revelations of previous research. <\/p>\n<p>In an earlier study that Hulvershorn co-authored, researchers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC10635559\/\">identified a link<\/a> between \u201ccannabis use in teenage years and negative mental health outcomes such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/how-to-show-lockdowns-are-killing-more-people-than-the-virus\/\" title=\"How To Show Lockdowns Are Killing More People Than The Virus\">mental illness<\/a>, depression, anxiety, and addiction. Addiction to cannabis is called cannabis use disorder (CUD). CUD is on the rise, and risks for developing CUD peak during the teenage years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This study also revealed that marijuana use as a teenager comes with \u201can increased risk of addiction in general.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Other doctors echoed the sentiments behind such findings.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>CLICK HERE TO READ MORE FROM THE WASHINGTON EXAMINER<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s something about that stage of brain development that we haven\u2019t yet fully characterized \u2014 where there\u2019s a window of time where cannabis use may increase the risk of psychosis,\u201d said Dr. Kevin Gray, a professor of psychiatry and director of addiction sciences at the Medical University of South Carolina. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis study really puts a fine point on delaying cannabis use until your 20s may mitigate one of the most potentially serious risks,\u201d said Gray, who was not affiliated with the latest research.<\/p>\n<p>Among teenagers who were part of the study and hospitalized for psychotic disorders, approximately 83% reported previously using marijuana.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe see this replicated over and over again that there\u2019s this developmental window of adolescence that\u2019s very high-risk,\u201d Gray said.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Last week&#8217;s study from the University of Toronto illustrated a connection between teen marijuana use and a higher likelihood of serious mental health disorders.
