This marked Leclerc&#8217;s \u2063third pole position \u200bwithin a four-year span. An emotional moment for him, his victory came to fruition, watching the race as \u2063a child from his\u200d apartment overlooking the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/nascar-aj-allmendinger-wins-xfinity-series-race-at-indianapolis-motor-speedway\/\" title=\"NASCAR: AJ Allmendinger Wins Xfinity Series Race At Indianapolis Motor Speedway\">start-finish line<\/a>. Despite challenges \u200cin the final laps,\u200c Leclerc retained his lead, thinking of\u2064 his late father who dreamt of his son&#8217;s racing success. The race also included a significant\u200d first-lap \u2062crash involving Max Verstappen, \u200dSergio Perez, Kevin Magnussen,\u200d and Nico Hulkenberg,\u200c resulting in a 40-minute interruption. Leclerc clinched his \u200cwin 8 \u200cseconds ahead\u2062 of McLaren\u2019s\u200d Oscar Piastri, with Ferrari \u2064teammate Carlos Sainz Jr.\u2063 taking third place.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<header> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/news\/\">  News <\/a>    <span> <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/author\/ap-reports\/\">  <\/a> <\/p>\n<p> <span>   By <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/author\/ap-reports\/%20\"><span>The Associated Press<\/span><\/a> <\/span> <span>   May 26, 2024 at 6:44am <\/span> <\/span>  <\/header>\n<section>\n<p>MONACO (AP) \u2014 Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc won the restarted Monaco Grand Prix from pole position on Sunday for his first Formula 1 victory in nearly two years.<\/p>\n<p>Leclerc <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/monaco-f1-pole-leclerc-verstappen-797867428d195a8c57631ea779e3bd2a\">was on pole<\/a> for the third time in four years, but had previously never finished on the podium at <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/formula-one-leclerc-fans-privacy-monaco-636b7209c266de8434b4d39e76601828\">his home race.<\/a> His first win since Austria in July 2022 took his career tally to six, all with Ferrari.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTonight\u2019s going to be a big night,\u201d he told his team over the radio.<\/p>\n<p>A Monaco victory felt extra special for him, having grown up in a flat overlooking the start-finish line watching cars zooming past below.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo words can explain that. It was the race that made me want to be a Formula 1 driver one day,\u201d the 26-year-old Leclerc said. \u201cSeeing so many of my friends on the balcony, so many people I know. It means a huge amount to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The last 15 laps were the most difficult as the realisation of how much winning would mean dawned on him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI must say I was thinking about my dad,\u201d Leclerc said of <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/leclerc-carries-memories-of-his-father-bianchi-at-monaco-a8fd8a27bae64aeb9ce9007f9d550a3d\">his late father<\/a>. \u201cIt was a dream of ours for me to race here and win, so it\u2019s unbelievable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Championship leader Max Verstappen <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/monaco-f1-red-bull-verstappen-perez-8c56384e0f99f3d606cd3b226476e0e4\">started and finished sixth<\/a> for Red Bull, whose other driver Sergio Perez went out of the race after a big first-lap crash.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/monaco-f1-crash-red-bull-haas-6aaba30ce8339978ad4ebc69887ee70a\">The crash<\/a> also took out Haas drivers Kevin Magnussen and Nico Hulkenberg, and caused it to be interrupted by a red flag for 40 minutes. The drivers were not hurt.<\/p>\n<p>The race restarted on Lap 3 of 78 and the drivers pulled away cleanly but slowly, with Leclerc managing his tires on a track notoriously difficult for overtaking.<\/p>\n<p>Leclerc finished about 8 seconds ahead of McLaren\u2019s Oscar Piastri and 9 seconds clear of Ferrari teammate Carlos Sainz Jr. in third. <\/p>\n<p>McLaren\u2019s Lando Norris was fourth and Mercedes driver George Russell held off Verstappen to take fifth place.<\/p>\n<p>Seven-time F1 champion Lewis Hamilton was seventh, with Yuki Tsunoda (Racing Bulls), Alex Albon (Williams) and Pierre Gasly (Alpine) completing the top 10. It was the same order as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.formula1.com\/en\/results.html\/2024\/races\/1236\/monaco\/starting-grid.html\">starting grid<\/a>, reflecting Monaco\u2019s reputation as the <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/monaco-overtaking-horner-hamilton-sainz-6f3cf5344da884bc95d0f25539817ad3\">hardest track to overtake<\/a> in F1.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe pace at the beginning was incredibly slow,\u201d Piastri said. \u201cBut it\u2019s been a great weekend for the team.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>All of the drama came at the start.<\/p>\n<p>Perez\u2019s right rear wheel was clipped by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/officials-13-year-old-behind-of-wheel-of-truck-in-texas-wreck-that-killed-9\/\" title=\"Officials: 13-Year-Old Behind of Wheel of Truck in Texas Wreck That Killed 9\">front left tire<\/a> of Magnussen behind him and put Perez into the crash barrier. Perez\u2019s car almost split in half and also sent Hulkenberg\u2019s Haas spinning as he followed behind.<\/p>\n<p>A red flag came out with debris littering the track to allow Perez\u2019s mangled Red Bull to be cleared away by a crane. The Mexican driver walked back accompanied by two race marshals. His team said he did not need medical checks.<\/p>\n<p>Then, two Alpines tangled near the tunnel with Esteban Ocon\u2019s front nose sending teammate Pierre Gasly\u2019s car up in the air. With other cars just behind and the tunnel approaching, a serious accident was avoided. Ocon will serve a five<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/when-formula-one-flamed-out-in-vegas-fans-got-badly-burned\/\" title=\"When Formula One Flamed Out In Vegas, Fans Got Badly Burned\">-place grid penalty<\/a> at the next race, the Canada GP on June 9.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday\u2019s incident was my fault,\u201c Ocon said. \u201cThe gap was too small in the end.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Governing body FIA ordered a standing restart with Leclerc in pole ahead of Piastri and Sainz going from third, despite puncturing moments after the start. He was trying to pass Piastri and had to use a run-off area at Casino Square.<\/p>\n<p>French soccer star Kylian Mbapp\u00e9 and FIFA president Gianni Infantino were among the guests enjoying the bright sunshine.<\/p>\n<p>But the race proved a processional affair.<\/p>\n<p>Following the restart, cars trundled around the 3.3-kilometer (2-mile) narrow street circuit as Leclerc seemed determined to make his tires last until the end. <\/p>\n<p>Piastri sat on his tail, and by the halfway point he was around 1 second behind, but Leclerc picked up the pace.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo be honest Charles has been mega all weekend,\u201d Piastri said. \u201cIt probably would have taken the best lap of my life (in qualifying).
