She brushed off any questions regarding the flag, which at the time was not flying upside down, claiming, \u201cIt\u2019s an international signal of distress.\u201d Her husband recently explained that it was born out of a confrontation with their neighbor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAsk them what they did,\u201d she told the reporter, in reference to the neighbor.<\/p>\n<p>The Alitos\u2019 neighbors had put out yard signs with crude language in their cul-de-sac, near where a bus drops off school-aged children. Alito hung the flag the way she did in response to the signs, which allegedly devolved into personal attacks against Alito herself.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI had no involvement whatsoever in the flying of the flag,\u201d Samuel Alito\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/05\/16\/us\/justice-alito-upside-down-flag.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a> in response to the news coverage on the matter. \u201cIt was briefly placed by Mrs. Alito in response to a neighbor\u2019s use of objectionable and personally insulting language on yard signs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The upside-down flag began as an SOS signal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/supreme-court\/3014511\/flags-alito-is-under-fire-for\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"per maritime tradition\">per maritime tradition<\/a>. Alito is the daughter of an Air Force veteran and was born on the Fort Knox military base in Kentucky. Following the riots of Jan. 6, 2021, Trump supporters began flying the flag upside down, which led many to associate the symbol with the \u201cStop the Steal\u201d movement.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>CLICK HERE TO READ MORE FROM THE WASHINGTON EXAMINER<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Alitos did not attend Biden\u2019s inauguration.
