Penalties are enforced, and evictions expedited, showing a proactive stance in tackling \u2064the issue.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<header> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/commentary\/\">  Commentary <\/a>   <span> <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/author\/igcolonel\/\">  <\/a> <\/p>\n<p> <span>   By <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/author\/igcolonel\/%20\"><span>Warner Todd Huston<\/span><\/a> <\/span> <span>   May 24, 2024 at 4:28pm <\/span> <\/span>  <\/header>\n<section>\n<p>Squatting has become a major problem across the country as lawbreakers have come to realize that, somehow, the law is often on their side, but one state is standing up and working to put an end to the infuriating practice.<\/p>\n<p>Squatters have been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/expert-squatters-warns-nation-nightmare-illegal-immigrants-discover-housing-law-loopholes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">violating the rights<\/a> of property owners everywhere and some egregiously so, but the state of Georgia is moving to further criminalize the act with its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.billtrack50.com\/billdetail\/1686917\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Georgia Squatter Reform Act<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Republican Gov. Brian Kemp signed the bill into law on Wednesday to make it illegal to live on another person\u2019s property without approval.<\/p>\n<p>Kemp told Fox News that it has always been \u201coutrageous\u201d that someone could just move in and take over someone else\u2019s property.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is insanity that people just think they can come in and take over somebody\u2019s home. I mean, it\u2019s just outrageous,\u201d Kemp told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/media\/gov-brian-kemp-signing-bill-make-squatting-crime-georgia-insanity\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fox News<\/a> on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>Kemp is 100 percent right.<\/p>\n<p>It is outrageous that in a country that is built on personal property rights as a bedrock principle, criminals can simply move in and steal people\u2019s property, and slow-moving courts \u2014 and often liberal politicians \u2014 are helping them do it.<\/p>\n<p>According to the new law, squatters will face arrest and fines based on the monthly rent they would have paid if they were living on the property legally, <a href=\"https:\/\/mynbc15.com\/news\/nation-world\/georgia-governor-to-sign-bill-criminalizing-squatting-insane-that-it-even-happens-brian-kemp-squatters-landowners-homeowners-home-devan-seabaugh-ron-desantis-florida\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The National Desk<\/a> reported.<\/p>\n<p>Landowners also have the option to sue the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/couple-purchases-2-million-dream-house-find-unwelcome-guest-already-living-inside-total-nightmare\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">squatters<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"firefly-poll-container\">\n<p>Should more states take the fight to squatters?<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cUnfortunately, bad actors have figured out ways to take advantage of this \u2013 exploit, really \u2013 the process that goes through the local government,\u201d Kemp explained. \u201cWe\u2019re passing legislation \u2026 to stiffen the penalties, to go after these folks, to also speed up the eviction process, but also allow the property owner to go after these squatters for damages.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Republican State Rep. Devan Seabaugh, who introduced the legislation, celebrated the new law.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis legislation is long overdue, and I know it is going to expedite the process for Georgia property owners having to deal with criminals squatting in their homes. If you break into someone\u2019s home and think you are going to reside there, you are mistaken,\u201d Rep. Seabaugh said. \u201cThere are no more free homes in Georgia.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kemp also took a shot at Joe Biden and the democrat Party\u2019s soft on crime policies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt really points to, as we\u2019ve seen around the country, the lawlessness that\u2019s gone on under the Biden administration and, quite honestly, a lot of liberal cities around the country where locally appointed judiciary is not acting on these things,\u201d the gov. said.<\/p>\n<p>Some local jurisdictions in the Peach State are moving quickly to implement the new law.<\/p>\n<p>The Atlanta suburb of South Fulton has already set up a task force to begin going after squatters, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/news\/police-now-enforcing-georgia-news-160503540.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">WSB-TV<\/a> reported.<\/p>\n<p>You can watch the network\u2019s coverage on the issue below:<\/p>\n<p> <iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"This is how police are now enforcing Georgia\u2019s news squatter laws following Channel 2 investigations\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/M7jA1fN7lPg?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>According to the network, body camera footage from a May 4 bust of squatters in South Fulton, Georgia, revealed that squatters literally ran out the back door when police came knocking with these new powers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re basically putting these squatters on notice. The law changed,\u201d South Fulton Lt. Jubal Rogers said.<\/p>\n<p>Rogers told WSB that that the new law is helping them act much faster in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/squatter-granted-ownership-old-mans-house-sells-half-million-elder-lives-paltry-pension\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">squatter cases<\/a>, saying, \u201cAbsolutely. I think with the current law that is now in effect, we will be able to react more proactively.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Under the new law, suspected squatters will be issued a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/dem-governor-gets-backlash-report-shows-whopping-70-criminals-released-covid-reoffended\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">criminal<\/a> citation on the spot and will then have three days to present a proper lease. But if the lease is fraudulent the case is immediately elevated from a misdemeanor to a felony.<\/p>\n<p>The new law also states that in addition to a property owner, others are also allowed to report possible squatters, including neighbors and HOAs.<\/p>\n<p>Georgia is not the only state moving to put an end to this outrageous illegality.
