On May 20, tugboats were finally able to escort the 106,000-ton vessel back to the Seagirt Marine Terminal in the Port of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/baltimore\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Baltimore<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The ship\u2019s removal will now allow \u201call pre-collapse deep-draft commercial vessels to enter and exit the Port of Baltimore,\u201d according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.keybridgeresponse2024.com\/post\/update-30-key-bridge-response-unified-command-moves-dali-restores-use-of-federal-channel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>news release<\/a> from the Unified Command, a joint task force composed of multiple government agencies responding to the disaster.<\/p>\n<figure><figcaption>(Graeme Jennings \/ Washington Examiner) <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The collision not only choked the supply chain pathway to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/at-home-covid-test-deliveries-delayed-after-wild-west-style-train-robberies\/\" title=\"At-Home Covid Test Deliveries Delayed After \u2018Wild West-Style Train Robberies\u2019\">busy port<\/a> but also the livelihoods of thousands of longshoremen. Dockworkers were left idle for weeks, suffering a wage loss of about $2 million a day.\u00a0Manufacturers and shippers were left scrambling to\u00a0figure out\u00a0where they could load or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/the-next-supply-side-agenda\/\" title=\"The Next Supply Side Agenda\">unload cargo<\/a>. The 30,000 vehicles that drove over the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/brexit-trade-deal-published-as-uk-calls-for-end-to-ugly-divisions\/\" title=\"Brexit trade deal published as UK calls for end to \u2018ugly\u2019 divisions\">bridge<\/a> every day had to find alternate routes, and the cost to the Baltimore economy could be as much as <a href=\"https:\/\/trone.house.gov\/2024\/04\/05\/appropriator-rep-david-trone-releases-statement-on-potus-visit-to-baltimore\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>$15 million a day<\/a>, according to Rep. David Trone (D-MD).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have refloated and moved the <em>Dali<\/em> \u2014 achieving in weeks what many thought would take months,\u201d Gov. Wes Moore (D-MD) said on May 20 on X. \u201cBut our work isn\u2019t done. We must continue to clear the full 700-foot federal channel, support the workers, businesses, and families affected by the collapse, and rebuild the Key Bridge.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure><figcaption>(Graeme Jennings \/ Washington Examiner)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Enter ATON, or aids to navigation, installed and maintained by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/coast-guard\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>U.S. Coast Guard<\/a>. The <em>Washington Examiner<\/em>\u2018s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/author\/graeme-jennings\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Graeme Jennings<\/a> was onboard the <em>USCGC William Tate<\/em> from April 30 to May 3, observing the keeper-class coastal buoy tender maintain pathways and shipping channels open around the <em>Dali<\/em> collapse site and up the East Coast. It\u2019s \u201ca life-saving service,\u201d Carmen Caver, Coast Guard Petty Officer 3rd Class and public affairs specialist, told the <em>Washington Examiner<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThough our ATON units are often out of the spotlight, it is an incredibly important aspect of the Coast Guard. We have the equipment and assets to manage the operations, and though we don\u2019t\u00a0often directly correlate it, ATON saves lives,\u201d she said. \u201cAids to navigation [which includes buoys, day beacons, lights, ranges, and lighthouses] are crucial everywhere in the world. We have very busy channels up here in the Northeast, especially \u2014 I mean, New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore, and D.C. are all in the same area!\u201d<\/p>\n<figure><figcaption>(Graeme Jennings \/ Washington Examiner) <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>To maintain safety zones at sea, \u201cthe Coast Guard does everything from putting buoys out to ensuring everyone follows the rules and regulations for the best possible outcome. This is often replicated in places across the United States, not just for this particular response. We inspect and monitor ATON and even the ships themselves, and we pride ourselves in being as transparent as possible,\u201d Caver added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEven with something seemingly small like this buoy lift operation, members of the community\u00a0reach out and rely on us to get them back to where the buoys need to be.
