John Fetterman\u2062 (D-PA) successfully advocated for the\u200d release of\u2063 a Pennsylvania detainee in Turks and\u2062 Caicos \u2063who unintentionally carried ammunition. Bryan Hagerich, \u2064detained for three months, had the ammunition in his luggage by\u200c mistake. Fetterman&#8217;s visit led\u200d to Hagerich receiving a 52-week suspended sentence for the offense, amidst strict laws in \u2064the country prohibiting unlicensed \u200cfirearms and\u200c ammunition.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div data-td-block-uid=\"tdi_78\">\n<p>Sen. <a href=\"http:\/\/washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/john-fetterman\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>John Fetterman<\/a> (D-PA) celebrated that one <a href=\"http:\/\/washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/pennsylvania\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Pennsylvania<\/a> detainee has been released by authorities in the Turks and Caicos Islands after accidentally traveling with <a href=\"http:\/\/washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/gun-control\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>ammunition<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Bryan Hagerich, 39, has spent three months detained in the island territory since officials discovered ammunition in his luggage that he had accidentally packed. It is <a href=\"https:\/\/bs.usembassy.gov\/travel-alert-do-not-bring-firearms-ammunition-to-the-turks-and-caicos-islands\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"against the law\">against the law<\/a> for anyone in the country to own, discharge, or carry unlicensed ammunition or firearms. An amendment that went into effect in 2022 made the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/new-washington-blm-alliance-begins-lobbying-state-legislature-demands-gov-inslee-declare-racism-a-public-health-crisis\/\" title=\"New \u2018Washington BLM Alliance\u2019 Begins Lobbying State Legislature, Demands Gov. Inslee Declare Racism A Public Health Crisis\">minimum sentence<\/a> for violating this law 12 years in prison.<\/p>\n<p>Fetterman visited the island last weekend to meet with officials over his release, along with the release of four other Americans detained for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/crime\/2980732\/oklahoma-man-faces-12-years-prison-accidentally-bringing-ammunition-turks-caicos\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"similar charges\">similar charges<\/a>. A judge subsequently granted Hagerich a 52-week suspended sentence for the charge.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen we met with TCI officials a few days ago, they made clear that they wanted this situation resolved,\u201d Fetterman said. \u201cThey recognized that Bryan and the other detained Americans are not gunrunners \u2013 they are just people who made a mistake. Evans and Wenwich have pleaded guilty to the charges against them, which resulted in officials allowing Evans to return to the U.S. to receive medical treatment, but he is expected to return to the island.
