Uzor said she looked at pictures of the princess before painting the portrait, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/05\/23\/style\/catherine-princess-wales-tatler-scli-intl\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CNN<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen you can\u2019t meet the sitter in person, you have to look at everything you can find and piece together the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/shockingly-bad-critics-slam-new-kate-middleton-portrait\/\" title=\"Critics harshly criticize new Kate Middleton portrait as \"Shockingly Bad.\">subtle human moments revealed<\/a> in different photographs: do they have a particular way of standing or holding their head or hands? Do they have a recurrent gesture?\u201d she said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>Uzor also said Kate\u2019s recent revelation that she has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/princess-kate-announces-cancer-diagnosis-a-huge-shock\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cancer<\/a> was a factor in the portrait.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll my portraits are made up of layers of a personality, constructed from everything I can find about them,\u201d Uzor said.<\/p>\n<p>The reaction has been highly negative.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat on earth is this??! The Princess of Wales? You could have fooled me. (It\u2019s no surprise to learn that Uzor based her picture on video footage of, rather than personal sittings with, her subject. And be aware, this is not an official commission.) Beneath a Lego-like helmet of unmodulated, monotonously brown \u2018hair\u201d\u2019, this Princess of Wales has as much charisma as a naff figurine atop a wedding cake,\u201d Sooke wrote.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe holds herself with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/evidence-lifetime-cosmic-event-turns-work-two-bored-friends\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">bored<\/a> bearing of an air stewardess about to begin an in-flight safety demonstration.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">That portrait on the cover is horrid! Her tiara doesn\u2019t sparkle and those diamond-drop earrings fail to shine; towards the image\u2019s bottom edge, her gown seems to disintegrate into streaks of brittle wax,\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n<p>Uzor, Sooke wrote, \u201chas somehow transformed one of the most alluring women in the world into a cipher, an automaton, an icon of anti-glamour. She says that her portrait is meant to convey strength and dignity, but the figure she\u2019s painted has a feeble, blow-away presence, drained of charm.
