Stewart&#8217;s views evolved when supporting Dave Chappelle, highlighting the complexities and controversies\u200b surrounding cancellation in the entertainment industry.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/topic\/jon-stewart\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jon Stewart<\/a> fashions himself a court jester, but often he\u2019s just a fool.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Consider his bewildering take on cancel culture, which the press often cites with either scare quotes or prefaced by \u201cso-called.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">There\u2019s nothing imaginary about it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Tell that to Stewart, who in 2021 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedailybeast.com\/jon-stewart-believes-cancel-culture-is-a-myth\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">claimed it was just a myth, a mirage<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. Nothing to see here, folks. Move along.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">People that talk about cancel culture never seem to shut the f*** up about it\u2026Like, there\u2019s more speech now than ever before. It\u2019s not \u2018you can\u2019t say it,\u2019 it\u2019s that when you say it\u2014look, the internet has democratized criticism. What do we do for a living\u2014we talk s***, we criticize, we postulate, we opine, we make jokes, and now other people are having their say. And that\u2019s not cancel culture, that\u2019s relentlessness. We live in a relentless culture. And the system of the internet and all those other things are incentivized to find the pressure points of that and exacerbate it.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Roseanne Barr would like a word. She might be the most infamous cancel culture victim, her career and signature show erased for one <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/actress-fantasizes-about-little-white-daughters-being-raped-by-black-men-in-now-removed-tweet-barrage\/\" title=\"Actress Fantasizes About \u2018Little White Daughters\u2019 Being \u2018Raped\u2019 By \u2018Black Men\u2019 In Now-Removed Tweet Barrage\">racially charged tweet<\/a> for which she immediately apologized.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Or four rebel comics canceled by a Seattle comedy club for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/mynorthwest.com\/3952217\/rantz-seattle-comedy-club-canceled-comics-over-offended-activists\/#:~:text=Rantz%3A%20Seattle%20comedy%20club%20canceled%20comics%20over%20offended%20activists&#038;text=A%20Seattle%20comedy%20club%20canceled,community%20activists%20and%20progressive%20comics.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">telling the \u201cwrong\u201d jokes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Or a white male comedian <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/no-joke-white-comic-terror-on-the-prairie-actor-sues-talent-agency-alleging-discrimination\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">allegedly canceled by his management<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">  for being a white male comedian.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Or a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/this-is-the-big-one-steven-crowder-sues-youtube-for-banning-views-of-half-the-country\/\" title=\"\u2018This Is The Big One\u2019: Steven Crowder Sues YouTube For Banning Views Of \u2018Half The Country\u2019\">conservative comedian<\/a> allegedly <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodintoto.com\/steve-mcgrew-brad-garrett-trump-fired\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">canceled by a comedy club<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">  for being a conservative comedian.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Or the jokes never told because <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodintoto.com\/desus-mero-self-censor-cancel-culture\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">comedians censor themselves<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">  to avoid cancellation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Or sitcoms memory holed for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2020\/06\/23\/entertainment\/30-rock-episodes-blackface-trnd\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">blackface-themed gags<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. Or a beloved episode of \u201cFawlty Towers\u201d <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/entertainment-arts-53032895\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">temporarily shelved by the BBC<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">  for racist language. The bit in question mocked racism, but never mind.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Both shows and humans get canceled by the mob, and Stewart pretended it didn\u2019t exist.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">His talking points had a short shelf life.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Later that same year, Stewart defended fellow comedian Dave Chappelle after cancel culture came for him. Chappelle\u2019s Netflix special \u201cThe Closer\u201d featured jokes targeting the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/dave-chappelle-on-meeting-trans-activists-they-wanted-to-incite-violence-against-themselves-for-publicity\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">trans community<\/a>, along with a longer bit that paid homage to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/chappelle-joins-rock-hart-to-tell-cancel-culture-to-pound-sand\/\" title=\"Chappelle Joins Rock, Hart To Tell Cancel Culture To Pound Sand\">late trans comic<\/a>. His white-hot career and legacy seemed on the verge of collapse.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The media savaged his shtick. Netflix employees picketed their own company. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Stewart <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tmz.com\/2021\/10\/21\/jon-stewart-dave-chappelle-never-hurtful-need-better-communication-netflix-trans\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">rushed to his pal\u2019s defense<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u2026. he\u2019s one of my favorite people on the planet and he\u2019s just a good, decent\u2026 \u2013 you know, if there is any miscommunication, I\u2019m sure that \u2013 I love that dude, like as a person.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div id=\"attachment_741419\" style=\"width: 875px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\">\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-741419\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Kevin Mazur\/Getty Images for Pilot Boy<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Stewart thought added context could save Chappelle. He forgot the Barr example.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">She has said she went out of her way to hire minority writers on \u201cRoseanne\u201d to improve the show\u2019s diversity. Former \u201cRoseanne\u201d scribe Norm Macdonald backed up that claim. That context couldn\u2019t save her career from cancel culture.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Chappelle\u2019s special could have been canceled by Netflix. Few would have been surprised by that turn of events and imagine the chilling impact it might have had on his fellow comedians.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Gosh, if the comedy GOAT like Chappelle can be canceled, what about his peers?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Shockingly, Netflix stood tall and defended the comedian.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Cancel culture was real then. It\u2019s real now. Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker can tell us all about it, from the Change.org petition <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.change.org\/p\/demand-the-kansas-city-chiefs-to-dismiss-harrison-butker-for-discriminatory-remarks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">demanding the team fire him<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">  for his pro-Catholic views to sports scribes <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sports.yahoo.com\/kc-chiefs-fire-harrison-butker-154028688.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">echoing those demands.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Stewart picked an odd time to re-engage with the cancel culture conversation. He did it, of course, to smite Donald Trump and the Right.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_741547\" style=\"width: 708px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\">\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-741547\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Screenshot: The Daily Show\/YouTube.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The former and current \u201cDaily Show\u201d host once dabbled in bipartisan yuks. Now, those moments are increasingly rare. He\u2019s more akin to the Colbert School of Comedy. Propaganda, not satire.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Case in point: <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/news\/general-news\/jon-stewart-daily-show-trump-cancel-culture-1235905423\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">He brought up Butker\u2019s imbroglio<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">  to once again claim cancel culture is about accountability, not punishment. Why a Catholic must be held accountable for sharing Catholic beliefs at a Catholic college wasn\u2019t cited in his rant.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">He once again summoned his favorite strawman, that we\u2019re \u201csurrounded by and inundated with more speech than has ever existed in the history of communication\u201d to deny cancel culture\u2019s existence. Yes, but that doesn\u2019t negate the chilling effects cancel culture has on both comedy and the culture at large.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">He doubled down, saying cancel culture doesn\u2019t exist. It\u2019s just a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/culture\/article\/2024\/may\/21\/jon-stewart-trump-cancel-culture\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">cudgel wielded by the Right.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Because the idea that there is an all-pervasive, all-powerful threat to free speech called \u2018cancel culture\u2019 has become a central tenet of modern conservatism. They celebrate their being silenced at conferences. They celebrate their being silenced on podcasts and streaming outlets. They celebrate their being silenced with over 700 book titles about \u2018being canceled\u2019. Why are there so many of these f***ing books?<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Stewart pivoted to Orange Man Bad to placate the show\u2019s clapping seals. Turns out the real cancel culture is happening on the Right, and it\u2019s all Trump\u2019s fault.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Anyone who dares speak out against him, or refuses to buy into Trump\u2019s stolen election claims, you\u2019ll lose your job like Liz Cheney or countless others\u2026In fact, everything the right says cancel culture does to them is actually being done by MAGA.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Countless others? How are political realities the same as cancel culture? Wasn\u2019t Cheney\u2019s plight the most extreme example of a politician betraying her own party over and again and being voted out of office?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It\u2019s deflection. It\u2019s insincere. And it ignores the obvious truth. Cancel culture is a product of the Left.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Why would Stewart deny it? Because he\u2019s felt the Left\u2019s wrath more than once, and he knows he better steer clear of it if he still wants to keep peddling jokes on fancy TV shows.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In 2021 Stewart enraged the Left by saying, on \u201cThe Late Show\u201d no less, that COVID likely came from the lab where the virus originated. He was shocked by the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/news\/how-dare-i-jon-stewart-reflects-on-lab-leak-theory-blowback\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">fallout from that comic rant.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">My bigger problem with that was I thought it was a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/covid-dissenters-are-looking-pretty-good-bill-maher-says\/\" title=\"COVID \u2018Dissenters Are Looking Pretty Good,\u2019 Bill Maher Says\">pretty good bit<\/a> that expressed kind of how I felt, and the two things that came out of it were I\u2019m racist against Asian people, and how dare I align myself with the alt-right.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Sounds not-so-MAGA like.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">More recently, he returned to \u201cThe Daily Show\u201d and admitted that President Joe Biden is old, frail, and far from a strong candidate for re-election. The backlash from the Left was ferocious.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">He\u2019s been Colbert-like on the show ever since.
