Although mandated\u2063 by law, the move is viewed as\u200c a tactical response to economic difficulties linked to \u2064Biden&#8217;s policies.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<header> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/commentary\/\">  Commentary <\/a>   <span> <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/author\/igcolonel\/\">  <\/a> <\/p>\n<p> <span>   By <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/author\/igcolonel\/%20\"><span>Warner Todd Huston<\/span><\/a> <\/span> <span>   May 23, 2024 at 2:57pm <\/span> <\/span>  <\/header>\n<section>\n<p>President Joe Biden is being accused of politicizing the latest sale of gasoline from our national reserves as we enter into the 2024 election cycle amid his long record of presiding over some of the worst gas prices in history.<\/p>\n<p>The Biden administration is preparing to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/biden-makes-massive-move-may-help-chances-trump-aims-lowering-gas-prices-big-decision\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sell off<\/a> one million barrels of gasoline from the U.S.-managed stockpile in northeastern states, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/energy\/us-close-northeast-gasoline-reserve-with-1-million-barrel-sale-2024-05-21\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Reuters<\/a> reported Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>The Dept. of Energy <a href=\"https:\/\/content.govdelivery.com\/accounts\/USDOECESER\/bulletins\/39ddb5b\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">announced<\/a> the sale on Tuesday and noted that the Office of Petroleum Reserves will begin taking bids for the gasoline for delivery no later than June 30. While the sale is mandated by law, the move will effectively close down the reserve which was created in 2014.<\/p>\n<p>The sale is mandated for some time during this year with the proceeds to be deposited into the U.S. Treasury, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spglobal.com\/commodityinsights\/en\/market-insights\/latest-news\/oil\/052124-doe-to-sell-1-million-barrels-of-gasoline-as-it-prepares-to-close-northeast-reserve\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">S&#038;P Global<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The sale was mandated by law because refined <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/gas-prices-become-huge-headache-biden-experts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">gasoline<\/a> has a shorter storage life than unrefined oil.<\/p>\n<p>The administration, though, claims that there is a benefit to the sale of the reserve and that it will help lower the soaring price of gas as the summer months arrive. And America needs some relief, after all. Thanks to Joe Biden\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/bidenomics-inflation-killing-american-dream-100k-no-longer-enough-survive-states\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">disastrous policies<\/a>, Bidenflaton is killing the American dream and throwing millions of Americans out of the middle class.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy strategically releasing this reserve in between Memorial Day and July 4th, we are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/memorial-day-plans-will-cost-americans-more-this-year\/\" title=\"Memorial Day Plans Will Cost Americans More This Year\">ensuring sufficient supply flows<\/a> to the \u2026 northeast at a time hardworking Americans need it the most,\u201d said Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm.<\/p>\n<p>However, the price per gallon is still higher than it was this time last year. According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/advisor\/personal-finance\/gas-prices-by-state\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Forbes<\/a>, the average price of gas is currently $3.62 per gallon. But this time last year, gas was selling on average for $3.54 per gallon.<\/p>\n<p>Biden\u2019s critics, though, say that the sale is only taking place now because Biden is hoping to use any beneficial effect as a campaign tool in the midst of his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/7-devastating-economic-stats-prove-biden-economy-failing-american-people\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">horrible economic policies<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"firefly-poll-container\">\n<p>Should domestic energy production be a priority for America?<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Former President Donald Trump, for one, blasted Biden for the sale, saying \u201cAnd so he\u2019s trying to stop that because high gasoline prices are not good for elections,\u201d during comments in New York.<\/p>\n<p>Trump added that Biden is selling off the reserve now \u201cbecause he\u2019s unable to drill properly.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">\u201cEverything [Biden\u2019s] done has been very bad for our country.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>President Trump slams Biden for releasing 1 million more barrels from the strategic oil reserves to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/biden-makes-massive-move-that-may-help-chances-against-trump-aims-at-lowering-gas-prices-after-big-decision\/\" title=\"Biden's Bold Move to Boost Chances Against Trump: Focus on Lowering Gas Prices\">artificially lower gas prices ahead<\/a> of the election.<\/p>\n<p>Watch LIVE\u27a1 <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/aeKhZCtVbe\">https:\/\/t.co\/aeKhZCtVbe<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Watch more <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/HumanEvents?\">@HumanEvents<\/a>\u2026 <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/ZXDnn3uBnZ\">pic.twitter.com\/ZXDnn3uBnZ<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Real America\u2019s Voice (RAV) (@RealAmVoice) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RealAmVoice\/status\/1792987383811526732?\">May 21, 2024<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Republican Sen. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/sen-mike-lee-epic-proposal-enhance-trump-vs-biden-debate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mike Lee<\/a> of Utah also blasted the sale plans. According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/05\/21\/us-news\/biden-sells-off-gasoline-reserves-to-keep-prices-low-before-election\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New York Post<\/a>, he said that Biden is \u201cyet again using America\u2019s emergency fuel reserves to cover for his disastrous inflationary policies in an election year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tennessee Republican Sen. Marsh Blackburn also took aim at the announcement, saying, \u201cReleasing 1 million barrels of gasoline from the Northeast reserve is a desperate move by Joe Biden to lower prices that HE raised. This reserve is meant for emergencies, not as a cover-up for Biden\u2019s failed economic policies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to Tim Evans, an independent analyst at Evans on Energy, if there is any effect on prices, it won\u2019t last long.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe added cushion of commercial inventories is bearish for the market at the margin,\u201d Evans said according to S&#038;P. \u201cAt the same time, it\u2019s worth bearing in mind that the extra supply is the equivalent of 1,000 futures contracts, a volume that might be easily absorbed. This is also a one-time transfer and not a source of ongoing supply.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps because there will be little long-term effect, the market had little reaction to the announcement of the sale. \u201cNew York gasoline barge prices were unchanged and little traded by midday May 21,\u201d S&#038;P added.<\/p>\n<p>Biden has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/revealed-biden-taken-200-actions-increase-gas-prices-highlight-top-3\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">presided<\/a> over some of the highest gasoline prices in U.S. history and Americans are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/another-grocery-staple-surging-record-high-days-cheap-breakfasts-gone\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">spending<\/a> more of their income than ever just to pay their bills and purchase their daily needs.<\/p>\n<p>This release will not likely have any real beneficial effects on that, but Biden will play it as if he is helping those most in need.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<div>\n<p><b><i>A Note from Our Deputy Managing Editor:<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p><i><span>\u201cWe don\u2019t even know if an election will be held in 2024.\u201d Those 12 words have been stuck in my head since I first read them. <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span>Former Lt.
