The bill&#8217;s \u2064impact on civil liberties and \u2064surveillance necessitates thoughtful evaluation.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<header> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/commentary\/\">  Commentary <\/a>   <span> <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/author\/sshort\/\">  <\/a> <\/p>\n<p> <span>   By <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/author\/sshort\/%20\"><span>Samuel Short<\/span><\/a> <\/span> <span>   May 23, 2024 at 2:00pm <\/span> <\/span>  <\/header>\n<section>\n<p>Benjamin Franklin put it best: \u201cThose who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While this quote became especially relevant during the COVID-19 pandemic, California\u2019s latest actions fuel its timeless status.<\/p>\n<p>A bill passed in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/trump-backed-candidate-wins-house-special-election-california-adding-gops-majority\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">California<\/a> state Senate on Tuesday during its first vote would require all new vehicles sold in the state by 2032 to beep at drivers who exceed the speed limit by at least 10 miles per hour, <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/california-speed-limits-legislature-beep-a3929fb17849ee93827b8575610dca12\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Associated Press<\/a> reported.<\/p>\n<p>The system would emit \u201ca brief, one-time visual and audio signal to alert the driver,\u201d the report said.<\/p>\n<p>The technology to achieve this \u2014 intelligent speed assistant \u2014 is not novel. The AP reported it has been used in the European Union for years. Later this year, all new car sales in the EU will require its implementation, but drivers will have the option to turn it off.<\/p>\n<p>The outlet noted the likelihood of the broader stakes at play with the bill. The auto manufacturing industry in California is large enough that new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/report-new-tesla-model-2-slated-to-cost-around-25k\/\" title=\"Report: New Tesla Model 2 slated to cost around K\">cars made<\/a> there and sent to other states may include the technology anyway.<\/p>\n<p>The bill\u2019s author, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/top-official-warns-democrats-biden-may-not-appear-ballot-crucial-state-dont-cooperate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Democratic<\/a> Sen. Scott Weiner said, \u201cResearch has shown that this [technology to reduce speed] does have an impact in getting people to slow down, particularly since some people don\u2019t realize how fast that their car is going.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His Republican colleagues expressed skepticism about the government\u2019s role in that.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s just a nanny state that we\u2019re causing here,\u201d state Sen. Brian Dahle said, according to the AP.<\/p>\n<div id=\"firefly-poll-container\">\n<p>Do you support a law requiring that vehicles alert drivers when they are speeding?<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>In November, the National Transportation Safety Board <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ntsb.gov\/news\/press-releases\/Pages\/NR20231114.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recommended<\/a> a requirement that all <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/biden-banning-gas-powered-cars-new-proposal-see-vehicles-disappear-lots-7-years\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">new cars<\/a> feature speeding alerts.<\/p>\n<p>The National Highway and Traffic Safety Administration <a href=\"https:\/\/crashstats.nhtsa.dot.gov\/Api\/Public\/ViewPublication\/813473.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">estimated<\/a> that 10 percent of crashes reported to police in 2021 were related to speeding.<\/p>\n<p>The agency said about 35 percent of California\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/washington-cops-forced-to-allow-violent-criminals-to-flee-crime-scenes-after-new-police-reforms\/\" title=\"Washington Cops Forced To Allow Violent Criminals To Flee Crime Scenes After New Police Reforms\">traffic fatalities<\/a> were speeding-related.<\/p>\n<p>Looking at the issue on paper, the bill seems sensible, but the broader implications should be considered. Where would this legislation take Californians or the country as a whole?<\/p>\n<p>The intelligent speed assistant keeps a record of speeds it takes from a database and then compares that with the driver.<\/p>\n<p>Surely, if the driver is going to be alerted about his or her excessive speed \u2014 that is, law-breaking \u2014 then the police could be alerted as well. The possibilities could go further as automatic speeding tickets could be issued.<\/p>\n<p>Given the push from President Joe Biden\u2019s administration for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/trump-campaign-blasts-bidens-new-extreme-electric-vehicle-mandate-promises-day-one-reversal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">electric vehicles<\/a>, should we not also expect engines to be cut off if the driver refuses to comply?<\/p>\n<p>The United States should not follow the European Union on anything as the latter has ballooned into an excessive superstate trampling on the liberties of the common person.<\/p>\n<p>Dahle framed the bill as creating a \u201cnanny state,\u201d but that is too benign given the implications.<\/p>\n<p>Tyranny does not often come in one cataclysmic moment. It can be death by a thousand paper cuts. Small changes that impact <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/sign-times-us-civil-war-likely-soon-chilling-percentage-americans-say-poll\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Americans\u2019<\/a> ability to move freely can lead down that path.<\/p>\n<p>If Weiner and other Democrats are pure in their intentions, they believe the outcome can be put aside. Look less at the intentions and more at the outcome. It does not soften the blow when freedoms are taken away to say it was well-meaning.<\/p>\n<p>While the NTSB lacks legal authority, the agency can certainly push for it from the top down. Did the Founders intend for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/grieving-mom-takes-fight-biden-administration-files-lawsuit-federal-government\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">federal government<\/a> to be riding shotgun with its own brake pedal?<\/p>\n<p>Of course, the counterargument from well-meaning folks is that this will reduce the dangers of driving.<\/p>\n<p>As <a href=\"https:\/\/www.monticello.org\/research-education\/thomas-jefferson-encyclopedia\/i-prefer-dangerous-freedom-over-peaceful-slavery-quotation\/#:~:text=%22I%20prefer%20dangerous%20freedom%20over,to%20the%20quiet%20of%20servitude.%22\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Thomas Jefferson put it<\/a> to his fellow Virginian and Founding Father, James Madison, \u201cI prefer dangerous freedom over peaceful slavery.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Freedom is certainly dangerous, but it\u2019s also fragile and in need of defending.<\/p>\n<p>Some realized this amid governments\u2019 expansion of power during the pandemic, and they would do best to remember it now.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<div>\n<p><b><i>A Note from Our Deputy Managing Editor:<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p><i><span>\u201cWe don\u2019t even know if an election will be held in 2024.\u201d Those 12 words have been stuck in my head since I first read them. <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span>Former Lt.
