Schill, alongside \u2062other <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/report-campus-anti-semitism-skyrockets-even-as-coronavirus-forces-remote-learning\/\" title=\"Report: Campus Anti-Semitism Skyrockets Even as Coronavirus Forces Remote Learning\">university leaders<\/a>, testified about campus protests.\u2064 He faced criticism for the committee&#8217;s appointments and handling of antisemitism issues. Investigations into related\u200d student conduct are ongoing.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/northwestern-university\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Northwestern University<\/a> President Michael Schill vowed on Thursday to recreate a school <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/antisemitism\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>antisemitism<\/a> task force after the previous one disbanded because seven of its members resigned in protest of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/education\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>school<\/a>\u2018s capitulation to pro-Palestinian protester demands.<\/p>\n<p>Schill, along with Rutgers University President Jonathan Holloway and University of California, Los Angeles, Chancellor Gene Block, testified before the House Education and Workforce Committee regarding their schools\u2019 responses to major protests on their campuses. Republicans piled on Schill in particular during the hearing, slamming the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.northwestern.edu\/leadership-notes\/2024\/april-29-agreement-on-deering-meadow.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>agreement<\/a> Northwestern made with protesters, as well as the lack of discipline anyone involved has received.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou and your administration have cited the creation of this committee as proof you are working to counter antisemitism,\u201d Rep. Tim Walberg (R-MI) said to Schill. \u201cThe three faculty members you appointed to it had objected to the committee\u2019s very creation in a letter that downplayed antisemitism and defended the phrase \u2018From the river to the sea [Palestine will be free].\u2019 At least two of them have supported [boycott, divestment, and sanctions] efforts against Israel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Walberg asked why Schill believed \u201cit was appropriate to appoint faculty members who have defended and made excuses for antisemitism and oppressed and opposed the committee\u2019s purported mission of combating antisemitism?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Schill would not commit to ensuring those same faculty members would not serve on the to-be-reconstituted antisemitism task force but said he would appoint those \u201cwho I believe are committed to fighting antisemitism and as committed to fighting antisemitism as I am.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/community-remembers-yale-student-killed-in-conn-2\/\" title=\"Community remembers Yale student killed in Conn.\">university president<\/a> also consistently refused to answer questions about specific staff and students, including anthropology professor Jessica Winegar, whom Walberg pointed to as \u201ca leader of academic boycott efforts against Israel\u201d despite her being on the antisemitism task force.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe has also referred to \u2018Zionist media\u2019 and condemned \u2018white liberal dialogue politics,\u2019 and she signed a petition defending a Palestinian terrorist who murdered two Israeli college students in a bombing,\u201d Walberg said, asking if Schill would say that Winegar is \u201cgrossly unfit\u201d to be serving in a role meant to combat antisemitism.<\/p>\n<p>Schill said that he does not believe in the BDS movement but would not discuss Winegar directly or her ideology indirectly.<\/p>\n<p>To date, Northwestern has not suspended or expelled any students related to the pro-Palestinian protests, but Schill said that there are open investigations and stressed the importance of \u201cdue process\u201d when asked about the status of those investigations. He explained that cases are under review at the conduct and Title VI offices, which was an inadequate answer for Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-NY), who told the Northwestern president that \u201cthis is why you earned an F\u201d rating from the Anti-Defamation League.<\/p>\n<p>Stefanik later called for Schill\u2019s resignation, as she has done with other university leaders who have testified before Congress.<\/p>\n<p>Schill did say the school was revising its code of conduct, but did not get into specifics. However, he did stress the importance of freedom of speech and academic freedom as \u201ccore values\u201d and noted in his opening remarks that \u201cthe line between protected speech and harassment or discrimination can be very thin.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He also said making concessions to protesters to end the encampment was preferable to calling in police, as he argued the police and students\u2019 safety could have been at risk if the university involved law enforcement.<\/p>\n<p>Rutgers University also made <a href=\"https:\/\/newbrunswick.rutgers.edu\/sites\/default\/files\/2024-05\/AGREEMENT_05072024.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>concessions<\/a> to protesters, something which Holloway was slammed for during the hearing as well. <\/p>\n<p>Rutgers accepted eight of 10 concessions from the protesters, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/two-year-sentences-expected-for-anti-police-rioters-who-set-govt-vehicles-on-fire-destroyed-city\/\" title=\"Two-Year Sentences Expected For\u00a0Anti-Police Rioters Who Set Govt Vehicles On Fire, Destroyed City\">including setting<\/a> up plans for an Arab and Muslim student center and developing training sessions focused on anti-Muslim and anti-Palestinian bias.<\/p>\n<p>Rep. Glenn Grothman (R-WI) noted that the Rutgers agreement with protesters included admission for 10 displaced Palestinians.
