The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/confederate-monument-at-arlington-national-cemetery-can-stay-for-now-judge-rules\/\" title=\"Judge allows Confederate monument to remain at Arlington Cemetery\">monument features<\/a> a\u2064 Confederate soldier atop a pedestal with\u200c the inscription &#8220;In appreciation of our faithful slaves.&#8221;  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div data-td-block-uid=\"tdi_78\">\n<p>Residents in Tyrrell County, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/north-carolina\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>North Carolina<\/a>, filed a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/anti-sex-trafficking-advocates-slam-twitter-on-heels-of-bombshell-lawsuit-from-teen-victim\/\" title=\"Anti-Sex Trafficking Advocates Slam Twitter On Heels Of Bombshell Lawsuit From Teen Victim\">federal lawsuit<\/a> to remove a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/confederate-flag\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Confederate monument <\/a>\u201cin appreciation of our faithful slaves.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Concerned Citizens of Tyrrell County filed the lawsuit in the Eastern District of North Carolina on grounds that the monument violates the Equal Protection Clause of the 14th Amendment because it \u201cexpresses a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/racial-discrimination\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>racially discriminatory<\/a> message.\u201d The monument depicts a Confederate soldier on top of a pedestal with the inscription \u201cIn appreciation of our faithful <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/slavery\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>slaves<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is sort of the only monument in the country on public land that textually endorses slavery,\u201d Jaelyn Miller, an attorney for the plaintiffs, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/05\/23\/us\/nc-confederate-slaves-monument-lawsuit-reaj\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>told CNN<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>The lawsuit says the monument endorsees a \u201cpro-slavery message and a pro-Confederate message.\u201d In turn, the groups said the monument \u201cincite(d) racial hostility\u201d and endangers the plaintiffs\u2019 safety in Tyrrell County.<\/p>\n<p>The lawsuit also argues that the monument infers the notion that \u201cBlack people who were enslaved in Tyrrell County preferred their slavery to freedom\u201d and \u201ccommunicates, on behalf of local <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/government\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>government<\/a>, the idea that Tyrrell\u2019s institutions regard Black people\u2019s rightful place as one of subservience and obedience.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The monument was placed outside of the Tyrrell County courthouse in 1902. Ian Mance, another <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/lawyers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>attorney<\/a> for the group, said the location of the monument was intentional. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was put up in the front yard of what was soon to be the Tyrrell County Courthouse, which opened a few months later, to communicate to people that members of the Black community could not expect to get justice inside of that courthouse,\u201d Mance said.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/washingtonexaminer.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title><strong>CLICK HERE TO READ MORE FROM THE WASHINGTON EXAMINER<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Earlier this month, a North Carolina appeals court <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/north-carolina-confederate-monument-appeals-court-c192b0906f67f264d8c1cae096e0b076\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>unanimously upheld<\/a> a ruling that kept a Confederate monument outside a different courthouse in place.
