Schmidt, who was backed\u200b by George Soros, conceded the race \u200bwith Vasquez securing around 54% of the votes,\u2063 signaling a possible \u200cshift in community direction. Vasquez aims to create a safe and\u200b inclusive environment for all residents. Schmidt, initially elected in 2020 amidst the George Floyd riots, focused on reformative policies during his tenure.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<p>Multnomah County, Oregon, District Attorney Mike Schmidt \u2014 who oversees the progressive bastion of Portland \u2014 lost his re-election bid on Tuesday night to a moderate candidate who promises to carry out tough-on-crime policies.<\/p>\n<p>Schmidt, the George <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oregonlive.com\/politics\/2024\/05\/multnomah-county-da-mike-schmidt-campaign-gets-boost-from-progressive-philanthropist-george-soros.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Soros-backed<\/a> incumbent, fell to Nathan Vasquez, who previously served as the Multnomah County deputy prosecutor under Schmidt. The leftist DA conceded on Wednesday with results showing that Vazquez had secured around 54% of the vote, Portland\u2019s NBC affiliate KGW 8 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kgw.com\/article\/news\/politics\/elections\/multnomah-county-district-attorney-race-election-results\/283-e5b76f7a-9497-488b-b432-08dc9deec27d\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is looking as if I will not be serving another four years as Multnomah County District Attorney,\u201d Schmidt said. \u201cI have called Nathan Vasquez to congratulate him on his victory. While we do not always see eye to eye, I am committed to a smooth transition.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday night before the race was called, Vasquez said that he was \u201chopeful\u201d that the direction of the community was about to change.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a time where I think a lot of people in our community are looking for that belief, that hope, and I think tonight is going to be a change in that direction,\u201d Vasquez told KGW 8. \u201cAnd I really want to deliver that to our community in a way that feels positive and hopeful, so that everyone in this community feels included, everyone feels like they can have a safe community where they can go to parks, they can go down the street and can really enjoy this wonderful, amazing city and county that we live in, and I\u2019m just so hopeful for tonight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Schmidt was elected in 2020, winning 77% of the vote. He started his role as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/radical-cultural-change-coming-to-america\/\" title=\"Radical Cultural Change Coming to America?\">district attorney<\/a> in August of that year, a term that began during the summer of the George Floyd riots that saw numerous businesses looted and vandalized and a police station <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/nation\/2020\/08\/24\/portland-protests-police-precinct-set-fire\/3427950001\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">set on fire<\/a>. One of Schmidt\u2019s first acts as DA was to <a href=\"https:\/\/katu.com\/news\/local\/multnomah-co-das-policy-on-protest-arrests-focused-on-property-damage-theft-violence\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">institute<\/a> a new policy stating his office would not prosecute George Floyd demonstrators who were charged with certain crimes such as interfering with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/california-sheriffs-tell-newsom-they-wont-enforce-covid-curfew\/\" title=\"California Sheriffs Tell Newsom They Won't Enforce COVID Curfew\">police officer<\/a>, disorderly conduct, criminal trespass, harassment, or rioting unless they committed \u201cdeliberate property damage, theft, or threat of force against another person.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/ashli-babbits-mother-to-jan-6-committee-kiss-my-a\/\" title=\"Ashli Babbit's Mother to Jan 6 Committee: Kiss My A**\">riots died<\/a> down, Portland continued to face high rates of violent crime. Despite a decrease in violent crimes in 2023 in the city, the homicide rate in Portland remained higher than reported numbers prior to 2019, according to Oregon Public Broadcasting. Shoplifting arrests also skyrocketed by 88% in 2023.<\/p>\n<p>Schmidt\u2019s opponent Vasquez also promised to crack down on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/its-now-almost-impossible-to-get-arrested-for-drugs-in-washington-state\/\" title=\"It\u2019s Now Almost Impossible To Get Arrested For Drugs In Washington State\">open-air drug<\/a> use in Oregon\u2019s largest city, a problem that has persisted since Oregon voters decriminalized possession of small amounts of drugs such as fentanyl and heroin in 2020.
