John Barrow by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2024\/05\/21\/us\/elections\/results-georgia-supreme-court.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">10 percentage points<\/a> on Tuesday in a race for a seat on the state\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/hollywood-celebs-rage-in-defeat-after-barrett-confirmation-revolting-disgraceful-unconscionable\/\" title=\"Hollywood Celebs Rage in Defeat After Barrett Confirmation: 'Revolting. Disgraceful. Unconscionable'\">highest court<\/a>. Republican Gov. Brian Kemp appointed Pinson, a former clerk for Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, to the court in 2022. Four seats on the bench were up for reelection, though the other three justices were not challenged.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2-long d-flex justify-content-center\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center; \" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-1678798411\">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1379703300879-0\" class=\"mb-30\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-7f5049bcc1fa70a03e039b43906b111f fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-7f5049bcc1fa70a03e039b43906b111f\"><\/div>\n<p>While the race is technically nonpartisan, Barrow tossed his hat into the race and tried to make the race a referendum on abortion. In 2019, the state passed a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.legis.ga.gov\/legislation\/55445\">law<\/a> prohibiting most abortions after six weeks. The state Supreme Court <a href=\"https:\/\/georgiarecorder.com\/briefs\/justice-pinson-wins-tight-court-race-that-became-referendum-on-abortion-rights-in-georgia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">rejected<\/a> one challenge to the law already, though a challenge alleging the law violates the state Constitution is pending in Fulton County Superior Court.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m running for the Supreme Court of Georgia because I believe that women today have the same rights under the state constitution that they used to have under <em>Roe vs. Wade<\/em>, before it was overturned with the help of my opponent, and that\u2019s why I\u2019m running and that\u2019s why I\u2019m running against him,\u201d Barrow told <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/campaign\/4675358-georgia-state-supreme-court-fight-puts-abortion-front-and-center\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Hill<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Barrow\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/barrowforgeorgia.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">campaign website<\/a> also emphasized his desire to allow the killing of unborn babies \u2014 or, as he euphemistically put it in a front-and-center banner on the site, to \u201cprotect the right of women and their families to make the most personal family and health care decisions they\u2019ll ever make.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/georgiarecorder.com\/2024\/05\/22\/georgians-settle-many-races-on-the-primary-ballot-including-surprise-contest-over-abortion-rights\/#:~:text=Barrow%20came%20up%20short%20Tuesday,women%20know%20they%20are%20pregnant.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Georgia Recorder<\/a> got some voters to praise Barrow\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/nbcs-yamiche-alcindor-on-possible-end-to-roe-v-wade-some-woman-feel-like-someone-has-died\/\" title=\"NBC\u2019s Yamiche Alcindor on Possible End to Roe v. Wade: Some Woman Feel \u201cLike Someone Has Died\u201d\">pro-abortion position<\/a>. Jeff Evans of Coweta County claimed Republicans have lost \u201cevery time\u201d abortion was \u201con the table,\u201d and told the paper \u201cI hope that happens here.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-bf501e80de53ab92a3ba89422e345955 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-6\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-bf501e80de53ab92a3ba89422e345955\"><\/div>\n<p>But Barrow\u2019s opponent argued the former congressman was \u201crunning a hyper-partisan campaign based on promising to defy the judicial oath,\u201d according to The Hill. Pinson argued that Barrow\u2019s outspoken affinity for abortion showed a disregard for the duty of the judiciary and was akin to supporting \u201ca system of partisan politicians in black robes,\u201d according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/05\/21\/us\/politics\/georgia-supreme-court-andrew-pinson.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The New York Times<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, the state\u2019s Judicial Qualifications Commission registered a complaint that Barrow\u2019s commentary about abortion \u201ccommits the candidate with respect to issues likely to come before the court that are inconsistent with the impartial performance of the adjudicative duties of judicial office.\u201d The commission sent Barrow a <a href=\"https:\/\/georgiarecorder.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/65c464b3-ddea-409a-9783-ea8eb4473085.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">letter<\/a> rebuking him for flaunting the state\u2019s judicial code of ethics. Barrow challenged the complaint, but a federal judge rejected his claims.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Democrats Hitch Their Wagons to Abortion<\/h2>\n<p>Barrow attempted to garner support by making what is supposed to be a nonpartisan race into a referendum on abortion. Voters didn\u2019t bite.<\/p>\n<p>A January <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kofc.org\/en\/news-room\/articles\/marist-poll-consistent-consensus-supports-legal-limits-abortion.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">poll<\/a> conducted by Knights of Columbus-Marist revealed 66 percent of Americans support abortion limits and that approximately 6 in 10 support limiting abortions to the first trimester. Contrary to the narrative pushed by Democrats and their corporate media allies, Democrats\u2019 radical, abortion-on-demand-up-to-birth is not popular with most Americans.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-e98788af70b2571f7259e395a5c833bd fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-10\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-e98788af70b2571f7259e395a5c833bd\"><\/div>\n<p>Even when Democrats use dishonest messaging and infusions of out-of-state cash to ram pro-abortion ballot measures through, the issue doesn\u2019t give Democrats \u201cthe lift they are aiming for,\u201d according to a Politico <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2024\/01\/03\/abortion-democrats-2024-election-00133506\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">analysis<\/a> of five <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/biden-campaign-portrays-texas-abortion-restrictions-as-trumps-ban\/\" title=\"Biden campaign frames Texas abortion restrictions as Trump's ban\">abortion-related ballot initiatives<\/a> that have appeared since <em>Roe v.
