Justice Samuel Alito&#8217;s 6-3 decision \u200bin Alexander v. South Carolina State Conference\u2064 of the NAACP found that the map,\u2062 designed by the Republican-controlled legislature to secure \u200cRepublican dominance in District 1, did not breach the \u2063Constitution. The Supreme Court ruled in favor of the South Carolina congressional map, dismissing claims of racial gerrymandering. The decision, led by Justice Samuel\u2063 Alito in Alexander v. South Carolina State Conference of the NAACP, upheld the map created\u2064 by the Republican-controlled legislature \u200cto maintain Republican representation in District 1, deeming it constitutional.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div data-td-block-uid=\"tdi_78\">\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/supreme-court\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Supreme Court<\/a> ruled on Thursday that a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/south-carolina\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">South Carolina<\/a> congressional map accused of racial gerrymandering can stand, reversing a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/california-appeals-ruling-overturning-assault-weapons-ban\/\" title=\"California Appeals Ruling Overturning Assault Weapons Ban\">district court decision<\/a> that struck down the lines for Rep. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/nancy-mace\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Nancy Mace<\/a>\u2018s (R-SC) district.<\/p>\n<p>Justice Samuel Alito wrote the 6-3 decision in <em>Alexander v. South Carolina State Conference of the NAACP<\/em>, finding that South Carolina\u2019s Congressional District 1 did not violate the Constitution when the state\u2019s Republican-controlled legislature enacted the map to ensure the district remained safe for Republicans.<\/p>\n<figure><figcaption>State Sen. (AP Photo\/Jeffrey Collins)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Alito wrote that the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/hollywood-celebs-rage-in-defeat-after-barrett-confirmation-revolting-disgraceful-unconscionable\/\" title=\"Hollywood Celebs Rage in Defeat After Barrett Confirmation: 'Revolting. Disgraceful. Unconscionable'\">high court<\/a> has navigated the tension that results when there is a high correlation between race and partisan preference \u201cby endorsing two related propositions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>First, he wrote that the party challenging the constitutionality of the map must \u201cdisentangle race and politics if it wishes to prove that the legislature was motivated by race as opposed to partisanship.\u201d He added that \u201cwe stand with a presumption that the legislature acted in good faith.<\/p>\n<p>In January, federal judges ordered South Carolina lawmakers to redraw the congressional map, ruling the coastal 1st District was an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/desantis-blocks-congressional-maps-passed-by-fellow-republicans\/\" title=\"DeSantis Blocks Congressional Maps Passed By Fellow Republicans\">unconstitutional racial gerrymander<\/a> that diminished black voters\u2019 influence under the Constitution\u2019s 14th and 15th amendments.<\/p>\n<p>Justice Elena Kagan dissented from the majority, saying, \u201cWhat a message to send to state legislators and mapmakers about racial gerrymandering.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGo right ahead, this Court says to States today. Go ahead, though you have no recognized justification for using race, such as to comply with statutes ensuring equal voting rights.
