During a\u200c session in the UK House of Commons, Mackinlay was applauded as he expressed his wish\u200c to be known as &#8220;the bionic MP&#8221; and \u2064outlined his efforts to increase awareness about sepsis \u2063and champion improved healthcare services.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Conservative British legislator Craig Mackinlay returned to work on Wednesday, six months after his hands and feet were amputated <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/health\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>due to sepsis<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/united-kingdom\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>United Kingdom\u2019s<\/a> House of Commons joined in a standing ovation for Mackinlay during the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/tensions-rise-in-british-conservative-party-against-mandates-prime-minister-johnson\/\" title=\"Tensions rise in British Conservative Party against mandates, Prime Minister Johnson\">weekly prime minister\u2019<\/a>s question session. (Jordan Pettitt\/PA via AP)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>He also vowed to support Britain\u2019s state-funded National Health Service, which treated him and saved his life, to offer better treatment and prosthetics to people who have lost more than one limb.<\/p>\n<p>Mackinlay, 57, was taken to the hospital on Sept. 28 after feeling unwell. Within half an hour, he said he turned \u201cbright blue\u201d as sepsis caused clotting that stopped blood from getting to his limbs. Doctors later put him in an induced coma and had to amputate his hands and feet below the joints.<\/p>\n<p>He asked Prime Minister Rishi Sunak to ensure the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/oregon-governor-encourages-people-to-call-police-on-neighbors-violating-covid-orders\/\" title=\"Oregon Governor Encourages People To Call Police On Neighbors Violating COVID Orders\">health service<\/a> would \u201cembed recognition of early signs of sepsis\u201d to \u201cstop somebody ending up like this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mackinlay also asked health ministers to ensure the \u201cprovision of appropriate prosthetics.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure><figcaption>Craig Mackinlay, Conservative MP for South Thanet, is applauded by members of Parliament as he returns to the House of Commons for the first time since he was rushed into hospital with sepsis on Sept. 28, which left him with both of his hands and feet amputated, at the Parliament in London, Wednesday, May 22, 2024. (House of Commons\/UK Parliament via AP)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cIn the public gallery are many of the staff from the NHS who took me from where I was, close to death, to where I am today,\u201d Mackinlay said. \u201cThank you for that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news-room\/fact-sheets\/detail\/sepsis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Sepsis<\/a> is a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/fda-lifts-restriction-on-remote-prescriptions-of-abortion-drugs\/\" title=\"FDA Lifts Restriction on Remote Prescriptions of Abortion Drugs\">life-threatening condition<\/a> that happens when the body\u2019s immune system has an extreme response to an infection, causing organ dysfunction. The body\u2019s reaction causes damage to its own tissues and organs, and it can lead to shock, multiple organ failure, and sometimes death.<\/p>\n<p>After suffering from septic shock, Mackinlay\u2019s doctors told his wife he had a 5% chance of survival. When he woke from his induced coma 16 days later, he said his limbs had turned black and were hard \u201clike plastic.\u201d His hands and feet became \u201cdesiccated, clenched and drying,\u201d he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/politics\/2024\/05\/21\/craig-mackinlay-tory-mp-sepsis-quadruple-amputation-pmqs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>told<\/a> the <em>Daily Telegraph<\/em>.
