Despite faculty support, the Corporation enforced \u2063student <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/tiger-moms-maul-virginia-school-board-over-misgendering-rules\/\" title=\"Tiger Moms Maul Virginia School Board Over \u2018Misgendering\u2019 Rules\">handbook rules<\/a> requiring <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/ig-equity-official-used-gov-job-to-boost-her-entirely-duplicative-for-profit-firm\/\" title=\"IG: \u2018Equity\u2019 Official Used Gov Job To Boost Her \u2018Entirely Duplicative\u2019 For-Profit Firm\">good standing<\/a> for graduation. This \u200bdecision\u200c led to the denial of degrees for the protesting students, sparking controversy within\u2063 the university community. Shraddha Joshi, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/asian-leader-embroiled-in-huge-scandal-for-doing-what-creepy-biden-does-all-the-time\/\" title=\"Asian leader involved in major scandal for engaging in behavior similar to that of Biden\">student affected<\/a> by\u2062 the ruling, shared her \u2062experience on social media.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Harvard Corporation broke with the university\u2019s faculty on Wednesday, and voted to deny thirteen seniors from graduating on Thursday because they broke university rules by participating in the 20-day long anti-Israel encampment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Despite the faculty group overwhelmingly voting to confer the degrees to the anti-Israel students, the Corporation cited the student handbook rules requiring good standing for graduation in their decision.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cToday, we have voted to confer 1,539 degrees to Harvard College students in good standing,\u201d the Corporation wrote in a statement on Wednesday, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecrimson.com\/article\/2024\/5\/22\/harvard-corporation-overrides-faculty-vote-disciplined-seniors\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">according to the Harvard Crimson<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. \u201cBecause the students included as the result of Monday\u2019s amendment are not in good standing, we cannot responsibly vote to award them degrees at this time.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Corporation is the university\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/bidens-commerce-secretary-is-a-former-venture-capitalist-but-some-gopers-warn-shell-be-soft-on-china\/\" title=\"Biden\u2019s Commerce Secretary Is A Former Venture Capitalist, But Some GOPers Warn She\u2019ll Be \u2018Soft On China\u2019\">highest governing body<\/a> and consists of 13 members, including Harvard\u2019s interim president, Alan Garber. The annual Faculty of Arts and Sciences is a sparsely attended meeting where faculty vote to approve the list of degrees for conferral, according to the Crimson.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Student Shraddha Joshi <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/C7SNiMhhKHA\/?img_index=1\">posted an email on her Instagram<\/a> that informed her that she would not be graduating this spring. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cBecause of your probation, you are not a student in good standing under the express provisions of the Harvard College Student Handbook, and as a result, the Corporation did not vote to confer your degree,\u201d it states. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Joshi is a co-organizer of the October statement blaming Hamas\u2019s terror attack on Israel, according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/canarymission.org\/individual\/Shraddha_Joshi\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Canary Mission<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Although during the meeting members made the case that they had the authority to allow the students to graduate and approve disciplinary actions, the Corporation disagreed that this power applied in this situation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWe respect each faculty\u2019s responsibility to determine appropriate discipline for its students,\u201d the Corporation wrote. \u201cMonday\u2019s faculty vote did not, however, revisit these disciplinary rulings, did not purport to engage in the individualized assessment of each case that would ordinarily be required to do so, and, most importantly, did not claim to restore the students to good standing.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Corporation also mentioned concerns about the precedent breaking the handbook rules could set. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWe also considered the inequity of exempting a particular group of students who are not in good standing from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/warren-scotus-has-lost-the-respect-of-the-american-people-we-need-more-justices\/\" title=\"Warren: SCOTUS 'Has Lost the Respect of the American People' -- We Need More Justices\">established rules<\/a>, while other seniors with similar status for matters unrelated to Monday\u2019s faculty amendment would be unable to graduate,\u201d the Corporation wrote.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The 20-day encampment drew criticism from many Harvard affiliates including Garber himself who said the protesters were disruptive, caused events and exams to move, and had situations where people were harassed and followed. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThe encampment favors the voices of a few over the rights of many who have experienced disruption in how they learn and work at a critical time of the semester,\u201d Garber <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harvard.edu\/president\/news\/2024\/encampment-in-harvard-yard\/\">wrote<\/a> in a May 6 statement threatening suspension. \u201cI call on those participating in the encampment to end the occupation of Harvard Yard.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The encampment ended last week after administrators negotiated with the anti-Israel students, reportedly agreeing to be lenient to those facing disciplinary action and allowing them to meet with governing boards about divesting from Israel.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">On Friday, the Harvard College Administrative Board suspended five students and placed more than 20 more on probation, according to the Crimson.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Harvard Corporation disagreed with faculty, blocked 13 seniors from graduating for anti-Israel protests.
