Jim McGovern (D-MA) had his \u201coffensive words\u201d about former President <a href=\"http:\/\/washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/donald-trump\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Donald Trump<\/a>\u2018s New York criminal cases struck from the congressional record on Wednesday after <a href=\"http:\/\/washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/house-republicans\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Republicans<\/a> became angry over his remarks, the second time in as many weeks that <a href=\"http:\/\/washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/house-of-representatives\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>House<\/a> proceedings have taken a chaotic turn.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/rules\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Rules Committee<\/a> ranking member delivered opening remarks during debate on a set of GOP bills on cryptocurrency and noncitizen voting, arguing that Republicans were using these bills to \u201cdistract from Donald Trump\u201d and his trial in New York.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey don\u2019t want to talk about the fact that the leader of their party is on trial for covering up hush money payments to a pornography star for political gain, not to mention three other criminal felony prosecutions he\u2019s facing,\u201d McGovern said.<\/p>\n<p>Rep. Jerry Carl (R-AL), who was serving as speaker pro tempore to oversee the debates, responded that he would \u201clike to remind members to refrain from engaging in personalities towards presumed nominees for the office of the president.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure><figcaption>House Rules Committee ranking member Rep. (AP Photo\/Jacquelyn Martin)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>McGovern then went on to say it was \u201cunbelievable\u201d that he was admonished for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/biden-calls-for-ceasefire-in-latest-call-with-israeli-pm-netanyahu\/\" title=\"Biden Calls For Ceasefire In Latest Call With Israeli PM Netanyahu\">giving remarks<\/a> that were \u201cnot my opinion \u2014 it\u2019s just the truth,\u201d yet Republicans who called the trial a \u201csham\u201d on the House floor were not criticized.<\/p>\n<p>While McGovern and Carl debated to determine if the Massachusetts Democrat broke the rules, he criticized the operations of the GOP-led chamber.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s OK to say the jury is rigged, but \u2014 it\u2019s OK to say the court is corrupt but not Trump is corrupting the rule of law,\u201d McGovern said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn this Republican-controlled House, it\u2019s OK to talk about the trial, but you have to call it a sham,\u201d McGovern added.<\/p>\n<p>Rep. Erin Houchin (R-IN) demanded that McGovern\u2019s words be struck from the congressional record, leading to over an hour of pause in deliberation while Carl, McGovern, and Houchin all stood with their teams.<\/p>\n<p>Carl later issued that the prohibition on House members insulting sitting presidents also extends to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/march-12-primaries-what-to-watch-as-biden-and-trump-seek-to-clinch-party-nominations\/\" title=\"March 12 primaries: What to watch as Biden and Trump seek to clinch party nominations\">presumptive presidential nominees<\/a>. Members may critique a candidate\u2019s position, but it is a \u201cbreach of order\u201d to refer to a candidate in \u201cpersonally offensive\u201d terms, \u201cwhether by actually accusing or by merely insulting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Later, outside the House chamber, McGovern told reporters that this was an example of a \u201cdouble standard.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey go to extreme measures to protect Trump, you know, in any which way they can, and they\u2019re awfully sensitive,\u201d McGovern said of Republicans. \u201cI mean, again, read what I said. I didn\u2019t say he was guilty of anything. I just talked about what he was charged with, and that set off this firestorm. That\u2019s too bad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think they\u2019ll keep on trying to find ways to silence people like me because I must be hitting a nerve,\u201d McGovern added.<\/p>\n<p>When asked if he would make the comments again, he said, \u201cDon\u2019t be surprised.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>However, Houchin pushed back against McGovern\u2019s explanation of the incident on the House floor, calling it an \u201cunfair characterization.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe did much more than list out what the counts were,\u201d Houchin said. \u201cThat\u2019s an unfair characterization of what he did in the chamber. It did violate decorum, absolutely, which is why I moved to take his words down.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s one thing for Republicans to say that it\u2019s a sham trial. Last week, a House Oversight hearing descended into chaos, with Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/house\/3007590\/mtg-aoc-crockett-heated-oversight-hearing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">lobbing insults and trading barbs<\/a> with Reps. Jasmine Crockett (D-TX) and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY).<\/p>\n<p>At one point, Greene said, \u201cI think your fake eyelashes are messing up your reading\u201d to Crockett, angering Ocasio-Cortez, who demanded the Georgia Republican to apologize and have the words struck from the record.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Rep.
