Amid ongoing investigations, the \u200bSelect Subcommittee\u200d shared 155 pages of emails\u200d involving \u2064Fauci&#8217;s aide, implicating attempts \u2062to shield Fauci from controversial discussions.\u200c Morens defended his\u2063 actions, citing confusion between\u2063 personal and\u200b work emails.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Emails uncovered by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/house-republicans\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"House Republicans\">House Republicans<\/a> from the senior adviser to former <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/nih\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"House Republicans\">National Institutes of Allergy and Infectious Diseases<\/a> Director Dr. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/Anthony-Fauci\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Anthony Fauci\">Anthony Fauci<\/a> may implicate him in knowledge of the destruction of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/they-lied-internal-emails-suggest-biden-admin-officials-were-involved-in-mar-a-lago-raid-despite-claims-otherwise\/\" title=\"They Lied: Internal Emails Suggest Biden Admin Officials Were Involved in Mar-a-Lago Raid Despite Claims Otherwise\">government documents related<\/a> to the origins of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/coronavirus\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"COVID-19\">COVID-19<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/oversight.house.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/SSCP-Staff-Memo_Morens-5.22.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"David Morens\">private Gmail<\/a> communications from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/policy\/healthcare\/2967675\/house-gop-subpoenas-top-fauci-aide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"David Morens\">David Morens<\/a>, who worked under Fauci since 1998, have become a flashpoint in the investigation from the House <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/house-oversight\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"David Morens\">Select Subcommittee<\/a> on the Coronavirus Pandemic into the National Institutes of Health\u2019s hand in the early days of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/oregon-governor-encourages-people-to-call-police-on-neighbors-violating-covid-orders\/\" title=\"Oregon Governor Encourages People To Call Police On Neighbors Violating COVID Orders\">public health crisis<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>The subcommittee released <a href=\"https:\/\/oversight.house.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/Underlying-Docs_Morens-Memo-5.22.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"155 pages\">155 pages<\/a> of subpoenaed emails from Morens and former NIH employee <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/camed\/profile\/gerald-keusch\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"155 pages\">Gerald Keusch<\/a> just hours before Morens was slated to testify on Wednesday before the panel on allegations that he had intentionally destroyed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/report-taxpayer-funded-university-helped-china-make-economic-decisions\/\" title=\"Report: Taxpayer-Funded University Helped China Make \u2018Economic Decisions\u2019\">federal records<\/a> and deliberately attempted to obscure information from public oversight requests.<\/p>\n<p>Gmail messages sent between Morens and the president of EcoHealth Alliance, Peter Daszak, reference shielding information from Fauci regarding Daszak\u2019s grant project at the Wuhan Institute of Virology, funded by the NIH. The emails also included discussions alluding to other efforts to ensure that there was not a paper trail connecting Fauci to their discussions.<\/p>\n<p>In a Gmail communication sent to Daszak and Keusch, Morens wrote that there is \u201cno worry about [Freedom of Information Act] requests\u201d on April 21, 2021.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can either send stuff to Tony on his private gmail, or hand it to him at work or at his house. He is too smart to let colleagues send him stuff that could cause trouble,\u201d he added. <\/p>\n<p>During the public hearing, Morens said that he and Fauci \u201cusually never talked about\u201d using personal email or phone to communicate with Daszak.<\/p>\n<p>Morens also wrote to Daszak that Fauci and former NIH Director Dr. Francis Collins were intentionally trying to distance themselves from the grant project at the Wuhan lab.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom Tony\u2019s numerous recent comments to me, and from what Francis has been vocal about over the past 5 days, they are trying to protect you [Daszak], which also protects their own reputations,\u201d Morens wrote to Daszak on Oct. 25, 2021.<\/p>\n<p>At the time of the communications in 2020 and 2021, Daszak\u2019s grant that was intended to study bat coronaviruses in southwestern China had been suspended by the Trump administration. <\/p>\n<p>Daszak enlisted Morens, whom he described during congressional testimony as his \u201cmentor,\u201d and Keusch to strategize to reinstate the grant. <\/p>\n<p>Morens defended his actions in testimony Wednesday afternoon, suggesting that he accidentally used the wrong account because both his government email and his personal Gmail account were \u201cfused\u201d in the \u201cblue icon that said mail,\u201d referring to the Mail app that is standard on iPhones.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe IT people in my institute put one icon on my government phone in which emails and emails were fused,\u201d Morens said. \u201cI didn\u2019t think it was a problem because I can usually tell whether a mail I was looking at was Gmail or government mail.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Other documents, though, suggest that he engaged in other efforts to prevent communications from falling into the hands of investigators. Emails showed Morens had been in contact with the FOIA officer for NIH, who instructed him on how to avoid having certain documents be retrieved during federal records requests. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI learned from our FOIA lady here how to make emails disappear after I am FOIA\u2019d but before the search starts, so I think we\u2019re all safe. Plus I deleted most of those earlier emails after sending them to gmail,\u201d Morens wrote in February 2021.<\/p>\n<p>Morens testified, however, that he did not realize that emails were federal records. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was not aware that anything I deleted like emails was a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/republicans-rip-biden-for-abandoning-plan-to-track-chinese-influence-on-college-campuses\/\" title=\"Republicans Rip Biden For Abandoning Plan To Track Chinese Influence On College Campuses\">federal record<\/a>,\u201d Morens said. \u201cIf I\u2019m wrong about that, I apologize because I just never dawned on me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Subcommittee Chairman Brad Wenstrup (R-OH) told the <em>Washington Examiner<\/em> in an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/policy\/healthcare\/3012505\/house-republicans-consider-criminal-charges-fauci-aide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"exclusive interview\">exclusive interview<\/a> ahead of the hearing that the panel would be looking into pursuing criminal charges against Morens with consultation from legal advisers and the Department of Justice.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CLICK HERE TO READ MORE FROM THE WASHINGTON EXAMINER<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>On Wednesday, Sen.
