Lance Gooden (R-TX) is leading a group of House Republicans to press for information related to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/opinion\/2847763\/no-to-any-pandemic-treaty-put-forward-by-the-who\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title><a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/exclusive-house-republicans-call-on-biden-to-withdraw-from-world-health-organization\/\" title=\"EXCLUSIVE: House Republicans Call On Biden To Withdraw From World Health Organization\">proposed pandemic treaty<\/a><\/a>, which is expected to be voted on during the World Health Assembly at the end of this month. The Texas Republican expressed concerns with <a href=\"https:\/\/apps.who.int\/gb\/inb\/pdf_files\/inb9\/A_inb9_3-en.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>the agreement<\/a>, arguing it would unnecessarily expand the powers of the health organization while doing little to prevent another pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe treaty colorfully expresses some of WHO\u2019s lofty aspirations (arrived at without fulfilling even a basic standard of due diligence) while disregarding fundamental concerns over its own administration and conduct in international geopolitics,\u201d Gooden wrote in the letter, which was first obtained by the <em>Washington Examiner. <\/em>\u201cWhile WHO <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/these-7-states-are-working-to-ban-vaccine-passports\/\" title=\"BREAKING: 7 States Have Banned Vaccine Passports, More On The Way\">receives public funding<\/a>, it also receives substantial funds from private sources whose contributions allow them to influence and profit from the organization\u2019s health decisions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The letter comes in response to a recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/pandemic\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>pandemic<\/a> treaty drafted by the 194 member states of the WHO. The agreement seeks to \u201cprevent, prepare for, and respond to pandemics\u201d by implementing provisions that would streamline response strategies and communications in the event of a future pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>However, the proposal has prompted concerns among some who say it would require countries to cede control to the WHO and give the agency power \u201cto declare and impose extensive lockdowns, collude with Big Tech to censor and control information, and regulate international travel,\u201d according to the letter.<\/p>\n<p>However, some public health experts have resisted concerns that the treaty would allow the WHO to impose lockdowns and other policies unilaterally, with the WHO director general calling those claims \u201ccompletely false.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t have the power to do that,\u201d Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/well\/2024\/02\/03\/pandemic-treaty-mission-critical-for-humanity-world-health-organization-chief-tedros-says-warwick-economic-summit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>said earlier this year<\/a>. \u201cWe don\u2019t want it. We\u2019re not trying to get it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lawmakers have also expressed concerns about a provision in the treaty that states the WHO should receive 20% of the production of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/biden-admin-negotiates-deal-to-give-who-authority-over-u-s-pandemic-policies\/\" title=\"Biden Admin Negotiates Deal to Give WHO Authority Over U.S. Pandemic Policies\">pandemic-related products<\/a> such as tests, treatments, and vaccines. That proposal originated from the vaccine gap that emerged during the COVID-19 pandemic between high-income and developing countries. <\/p>\n<p>Several Republicans have argued doing so would surrender U.S. intellectual property rights, prompting the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/House-Republicans\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>House GOP<\/a> lawmakers to press for answers on whether entering into the agreement would allow China to displace the United States as a major, viable intellectual property market.<\/p>\n<p>The group of lawmakers outlined a number of other questions they want to see answered by the agency to ensure there is no opportunity for \u201cabuse of power, which will only intensify with the advent of the \u2018pandemic treaty.\u2019\u201d These questions include whether the implementation of a treaty would impose financial costs or burdens on the Treasury or if compensation will be provided to patent holders who develop pandemic-related products.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt this time, we oppose granting any additional authority or resources to the WHO that would compromise the sovereignty of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/United-States\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>United States<\/a>,\u201d the letter states. \u201cAdditionally, we are opposed to granting WHO any additional authority until there is a full and complete investigation into the origin of the COVID-19 pandemic and WHO\u2019s role in covering up the Chinese government\u2019s likely role in its origin.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>CLICK HERE TO READ MORE FROM THE WASHINGTON EXAMINER<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>At least nine GOP lawmakers have signed on to the letter<strong>,<\/strong> which was also sent to Department of Health and Human Services Secretary <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/Xavier-Becerra\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Xavier Becerra<\/a>. Those lawmakers include Reps.
