Byd\u00e9n&#8217;s apprehensions center on Putin&#8217;s focus on the Baltic area and Gotland island. Tensions escalate due to Russia&#8217;s \u200cproposed maritime border \u200calterations, prompting unease among neighboring states, notably Lithuania.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Russian President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/Vladimir-Putin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Vladimir Putin<\/a> wants to \u201cgain control of the Baltic Sea\u201d and threaten <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/nato\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>NATO<\/a>, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/Sweden\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Sweden<\/a>\u2019s top military officer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPutin\u2019s goal is to gain control of the Baltic Sea,\u201d Gen. Micael Byd\u00e9n, the chief of defense for the Swedish armed forces, told German media outlets, per <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/russia-putin-eyes-sweden-gotland-baltic-sea-army-chief\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title><em>Politico<\/em><\/a>. \u201cThe Baltic Sea must not become Putin\u2019s playground where he\u00a0terrifies\u00a0NATO members.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Byd\u00e9n, who has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nato.int\/cps\/en\/natohq\/who_is_who_221068.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>served<\/a> as Swedish chief of defense since 2015, avowed that \u201cPutin even has both eyes on Gotland\u201d \u2014 a large Swedish island in the Baltic Sea that has been part of NATO territory since March. And his warning coincided with the publication of a draft Russian government document that stoked regional fears that Moscow intends to enact unilateral changes of Russia\u2019s maritime borders in the Baltic Sea.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is nothing political here, although the political environment has seriously changed since then,\u201d Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Wednesday, per <a href=\"https:\/\/tass.com\/politics\/1791641\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title><em>Tass<\/em><\/a>. \u201cYou see how tensions are escalating, what level of confrontation is, especially in the Baltic region. Of course, this requires our relevant agencies to take appropriate steps to ensure our security.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Peskov offered that comment after the Russian Defense Ministry published a draft document that contemplated shifting Moscow\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/meduza.io\/en\/feature\/2024\/05\/22\/confusion-is-an-element-of-hybrid-influence\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>delineation<\/a> of the \u201cinternal waters of the Russian Federation.\u201d That document, <a href=\"https:\/\/meduza.io\/en\/feature\/2024\/05\/22\/confusion-is-an-element-of-hybrid-influence\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"published\">published<\/a> Tuesday, drew a protest from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/Lithuania\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Lithuania\">Lithuania<\/a>, another NATO ally bordering the Baltic Sea.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRussia\u2019s actions are seen as a deliberate, targeted, escalatory provocation to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/desantis-warns-china-key-player-behind-russia-ukraine-hamas-israel-conflicts\/\" title=\"DeSantis cautions China's involvement in Russia-Ukraine and Hamas-Israel conflicts.\">intimidate neighboring countries<\/a> and their societies,\u201d a Lithuanian Foreign Ministry spokesperson <a href=\"https:\/\/eu.mfa.lt\/default\/en\/news\/position-on-media-reports-about-legislative-amendments-planned-in-russia-related-to-state-maritime-boundaries\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>said<\/a> in a Wednesday statement. \u201cThis is further proof that Russia\u2019s aggressive and revisionist policy is a threat to the security of neighboring countries and Europe as a whole.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lithuanian Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis added that he regards the document as part of Russia\u2019s \u201chybrid\u201d warfare with Western powers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnother Russian hybrid operation is underway, this time attempting to spread fear, uncertainty and doubt about their intentions in the Baltic Sea,\u201d he <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/GLandsbergis\/status\/1793183674847862872\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>wrote<\/a> on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/why-this-average-american-is-voting-for-donald-trump\/\" title=\"Why This Average American Is Voting for Donald Trump\">social media<\/a>. \u201cThis is an obvious escalation against NATO and the EU, and must be met with an appropriately firm response.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Russian authorities removed the document later Wednesday, as an unnamed Russian defense official told state media that \u201cthere has been and is no plan to revise the width of territorial waters, the economic zone, continental shelf off the mainland or lines of Russia\u2019s border in the Baltic.\u201d Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo downplayed the significance of the briefly seen document.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is probably a routine inspection and media reports have stated there that they are not engaging in any political maneuvering,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/yle.fi\/a\/74-20089990\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>said<\/a> Orpo, whose country applied for NATO membership alongside Sweden after Russia launched the full-scale war in Ukraine. \u201cThis of course is a good direction.
