The bill&#8217;s backing remains uncertain.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div data-td-block-uid=\"tdi_78\">\n<p>Senate Majority Leader <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/chuck-schumer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Chuck Schumer\">Chuck Schumer<\/a> (D-NY) on Wednesday teed up legislation for June that would codify federal protections for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/contraception\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"contraception\">contraception<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The move comes after presumptive Republican presidential nominee <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/donald-trump\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Donald Trump\">Donald Trump<\/a> teased he could back <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/trump-preparing-interesting-policy-announcement-about-contraception-restrictions\/\" title=\"Trump is set to unveil a compelling policy on contraception restrictions\">contraception restrictions<\/a> and as Democrats campaign on women\u2019s reproductive health as the party\u2019s primary policy issue ahead of the November elections.<\/p>\n<p>The legislation is unlikely to garner the support of at least nine Republicans needed to clear the chamber\u2019s 60-vote threshold.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow more than ever, contraception is a critical piece of protecting women\u2019s reproductive freedoms, standing as nothing short of a vital lifeline for millions of American women across the country,\u201d Schumer said on the Senate floor.<\/p>\n<p>Trump told a Pittsburgh TV station in an interview that aired earlier this week he was \u201clooking at\u201d new contraception restrictions but quickly backpedaled on social media, saying he\u2019d \u201cnever, and will never advocate imposing restrictions on birth control or other contraceptives.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The bill, led by Sens. Ed Markey (D-MA) and Mazie Hirono (D-HI), would render contraception a \u201cfundamental right\u201d at the national level. Access to birth control has been in the spotlight after <em>Roe v. Wade <\/em>was overturned and as Republican-controlled states limit abortion access.<\/p>\n<p>Senate Republicans earlier this year blocked the unanimous passage of a bill to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/instagram-user-raises-more-than-1-million-for-planned-parenthood-to-spite-rush-limbaugh\/\" title=\"Instagram User Raises More Than  Million For Planned Parenthood To Spite Rush Limbaugh\">protect access<\/a> to in vitro fertilization, following a controversial Alabama Supreme Court ruling that embryos were children.<\/p>\n<p>The Senate GOP, led by Sens. Ted Cruz (R-TX) and Katie Britt (R-AL), has since sought to blunt Democratic criticism by introducing its own version that would <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/gop-lawmaker-to-introduce-bill-to-ban-private-businesses-from-requiring-proof-of-covid-19-vaccination\/\" title=\"GOP Lawmaker To Introduce Bill To Ban Private Businesses From Requiring Proof Of COVID-19 Vaccination\">ban states<\/a> from receiving Medicaid funding if they banned IVF.
