Wade<\/em> in an effort to win voters in potentially crucial swing states.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cSenate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) is planning to zero in on reproductive rights next month,\u201d Axios <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2024\/05\/22\/senate-democrats-plot-reproductive-rights-blitz\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a>. \u00a0Sen. Debbie Stabenow (D-MI), the No. 3 Senate Democrat, said, \u201cWe are certainly going to be talking a lot about [abortion].\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI imagine that there\u2019ll be some more <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/schumer-gives-democrats-deadline-on-biden-agenda-bills-debt-ceiling\/\" title=\"Schumer Gives Democrats Deadline On Biden Agenda Bills, Debt Ceiling\">policy legislation<\/a> that will be discussed \u2014 whether it\u2019s on the floor or through committee gatherings,\u201d Sen. Ben Ray L\u00fajan (D-NM) echoed.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Democrats went on the attack after Alabama\u2019s Supreme Court <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/alabama-supreme-court-says-couple-can-continue-wrongful-death-lawsuit-over-destruction-of-frozen-embryos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ruled<\/a> in mid-February that embryos are children, thus imperiling the use of in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/human-experimentation-and-gene-editing-inside-chinas-race-to-create-genetically-modified-soldiers\/\" title=\"Human Experimentation And Gene-Editing: Inside China\u2019s Race To Create Genetically Modified Soldiers\">vitro fertilization<\/a> (IVF). Within a week, Sen. Tammy Duckworth (D-IL) introduced the \u2018\u2018Access to Family Building Act,\u2019\u201d which would protect the right to IVF treatment; she asked for a unanimous consent vote on her bill, which could have let the bill evade the normal process of review. The bill was blocked by Senate Republicans, who felt the legislation was too broad.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cIf passed, the AFBA would give <em>any<\/em> adult the statutory right to create a child using <em>any<\/em> reproductive technology, including the cloning and genetic editing made possible by CRISPR,\u201d the Heritage Foundation <a href=\"https:\/\/www.heritage.org\/life\/commentary\/tammy-duckworths-ivf-push-meets-gop-wall\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">noted<\/a>. \u201cIndeed, the bill \u2018pre-empt[s] any state effort to limit such access,\u2019 meaning that states would be helpless to pass common-sense regulations for IVF that guard against ethical abuses. Colorado\u2019s prohibition on anonymous gamete donation and Louisiana\u2019s embryo protection law, for example, would be in jeopardy if Duckworth\u2019s bill becomes law.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">But the Alabama GOP-dominated legislature then <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/alabama-ivf-lawmakers-bill-governor\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">passed a bill<\/a> in early March, signed by Governor Kay Ivey, that protected in vitro fertilization providers from any potential legal liability, making it a moot issue.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">On Monday, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) and Sen. Katie Britt (R-AL) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/ted-cruz-katie-britt-ivf-access-bill\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">introduced<\/a> the IVF Protection Act.
