The NRCC defended the release as &#8220;tongue-in-cheek&#8221; and \u2064disputed the\u200b seriousness of\u2062 the quotes, triggering a legal dispute. House Democrats voted against bills\u200c supporting Israel, intensifying\u2063 political \u200ctensions.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p><strong>EXCLUSIVE \u2014 <\/strong>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/nrcc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>National Republican Congressional Committee<\/a> is brushing off demands from three freshman <a href=\"http:\/\/washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/house-democrats\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>House Democrats<\/a> to retract a \u201ctongue-in-cheek\u201d press release claiming the lawmakers supported Hamas.<\/p>\n<p>On Friday, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/fncs-carlson-if-youre-looking-for-election-rigging-look-no-further-than-media-treatment-of-hunter-biden-saga\/\" title=\"FNC's Carlson: 'If You're Looking for Election Rigging, Look No Further' Than Media Treatment of Hunter Biden Saga\">legal counsel<\/a> from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/house\/2913244\/marc-elias-tied-group-federal-law-democratic-candidates-watchdog\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Elias Law Group<\/a> representing Reps. Andrea Salinas (D-OR) and Gabe Vasquez (D-NM) and from Olson Remcho LLP representing Rep. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/campaigns\/2977343\/independents-breaking-gop-toss-up-colorado-house-district-polling-memo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Yadira Caraveo<\/a> (D-CO) sent immediate cease and desist letters to the NRCC, accusing the organization of false statements and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/defamation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>defamation<\/a> after they published several press releases with the headline \u201callegedly \u2018quoting\u2019\u201d the representatives saying \u201cI support Hamas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the Democratic letters obtained by the <em>Washington Examiner,<\/em> general counsel Rachel Jacobs and Emma Anspach write on behalf of Salinas and Vasquez, arguing that the members have \u201cnever uttered the phrase, \u2018I support Hamas.\u2019\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cNRCC knows that Representative Vasquez did not make this statement and does not even try to attribute it; this brazen action by NRCC will not go unnoticed,\u201d Jacobs and Anspach wrote. \u201cWe demand that you remove these false and defamatory statements and issue a correction immediately. If you do not comply, we are prepared to pursue all available legal actions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The press release from the NRCC in question had a headline of \u201cI support Hamas\u201d followed by the name of the member, with a line in the body text that said, \u201cNothing says \u2018I support Hamas\u2019 like withholding help from Israel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The NRCC, in three letters to the Democrats\u2019 lawyers and shared exclusively with the <em>Washington Examiner<\/em>, called these releases \u201ctongue-in-cheek\u201d and that the \u201ccommentary\u201d quotes should not be the Democrats\u2019 top priorities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRep. Caraveo argues that the quote is directly attributable to her; despite the fact that the press release goes on to clarify that the title is not a direct quote, but rather a commentary on her recent vote on H.R. 3639 \u2013 Israel Support Assistance Act,\u201d NRCC general counsel Erin Clark wrote in a letter on Monday to Andrew Harris Werbrock, Caraveo\u2019s lawyer, that mirrors the other two he sent to Vasquez and Salinas.<\/p>\n<p>Dylan McArthur, campaign manager for Vasquez, said in a statement to the <em>Washington Examiner<\/em> that \u201cwhen the NRCC admitted to using a fake quote, it was one of the few times they actually told the truth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Clark wrote that while the tone of the release was \u201csarcastic,\u201d Caraveo\u2019s voting record either suggests she supports Hamas or her \u201cunwillingness to stand up [to] the terrorist organization and its sympathizers in her party\u2019s base.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGiven her voting record, I find it surprising that Rep. Caraveo would rather use her time and resources to have her attorney write to the NRCC about their use of quotation marks in a press release than explain her voting record to her constituents,\u201d Clark said.<\/p>\n<p>In similar letters to Salinas and Vasquez, Clark argues that the quotation marks in this press release are used ironically, \u201cas instructed by every major style guide.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne statement on her website that she condemns Hamas does not negate her voting record on the issue,\u201d Clark wrote to Jacobs and Anspach, speaking about Salinas.<\/p>\n<p>Clark argued similarly in a letter to Jacobs and Anspach regarding Vasquez, saying that the New Mexico Democrat can \u201cissue all the press releases he wants claiming to condemn Hamas, but his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/nrcc-blasts-moderate-spanberger-for-radical-voting-record\/\" title=\"NRCC criticizes Spanberger's 'radical voting record', dismisses her as a 'moderate'.\">voting record tells<\/a> a different story.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jacobs and Anspach pushed back on Clark\u2019s claim of how to use quotation marks, arguing that \u201cattributing a fabricated quotation to a speaker in a manner that injures the speaker\u2019s reputation is defamatory.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Supreme Court has held that \u2018quotation marks indicate a verbatim reproduction, and quotations add authority to a statement and credibility to an author\u2019s work,\u2019\u201d Jacobs and Anspach wrote, referring to the <a href=\"https:\/\/supreme.justia.com\/cases\/federal\/us\/501\/496\/\"><em>Masson v<\/em><\/a><em><a href=\"https:\/\/supreme.justia.com\/cases\/federal\/us\/501\/496\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>. New Yorker Magazin<\/a><\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/supreme.justia.com\/cases\/federal\/us\/501\/496\/\"><em>e<\/em><\/a>  court case in 1991.<\/p>\n<p>All three House Democrats, who are in their first term in Congress, voted against the Israel Security Assistance Support Act on Thursday, a bill that condemned President Joe Biden\u2019s threats to pause weapons transfers to Israel if the Jewish state invaded Rafah. The resolution <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/house\/3006901\/house-condemns-biden-pause-weapons-transfers-israel\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>passed largely along party lines<\/a>, with overwhelming GOP support and just 16 Democrats joining in advancing the measure.<\/p>\n<p>The three House Democrats also voted against the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/house\/2973096\/house-approves-foreign-aid-package\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Israel foreign aid package<\/a>, which included $26.38 billion to the Jewish state and about $9 billion in humanitarian aid to civilians in conflict zones, including Gaza. Salinas and Vasquez voted \u201cpresent\u201d on a resolution <a href=\"https:\/\/clerk.house.gov\/Votes\/2023697\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>condemning antisemitism in the U.S. and abroad<\/a>, while Caraveo voted \u201cyes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Caraveo and Vasquez are considered major targets for House Republicans as they seek to expand their razor-thin majority in the 2024 election. Both of their seats are ranked as \u201ctoss-ups\u201d while Salinas\u2019s seat leans Democratic, according to the Cook Political Report.<\/p>\n<p>Jacobs and Anspach demanded in their letters that the NRCC remove the \u201cfalse statements\u201d from the NRCC website, as well as post a correction \u201cinforming the public\u201d that the representatives have \u201cnever said \u2018I support Hamas\u2019 and that your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/viral-video-black-womans-fiery-denunciation-of-critical-race-theory-before-school-board\/\" title=\"VIRAL VIDEO: Black Woman\u2019s Fiery Denunciation Of Critical Race Theory Before School Board\">press release stating<\/a> otherwise was incorrect.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHere, NRCC claims Representative Salinas made a statement that she supports Hamas, an organization that the United States government has classified as a terrorist organization,\u201d Jacobs and Anspach continued. \u201cThis fabricated quotation was clearly meant to injure her reputation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Werbrock demanded in his letter on behalf of Caraveo that NRCC preserve \u201call documents concerning, related to, or involving\u201d the allegations against Caraveo such as research, polling, text messages, emails, and other communications.<\/p>\n<p>The press release\u2019s \u201csole purpose is to subject Representative Caraveo to contempt and ridicule and to injure her reputation and it is plainly false,\u201d Werbrock wrote. \u201cFurther, NRCC knows that Representative Caraveo never made this statement, meaning that NRCC has acted with actual malice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Elias Law Group is considered a key component in the Democratic Party\u2019s legal strategy, particularly in the wake of the 2020 election. It was founded by Marc Elias, Hillary Clinton\u2019s legal counsel during her unsuccessful 2016 election. His firm represents <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/magazine\/2022\/12\/21\/democrats-elias-elections-00073595\">at least 150<\/a> campaigns and members of Congress and the Democratic National Committee itself, according to <em>Politico<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>In 2022, he told <em>Politico <\/em>in an interview that he wants to keep the Republican Party in check, with several of his legal teams going on offense in swing states to battle the false 2020 election denial claims spread by former President Donald Trump and his allies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t want to leave the Republican Party unattended,\u201d Elias said. \u201cI want to babysit them in every case they file.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The NRCC said to the <em>Washington Examiner<\/em> it is \u201cnot backing down\u201d from Elias and \u201cother liberal lawyers\u2019 ridiculous demands.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInstead of supporting Israel and rejecting antisemitism and Hamas, extreme House Democrats try to send their lawyer goons after the NRCC to silence us,\u201d NRCC national press secretary Will Reinert said in an exclusive statement. \u201cIt won\u2019t work.
