The bill, previously linked to\u2062 Ukraine\u200d aid, failed in February. Progressive Democrats still oppose it for lacking pathways to\u2062 citizenship. Senator Schumer aims to prioritize this bill over\u2062 progressive measures. Key members, including Sanders and Booker,\u2063 express concerns about \u200cits content and lack of \u200dinclusivity.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>A failed bipartisan <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/border-security\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"border security\">border security<\/a> measure is on track to receive even less support the second time around when Democrats put it up for another vote in the Senate later this week.<\/p>\n<p>Nearly all Republicans are lined up in opposition while several progressive Democrats indicate they <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/3007243\/senate-democrats-attempt-revive-bipartisan-border-deal-lankford\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"still oppose the bill\">still oppose the bill<\/a> that was previously attached to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/mitch-mcconnell-leads-delegation-of-gop-senators-to-ukraine\/\" title=\"Mitch McConnell Leads Delegation of GOP Senators to Ukraine\">foreign aid package<\/a> for Ukraine and Israel but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/2843032\/bipartisan-border-ukraine-deal-fails-senate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"still oppose the bill\">failed in February after a GOP revolt<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Sen. Alex Padilla (D-CA) was \u201cdisappointed\u201d Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) is holding a second vote without changes to the legislation for pathways to citizenship as Democrats try to put the squeeze on Republicans in an election year on a contentious policy issue.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI certainly hope this is not the new starting point for Democrats when it comes to border or immigration negotiations,\u201d Padilla told the <em>Washington Examiner<\/em>. \u201cWe\u2019ve already voted on it, and it\u2019s already gone down. Time for a new plan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The measure, which was the byproduct of months of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/house-democrats-unveil-1-9-trillion-covid-19-relief-package\/\" title=\"House Democrats Unveil .9 Trillion COVID-19 Relief Package\">bipartisan negotiations<\/a> and centers on restricting illegal immigration and expanding deportations, does not include protections for pathways to citizenship for those who came to the United States illegally as children, known as \u201cDreamers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a price that a lot of my Democratic colleagues were willing to pay months ago in order to ensure we delivered funding to Ukraine. That\u2019s been done,\u201d Padilla said.<\/p>\n<p>Sen. Cory Booker (D-NJ) said he will oppose the legislation after initially voting for it because legal pathways are not included and that it would ultimately fail to \u201caddress the root causes of regional migration\u201d and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/white-house-releases-list-of-president-trumps-accomplishments-and-it-is-historic\/\" title=\"White House Releases List of President Trump\u2019s Accomplishments \u2013  And It Is Historic!\">illegal crossings<\/a>. In a statement, he slammed Republicans for previously opposing it, saying he was \u201cappalled\u201d and that it was the \u201cheight of hypocrisy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI remain committed to pursuing common sense, bipartisan legislation to modernize our immigration system so that it aligns with our most fundamental values,\u201d Booker said.<\/p>\n<p>Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) said she\u2019ll reject the bill for a second time when it comes to a vote on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need border security and a pathway to citizenship for people who are here. The two should be tied,\u201d Warren told the <em>Washington Examiner<\/em>. \u201cThat\u2019s what my vote reflects.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The bill\u2019s February vote was 49-50 but required 60 senators to pass. Five members of the upper chamber\u2019s Democratic caucus voted against, including Padilla, Warren, Bernie Sanders (I-VT), Bob Menendez (D-NJ), and Ed Markey (D-MA). Just four Republicans voted in favor: Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY), Lisa Murkowski (R-AK), Susan Collins (R-ME), and James Lankford (R-OK).<\/p>\n<p>Sanders told the <em>Washington Examiner<\/em> he was undecided on his vote this week but that his previous opposition was because of military aid to Israel that was attached.<\/p>\n<p>Schumer suggested the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/graham-if-dems-try-to-pass-3-5t-far-left-wish-list-then-hell-yeah-gop-should-skip-town-like-tx-dems\/\" title=\"Graham: If Dems Try To Pass .5T Far-Left Wish List Then \u2018Hell Yeah\u2019 GOP Should Skip Town Like TX Dems\">border security bill<\/a> that once had bipartisan backing would be easier to accomplish than measures pushed by progressives to expand legal citizenship.<\/p>\n<figure><figcaption>Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) meets with reporters at the Capitol in Washington, Wednesday, May 15, 2024. Scott Applewhite)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Lankford, the bill\u2019s lead GOP architect, told the <em>Washington Examiner<\/em> last week he\u2019ll vote against what he called Democrats\u2019 \u201cnonserious\u201d effort to pass stronger border security. McConnell will also oppose.<\/p>\n<p>Collins disparaged Democrats\u2019 handling of the issue but remained \u201cuncertain\u201d about how she\u2019ll vote.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s clearly just a messaging ploy by the Democrats, which is unfortunate because we have a real problem,\u201d Collins told the <em>Washington Examiner<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Despite its doomed prospects and the potential for an even worse defeat on the Senate floor, Schumer is forging ahead.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll those who say we need to act on the border will get a chance to show this week that they\u2019re serious about fixing the problem,\u201d Schumer told reporters. \u201cThey\u2019ll get a chance to show whether they\u2019re just talking points to them or whether they want to improve the status quo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>President Joe Biden phoned McConnell and House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) on Monday about the legislation, in which the president told the Republicans to \u201cstop playing politics and act quickly,\u201d according to the White House.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CLICK HERE TO READ MORE FROM THE WASHINGTON EXAMINER<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>McConnell and his deputies doubled down on what\u2019s been Republicans\u2019 main response: Biden can take executive action to curb the illegal immigration crisis anytime he pleases.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMr. President, you caused this problem.
