Andy Ogles of Tennessee introduced a bill on Thursday that would prevent judges from issuing gag orders to defendants in civil and criminal trials.<\/p>\n<p>Should the \u201cLet Trump Speak Act\u201d become law, it would be unlawful for judges to issue suppression orders, according to a copy of the legislation shared by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/let-trump-speak-act-ban-gag-orders-defendants-put-forward-house-gop\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fox News<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The only time when, according to the bill, judges could <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/nancy-pelosis-jan-6-committee-is-following-the-same-pattern-as-the-evil-john-doe-investigation\/\" title=\"Nancy Pelosi\u2019s Jan. 6 Committee Is Following The Same Pattern As The Evil John Doe Investigation\">issue gag orders<\/a> would be in cases where \u201cconfidential information\u201d is brought up as evidence or those where minors are involved.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/americas-governor-desantis-promotes-new-energy-legislation-will-trigger-every-green-zealot\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">legislation<\/a> also allows for gag orders to be implemented as part of a plea agreement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have watched for years as a politically-weaponized Department of Justice and Democrat activist judges have gone after President Donald J. Trump,\u201d Ogles told Fox News.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is no right more sacred to Americans than the right to speak freely, as guaranteed in the First Amendment,\u201d the congressman said, adding \u201cactivists within the justice system are attempting to strip President Trump of this right for the sake of their own political agenda.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Should a judge issue a gag order in contravention of the act, once the bill becomes law, the subject of such an order can sue for injunctive relief at a U.S. district court.<\/p>\n<p>The legislation comes two months after New York State Supreme Court Justice Juan Merchan issued a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/judge-merchan-refuses-let-trump-fire-back-stormy-daniels-testimony-wont-modify-gag-order\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">gag order<\/a> against former President Donald Trump on March 26.<\/p>\n<p>The gag order is in connection with Trump\u2019s \u201chush money\u201d trial, where the former president has been charged with 34 felony counts.<\/p>\n<div id=\"firefly-poll-container\">\n<p>Should Congress pass this bill?<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Merchan\u2019s order silences criticism of witnesses, prosecutors, and court staff by the presumptive Republican presidential candidate, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/house\/4675385-republican-ogles-let-trump-speak-act-ban-gag-orders\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Hill<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The gag order also shields Merchan\u2019s daughter from criticism, although she is a progressive political consultant who has worked for Democratic fundraisers, <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/regulation\/court-battles\/4659565-rick-scott-doubles-down-on-attacks-against-judge-merchans-daughter\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Hill<\/a> reported.<\/p>\n<p>Trump\u2019s legal team has launched an effort to appeal the gag order.<\/p>\n<p>On May 14, the Appellate Division of the New York Supreme Court rejected Trump\u2019s attempt to appeal the gag order, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nycourts.gov\/courts\/ad1\/calendar\/List_Word\/2024\/05_May\/14\/PDF\/Trump%20v%20Merchan%20(2024-02369).pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">court documents<\/a> show.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/court-tosses-223-8-million-verdict-against-jj-in-talc-cancer-case\/\" title=\"J&#038;J's 3.8 million talc cancer verdict overturned by court.\">appellate division ruled<\/a> that \u201cJustice Merchan properly weighed petitioner\u2019s First Amendment Rights against the court\u2019s historical commitment to ensuring the fair administration of justice in criminal cases.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe constitutional objections that petitioner lodges against the Restraining Order\u2019s restrictions on his statements relating to Mr. Colangelo and Ms. Merchan are unavailing,\u201d the court said.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/trump-crushes-biden-latest-fundraising-numbers-tide-turning\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Trump<\/a>, according to Fox News, can now appeal the gag order at the New York Court of Appeals.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis continued weaponization of justice and harassment of President Trump must end,\u201d said Republican Rep.
