The void left by Raisi&#8217;s death sparks speculations about the country&#8217;s stability and future course \u200dof action.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<header> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/commentary\/\">  Commentary <\/a>  <\/p>\n<h2>Iran President&#8217;s Death Could Be More Important Than Anyone Realizes &#8211; Just Look Where He Was Headed<\/h2>\n<p> <span> <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/author\/aanton\/\">  <\/a> <\/p>\n<p> <span>   By <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/author\/aanton\/%20\"><span>Allison Anton<\/span><\/a> <\/span> <span>   May 21, 2024 at 11:22am <\/span> <\/span>  <\/header>\n<section>\n<p>The shocking death of Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi on Sunday has elicited mixed reactions internationally.<\/p>\n<p>Thanks to his brutal reputation as the \u201cButcher of Tehran\u201d because of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/the-butcher-of-tehran-is-dead-and-bidens-state-dept-is-offering-condolences\/\" title=\"The 'Butcher of Tehran' has passed away, and Biden's State Department is extending condolences\">mass political executions<\/a> he oversaw in 1988, many in Iran and elsewhere rejoiced upon hearing of his death.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Joe Biden\u2019s White House and NATO have been publicly ridiculed for expressing \u201ccondolences\u201d for the brutal political figure.<\/p>\n<p>However, as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/e6de080e-8151-4414-a8c7-01d09fb00b57\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Financial Times<\/a> explained, the days of violence and unrest for the Iranian people will not likely end with the death of their bloodthirsty president.<\/p>\n<p>Rather, seeing as, according to Iranian law, the country must hold an emergency election in 50 days, his sudden death in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/helicopter-crash-confirmed-location-iranian-president-unknown\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">helicopter crash<\/a> could instead unleash even more political unrest and violence.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/watch-iranians-break-celebration-notoriously-brutal-president-confirmed-dead\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Raisi<\/a> already facilitated riots and protests when, in 2022, his government arrested 22-year-old Mahsa Amini for allegedly not wearing her hijab properly, and she died in custody.<\/p>\n<p>The subsequent crackdown on protesters saw 500 of them killed, while another 22,000 were arrested, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/ebrahim-raisi-63-butcher-of-tehran-and-khamenei-protege-who-died-in-chopper-crash\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Times of Israel<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Moreover, as the Financial Times pointed out, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/biden-administration-slammed-issuing-odd-statement-iranian-presidents-death\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Raisi<\/a> was considered a shoo-in for a second term and was being groomed to succeed his mentor, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, as supreme leader of Iran (the supreme leader is above the president and serves for life).<\/p>\n<p>Now, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/watch-iranians-break-celebration-notoriously-brutal-president-confirmed-dead\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Raisi\u2019s<\/a> death has left no clear contender for the Iranian presidency and no obvious successor for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/biden-losing-balance-power-key-middle-eastern-ally-shifts-toward-iran-report\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Khamenei<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"firefly-poll-container\">\n<p>Is Iran in danger of chaotic violence?<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Many of the potential presidential candidates are loyalists and supporters of a hardline Islamic regime.<\/p>\n<p>Acting President Mohammad Mokhber, who was vice president under Raisi, is one possibility.<\/p>\n<p>Another is Saeed Jalili, a hardliner who served as Iran\u2019s chief nuclear negotiator, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.middleeasteye.net\/news\/ebrahim-raisi-candidates-succeed-irans-president\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Middle East Eye<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>One <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/the-medias-coverage-of-ron-desantis-shows-they-fear-him-in-2024\/\" title=\"The Media\u2019s Coverage Of Ron DeSantis Shows They Fear Him In 2024\">potential contender<\/a>, Ali Larijani, came from a clerical family like Raisi, while others could come from Iran\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/irans-revolutionary-guard-seizes-ship-transfers-vessel-iranian-waters\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Revolutionary Guard<\/a>, which became much more involved in political affairs under Raisi. Among them is Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf, a former air force commander.<\/p>\n<p>While most <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/house-republicans-urge-biden-to-keep-embassy-in-jerusalem\/\" title=\"House Republicans Urge Biden to Keep Embassy in Jerusalem\">foreign policy analysts<\/a>, including those in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.csis.org\/analysis\/impacts-raisis-death\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Center for Strategic and International Studies<\/a>, don\u2019t expect Iran\u2019s foreign or domestic policies to change all that much, the fact remains that a key figure in the region is now gone.<\/p>\n<p>What will become of Iran?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/ap-meta-removes-instagram-facebook-accounts-irans-supreme-leader-ayatollah-ali-khamenei\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Khamenei<\/a> is 85 and most likely won\u2019t be in his position much longer.<\/p>\n<p>The country is no stranger to violence, and this hasn\u2019t changed lately (in fact, arguably, it has only gotten worse).<\/p>\n<p>And now there is an unexpected <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/watch-israels-iron-dome-lights-dozens-iranian-drones-horrifying-attack\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">power vacuum<\/a> \u2014 and an opportunity for those who want it most to fight their way to the top.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps it could even provide a chance for the populace to rise up and try to overthrow their tyrannical government (though the latter possibility is, admittedly, unlikely).<\/p>\n<p>With new up-and-comers now able to fight for positions of power, will we see more violence in Iran?<\/p>\n<p>As volatile as this region has been historically, the question might not be \u201cif\u201d but \u201cwhen.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr>\n<div>\n<p><b><i>A Note from Our Deputy Managing Editor:<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p><i><span>I heard a chilling comment the other day: \u201cWe don\u2019t even know if an election will be held in 2024.\u201d <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span>That wasn\u2019t said by a conspiracy theorist or a doomsday prophet.
