Nevadans\u200d for Reproductive Freedom amassed \u2063200,000 signatures, doubling the required threshold. If approved, the amendment would secure the right to abortion until\u2064 viability and protect patients&#8217; health. \u200cThe group aims for bipartisan support \u200bin \u20632024.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>An abortion-rights group in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/nevada\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Nevada<\/a> said it has enough signatures to place a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/referendum\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>measure<\/a> on the Nevada ballot that would enshrine <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/abortion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>abortion<\/a> rights into the Nevada Constitution.<\/p>\n<p>Nevadans for Reproductive Freedom, the organization behind the petition, said it collected 200,000 signatures from voters across every county in the state, which is double the 102,362 signature threshold required to qualify. Under Nevada law, the amendment would need to be voted on in both the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/2024-elections\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>2024 general election<\/a> and the 2026 midterm elections before becoming law.<\/p>\n<p>If passed, the amendment would give Nevadans \u201ca fundamental right to abortion performed or administered by a qualified health care practitioner until fetal viability, or when needed to protect the life or health of the pregnant patient, without interference from the state or its political subdivisions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think it shows a lot of bipartisan and a lot of nonpartisan support, and we imagine that a lot of folks, both Republicans and Democrats alike, are going to come out on this issue in 2024,\u201d Lindsey Harmon, president of Nevadans for Reproductive Freedom, <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/Health\/nevada-abortion-rights-group-signatures-petition-ballot-measure\/story?id=110396174\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>told ABC News<\/a>. \u201cAbortion access is overwhelmingly popular in the state of Nevada, and we feel so privileged to be here to make a safe space for patients who are seeking access to care.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The group has also pushed for a second measure, which is broader and would grant Nevada residents the authority to make decisions about \u201call matters relating to pregnancy,\u201d which includes \u201cabortion, birth control, vasectomies, tubal ligation, and infertility care.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Late last year, a lower court blocked the petition from moving forward, saying it was misleading. Last month, however, the Nevada Supreme Court overturned the lower court\u2019s ruling and argued all of the terms were under the general umbrella of \u201creproductive rights.\u201d Still, Nevadans for Reproductive Freedoms said it is going to pursue the more narrow measure. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cObviously for 2024, we are sticking with the language that has been circulated, but it\u2019s important to keep in mind that we need to be proactive and how can we prove that reproductive rights [are] healthcare,\u201d Harmon said. <\/p>\n<p>Republicans in Nevada, who are trying to flip Sen. Jacky Rosen\u2019s (D-NV) seat as well as the state red, will have to grapple with the amendment in November. Veteran Sam Brown is the front-runner for the Republican nominee for Senate ahead of the state\u2019s June 11 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nvsos.gov\/sos\/elections\/election-information\/2024-election-information\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>primary<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>While his <a href=\"https:\/\/captainsambrown.com\/issues\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>campaign website<\/a> says he is \u201cpro-life,\u201d Brown, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/2957228\/trump-draws-line-in-sand-abortion-as-republicans-try-find-footing-pivotal-subject\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>like many Republicans lately<\/a>, has said he believes states should decide abortion policies. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2024\/05\/20\/nevada-senate-republicans-abortion-sam-brown\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Previously<\/a>, Brown led the Nevada branch of the Faith and Freedom Coalition, which is an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/abortion-facility-in-ohio-tossed-preborn-babys-remains-into-dumpster-in-violation-of-state-law-report\/\" title=\"Abortion Facility In Ohio Tossed Preborn Baby\u2019s Remains Into Dumpster In Violation Of State Law: Report\">anti-abortion organization<\/a> that has supported the strictest abortion laws in the country.
