The situation unfolds amid criticism and support from \u200dvarious quarters.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<header> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/commentary\/\">  Commentary <\/a>  <\/p>\n<h2>Anheuser-Busch Will Hate What Supreme Court Justice Alito Did Amid Bud Light Boycott<\/h2>\n<p> <span> <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/author\/schang\/\">  <\/a> <\/p>\n<p> <span>   By <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/author\/schang\/%20\"><span>Samantha Chang<\/span><\/a> <\/span> <span>   May 21, 2024 at 6:38am <\/span> <\/span>  <\/header>\n<section>\n<p>Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito joined the legion of savvy investors who dumped their Anheuser-Busch InBev stock when sales of the beer giant\u2019s Bud Light brand tanked after it partnered with transgender activist Dylan Mulvaney last spring.<\/p>\n<p>Alito sold between $1,000 and $15,000 of AB InBev shares on Aug. 14, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2024\/05\/20\/supreme-court-alito-sold-bud-light-stock-bought-coors-boycott.html#:~:text=Politics-,Supreme%20Court%20Justice%20Alito%20sold%20Bud%20Light,then%20bought%20Coors%20during%20boycott&#038;text=Supreme%20Court%20Justice%20Samuel%20Alito,a%20transgender%20social%20media%20influencer.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CNBC<\/a> reported Monday, citing a financial disclosure filing.<\/p>\n<p>On the same day, the justice purchased the same amount of stock in rival Molson Coors, according to the filing.<\/p>\n<p>At the time of Alito\u2019s stock sale, Anheuser-Busch InBev was embroiled in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/bud-light-keeps-losing-even-worse-dropping-1-spot\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">nationwide boycott<\/a> by consumers who were turned off by its harebrained decision to promote its Bud Light brand by celebrating Mulvaney\u2019s \u201c365 Days of Girlhood,\u201d a video series about his \u201ctransition.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It sent him a can of Bud Light with his face on it, which Mulvaney proudly displayed in an April 1, 2023, social media post.<\/p>\n<blockquote data-instgrm-captioned data-instgrm-permalink=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/reel\/CqgTftujqZc\/?utm_source=ig_embed&#038;utm_campaign=loading\" data-instgrm-version=\"14\"><\/blockquote>\n<p>Before the Mulvaney debacle, Bud Light had been the top-selling beer in the United States for 20 years.<\/p>\n<p>The fallout of this disastrous partnership was quick and catastrophic.<\/p>\n<div id=\"firefly-poll-container\">\n<p>Will you ever drink a Bud Light again?<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Within a month of his post, two Bud Light marketing executives were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/second-bud-light-exec-put-leave-aftermath-company-going-woke-report\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">placed on leave<\/a> amid a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/nyt-reveals-how-desperate-bud-light-really-is-will-it-ever-recover\/\" title=\"NYT exposes Bud Light's desperation - Can it bounce back?\">crushing conservative boycott<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In July, Anheuser-Busch <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/bud-light-parent-company-axes-hundreds-marketing-corporate-employees-self-inflicted-woes-continue\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">laid off hundreds<\/a> of employees following a devastating sales plunge.<\/p>\n<p>By August, AB InBev stock had experienced a consistent <a href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/quote\/BUD\/history\/?period1=1680048000&#038;period2=1692316800\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">drop in value<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Given this development, it\u2019s understandable that Alito joined the scores of investors who also dumped their shares in the Belgian beverage conglomerate.<\/p>\n<p>Fast-forward eight months, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/kamala-harris-condemns-d-c-demonstrators-despite-past-encouragement-of-violent-blm-mobs\/\" title=\"Kamala Harris condemns D.C. demonstrators despite past encouragement of violent BLM mobs\">left-wing activists<\/a> are accusing the justice of violating judicial ethics aimed at preventing the appearance of partisan bias.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Alito also sold his Anheuser- Busch stock when the Bud Light idiocy was happening. He needs to be removed from SCOTUS. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/FCvoERaEpY\">https:\/\/t.co\/FCvoERaEpY<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Kevin (@KVP798) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/KVP798\/status\/1792598029943336961?\">May 20, 2024<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Read \u201cSamuel Alito Sold Anheuser-Busch Stock During Right-Wing Boycott: Report\u2019 on SmartNews: He needs to be removed voluntarily or involuntarily asap! <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/sujT07y9BY\">https:\/\/t.co\/sujT07y9BY<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 John Shea (@JohnShea122Bost) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JohnShea122Bost\/status\/1792438297639174619?\">May 20, 2024<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Canon 5 of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uscourts.gov\/judges-judgeships\/code-conduct-united-states-judges#f\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Code of Conduct for U.S. Judges<\/a> states that they should \u201crefrain from political activity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gabe Roth, the executive director of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.influencewatch.org\/non-profit\/fix-the-court\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fix the Court<\/a> \u2014 a liberal judicial activist group \u2014 claims Alito made a political statement with his stock sale.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI believe Supreme Court justices should refrain from making political statements \u2014 even oblique ones or even ones their wife or broker may have made on their property or in their brokerage accounts, respectively,\u201d he said in an email to CNBC.<\/p>\n<p>Roth, who does not have a law degree, added, \u201cIf the sale was in response to the Bud Light controversy last year, [Alito] might have an appearance-of-bias problem when it comes to future court cases related to trans rights.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>However, he conceded that neither AB InBev nor Molson Coors has any pending business before the Supreme Court.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, four attorneys who are legal-ethics experts told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/news\/justice-alito-well-within-his-rights-to-sell-cratering-bud-light-stock-legal-ethics-experts-say\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">National Review<\/a> they see no issue and Alito was well within his rights to sell his cratering stock.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAbsent more, this is a non-story,\u201d Hofstra law professor James Sample told the outlet.<\/p>\n<p>Cornell Law School professor Bradley Wendel noted that Alito never even publicized his stock transaction, so it wasn\u2019t as if he was trying to make a political statement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf Justice Alito had made a big public show of selling his A-B stock, that would be one thing, but we actually don\u2019t know anything about his motives for doing so,\u201d Wendel said.<\/p>\n<p>Susan Koniak, a professor emeritus at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/biden-document-mother-lode-discovered-boston-national-archives-reveals\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Boston<\/a> University Law School, drew the same conclusion.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI do not see the sale of this stock some months into the boycott, nor the buying of Coors stock later, as a problem in and of itself,\u201d she told the outlet.<\/p>\n<p>Even <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/liberals-smearing-alito-upside-flag-story-real-point\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Alito<\/a> critic Charles Geyh, a professor at Indiana University Bloomington Maurer School of Law, said the justice did nothing wrong.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[T]here is nothing problematic about a justice selling his stock in a company because it is losing its share value,\u201d Geyh said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf he made a speech in which he disparaged trans people or opined that such people were undeserving of equal rights, we\u2019d be having a different conversation,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut to draw negative inferences about the justice\u2019s impartiality from the mere fact that he sold stock in a company when it was under fire is too attenuated a connection to warrant concern.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Geyh, a <a href=\"https:\/\/law.indiana.edu\/about\/people\/details\/geyh-charles-gardner.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">former counsel<\/a> to the House Judiciary Committee, concluded, \u201cI have been critical of Justice Alito\u2019s conduct on occasions in the past, but this one does not give me heartburn.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>What gives many Americans \u201cheartburn\u201d is the avalanche of inane, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/fact-check-biden-claimed-inflation-9-entered-office-truth-paints-much-different-story\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">manufactured accusations<\/a> that left-wing fabulists concoct against conservatives.
