The situation prompts discussions on the impact of Biden&#8217;s \u200ccandidacy on\u200b the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/are-covid-case-surges-more-fake-news\/\" title=\"Are COVID Case Surges More Fake News?\">upcoming election<\/a>.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/joe-biden\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Joe Biden<\/a> is trailing, and liberal pundits are increasingly saying he has mainly himself to blame.<\/p>\n<p>The <em>New York Times\u2019s<\/em> Ezra Klein <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/opinion\/columnist\/2024\/05\/17\/trump-wins-biden-swing-state-polls\/73683544007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>unfurled seven theories <\/a>for why Biden is losing to former President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/donald-trump\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Donald Trump<\/a>. \u201cThe electorate hasn\u2019t turned on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/democrats\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Democrats<\/a>; a crucial group of voters has turned on Biden,\u201d he writes.<\/p>\n<p>Biden is losing to Trump in states where Democratic Senate candidates are still ahead.\u00a0\u201cThe point here is that Democrats have a Joe Biden problem, not a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/panic-or-patience-the-democrats-dilemma-as-biden-stumbles-out-of-the-gate\/\" title=\"Democrats face a tough choice: Panic or patience amidst Biden's early setbacks\">partywide problem<\/a>,\u201d <em>New York <\/em>magazine\u2019s Jonathan Chait <a href=\"https:\/\/www.msn.com\/en-us\/news\/opinion\/no-your-pet-issue-is-not-making-biden-lose\/ar-BB1mjFGW?ocid=BingNewsSerp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>writes<\/a>. \u201cRegular, mainstream Democratic candidates are holding up just fine in the purple states.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s why the Democrats in those races are in some cases running away from Biden. \u201cIf you go out there and do a focus group, the focus groups all say, \u2018He\u2019s 200 years old. You got to be kidding me.\u2019 And the worst part about it is for unaffiliated voters or people that haven\u2019t made up their mind, they look at this and say: \u2018You have to be kidding us. These are our choices?\u2019 And they indict us for not taking it seriously,\u201d the<em> Hill <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/campaign\/4671279-alarmed-democrats-flee-bidens-ailing-brand-in-battleground-states\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>quoted<\/a> an unnamed Democratic senator as saying. <\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/election-2024\/?utm_source=homepage&#038;utm_medium=banner&#038;utm_campaign=iowa_caucus&#038;utm_id=election2024\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ELECTION 2024: FOLLOW LATEST COVERAGE<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ll see how much gravity we can defy,\u201d the senator said of Democrats running ahead of Biden in the battleground states, implying Biden could have reverse coattails.<\/p>\n<p>Jeremy Mayer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/opinion\/2024\/05\/20\/biden-trump-polls-2024-election\/73702186007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>pleaded<\/a> in a <em>USA Today <\/em>op-ed for Biden to drop out. \u201cHe sincerely and accurately believed that he was the Democrat with the best chance to beat Trump [in 2020],\u201d Mayer writes of Biden. \u201cNow, he is one of the few national Democrats who could get Trump reelected.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMr. President, you\u2019re one of the few Americans old enough to remember when conventions were fascinating and powerful,\u201d he continued. \u201cThey\u2019ve become predictable and almost pointless. Why not pull a surprise on the Republicans, and let the convention pick the nominee for the first time in decades?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Think of the ratings, Mr. President!<\/p>\n<p>Political consultant Douglas MacKinnon is a Republican, but he <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/opinion\/campaign\/4671526-democrats-can-still-jettison-biden-as-an-august-surprise\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>doesn\u2019t think<\/a> Democrats should give Biden the option. \u201cAgain, every single Democrat I speak with wishes they had someone other than Biden or Vice President Kamala Harris as their nominee come November,\u201d he writes. \u201cBe that someone California Gov. Gavin Newsom, Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker or Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf Democrats were to nominate Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro, he\u2019d beat Trump like LeBron James posting up Kevin Hart,\u201d Mayer writes. \u201cThere are many others, including Gov. Gretchen Whitmer of Michigan, Sen. Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota and Sen. Cory Booker of New Jersey.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is still a very viable escape hatch come the convention in August should the Democrats choose to use it. An escape hatch that would allow them to switch out Biden for Newsom or another candidate,\u201d MacKinnon continues. \u201cUntil that hatch is welded closed, I believe it will remain a realistic option. An option desired by countless Democratic voters across the nation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This is also what many Republicans most fear \u2014 having nominated Trump, the Democrats switch out Biden for someone younger and with more plausible deniability about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/inflation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>inflation<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/border-crisis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>the border<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Trump\u2019s lead is too small, and Biden and Harris are both too unlikely to cooperate with this scenario, for this to come to pass. Biden has so far swept the Democratic primaries, winning by landslide margins even when \u201cuncommitted,\u201d his only real opponent, gets a nontrivial share of the vote. It wouldn\u2019t look very small-d democratic to replace him with someone who didn\u2019t bother to run in the first place.<\/p>\n<p>But it is a trend in elite Democratic and liberal opinion that should worry the Biden camp. If this is what people are willing to contemplate with Trump ahead by 1.1 points nationally in the <em>RealClearPolitics <\/em>polling average, what happens if the Democrats lose ground? Or if Trump gets a mistrial, or even an acquittal bounce, should he not be convicted in the New York hush money trial?<\/p>\n<p>The Biden campaign would like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/campaigns\/presidential\/3002570\/panic-patience-democrats-biden-dilemma\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Democrats to be patient<\/a>. Trump\u2019s polling lead isn\u2019t that big. The polls arguably understated Democratic support in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/midterms-2022\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>midterm elections<\/a> and some special elections. Team Biden believes it has the better ground game.
