The research focused on the impact of edible cannabis legalization on \u200bemergency department visits for \u200dcannabis poisoning in older adults in Ontario. The study highlighted a \u2063threefold increase in\u2064 senior citizens visiting emergency rooms for cannabis-related issues post-edible cannabis legalization in 2020.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>The push to legalize <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/marijuana\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>cannabis<\/a> has led to a significant increase in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/poison\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>poisonings<\/a> and visits to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/democrats-would-rather-kids-die-than-stand-up-to-teachers-unions\/\" title=\"Democrats Would Rather Kids Die Than Stand Up To Teachers Unions\">hospital emergency rooms<\/a>, a newly-released Canadian study <a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamainternalmedicine\/fullarticle\/2818635\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>revealed<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers analyzed\u00a0\u201cthe association between edible cannabis legalization and emergency department (ED) visits for cannabis poisoning\u201d in adults in Ontario, Canada, who were 65 years old and older. The study found that the number of senior citizens who visited emergency departments in hospitals due to cannabis poisoning tripled after Canada legalized edible cannabis. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a bit of an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/bidenomics-12-of-retired-americans-plan-return-to-work-in-2024-citing-rising-costs-survey-shows\/\" title=\"Survey: 12% of Retired Americans to Rejoin Workforce in 2024 Due to High Costs\">age-related bias<\/a> that many health care practitioners, and frankly society, hold that older adults are not using drugs. And that\u2019s not true,\u201d Dr. Nathan Stall, one of the study\u2019s authors. \u201cWe found that the largest increases in emergency department visits for cannabis poisoning among seniors occurred after edible cannabis became legal for retail sale in January 2020.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Canada first legalized the sale of \u201cdried cannabis flowers\u201d for recreational use in October 2018. A little over a year later, in January 2020, the country legalized the sale of edible cannabis. Over a nearly eight-year period, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/amp.cnn.com\/cnn\/2024\/05\/20\/health\/cannabis-edibles-poisoning-older-adults-wellness\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">researchers studied the rates of emergency department visits<\/a> tracked by the Ontario Ministry of Health to monitor the rates of senior citizens who visited emergency departments for cannabis poisoning before legalization and after legalization. <\/p>\n<p>The pre-legalization period was between January 2015 and September 2018. The post-legalization period was divided into two separate time frames. The first period was between October 2018 and December 2019, when Canada legalized only \u201cdried cannabis flower.\u201d The second was between January 2020 and December 2022, after Canada legalized cannabis edibles. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile the design of our study limited us from determining whether poisonings were unintentional or intentional, we suspect both contributed to the harms we observed,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medpagetoday.com\/geriatrics\/generalgeriatrics\/110234#:~:text=Over%208%20years%2C%202%2C322%20ED,%2C%20and%206.5%25%20had%20dementia.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Stall said in <\/a><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.medpagetoday.com\/geriatrics\/generalgeriatrics\/110234#:~:text=Over%208%20years%2C%202%2C322%20ED,%2C%20and%206.5%25%20had%20dementia.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">MedPage Today<\/a><\/em>. \u201cOlder adults are prone to unintentional poisonings because <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/california-third-graders-hospitalized-after-eating-cannabis-candy-at-school\/\" title=\"California Third-Graders Hospitalized After Eating Cannabis Candy At School\">edible cannabis products<\/a> are visually attractive and palatable and may be taken in error, being easily confused with non-cannabis food items.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>CLICK HERE TO READ MORE FROM THE WASHINGTON EXAMINER<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The study\u2019s authors emphasized\u00a0that their findings corresponded to \u201cnational US data showing that edible cannabis accounts for an increasing proportion of cannabis poisoning in older adults.\u201d \u00a0Additionally, they warned of the \u201cconsequences associated with edible cannabis\u201d and stressed the importance for areas that have legalized cannabis to \u201cconsider measures to mitigate unintentional exposure in older adults and age-specific dosing guidance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Two doctors not affiliated with the research warned that the discoveries represented a \u201ccautionary tale of legalization of substances.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis study provides a cautionary tale of legalization of substances without adequate research, education, and counseling of users regarding adverse effects and safe usage, particularly in older adults,\u201d Dr. Lona Mody and Dr. Sharon K.
