The controversy highlights concerns about current \u200bdiscrimination practices in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/up-for-debate-trump-desantis-and-2024-gop-hopefuls-stances-on-education\/\" title=\"Debating Trump, DeSantis, and GOP's education views in 2024.\">higher\u200c education institutions<\/a>.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/higher-education\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Massachusetts Institute of Technology<\/a> was hit with a civil rights complaint on Monday, with the complainant noting one of its programs only allows \u201cwomen of color\u201d to participate.<\/p>\n<p>The complaint, filed by the Equal Protection Project with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/department-of-education\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Department of Education\u2019s Office for Civil Rights<\/a>, focused on the Creative Regal Women of Knowledge, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/dei\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>racial minority and women\u2019s only program<\/a> at MIT. However, the program also considers biological men who identify as women eligible, according to its website.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnfortunately, many colleges and universities have bought into the \u2018anti-racist\u2019 activism claim that the remedy for past discrimination is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/gov-youngkin-rescinds-crt-inspired-programs\/\" title=\"Gov. Youngkin Rescinds CRT-Inspired Programs\">current discrimination<\/a>,\u201d William A. Jacobson, founder of the Equal Protection Project, said. \u201cSuch \u2018reverse-racism\u2019 and \u2018reverse-sexism\u2019 is just racism and sexism, and it is not the answer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe CRWN eligibility requirements are openly racially and sexually discriminatory,\u201d Jacobson continued.<\/p>\n<p>On its website, the CRWN <a href=\"https:\/\/ome.mit.edu\/thecrwn\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>says<\/a> it is designed exclusively for \u201cwomen of color (WOC)\u201d to \u201cmove confidently as visionaries, grounded in excellence, empathy, and support for one another.\u201d It clarifies that \u201cwomen of color\u201d only means black, indigenous, Hispanic or \u201cLatinx,\u201d Asian, Pacific Islanders, and other \u201cminoritized ethnicities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Some stated purposes of the group are to \u201cenhance and strengthen community amongst WOC\u201d and \u201csupport positive racial\/ethnic, cultural, gender identity, self-awareness, confidence.\u201d Participants are eligible for up to $400 for professional development.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe harm from racial educational barriers is that it racializes not just the specific program, but the entire campus,\u201d Jacobson said. \u201cSending a message to students that access to opportunities is dependent on race is damaging to the fabric of campus.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In response to a request for comment from MIT, Abby Abazorius, school\u00a0senior media relations specialist, said, \u201cMIT does not, as a practice, comment on legal matters.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The complaint cited August 2023 guidance from the Office of Civil Rights, stating, \u201cIn determining whether an opportunity to participate is open to all students, OCR may consider, for example, whether advertisements or other communications would lead a reasonable student, or a parent or guardian, to understand that all students are welcome to participate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CLICK HERE TO READ MORE FROM THE WASHINGTON EXAMINER<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Pointing to its stated purposes and requirements for participation as well as its application, which asks prospective participants extensively which racial, ethnic, or gender groups they identify with, the complaint stated, \u201cAny reasonable person would understand that all students are not welcome to participate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Equal Protection Project says the program violates Title VI and Title IX of the Civil Rights Act.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Massachusetts Institute of Technology faces a civil rights complaint for allegedly restricting participation in the Creative Regal Women of Knowledge program to &#8220;women of color.&#8221;
