Israeli tactics, global \u2062apprehensions, and the risk of \u2062civilian harm and political implications are crucial factors shaping the \u2062conflict in Gaza.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonexamniner.com\/tag\/israel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Israel<\/a>\u2018s military has returned to northern <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/gaza\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Gaza<\/a> to take on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonexamner.com\/tag\/hamas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Hamas<\/a> several months after claiming to have dismantled the group in the area.<\/p>\n<p>Israeli military spokesman, Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari, said on Jan. 8, the army has \u201ccompleted the dismantling of Hamas\u2019s military framework\u00a0in the northern Gaza Strip,\u201d and yet he told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.barrons.com\/news\/israel-army-reports-perhaps-the-fiercest-fighting-in-gaza-s-jabalia-since-october-d5cef96d\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>AFP<\/a> on Friday, \u201cHamas was in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/mitch-mcconnells-betrayal-hurts-the-nation-goodwin\/\" title=\"Mitch McConnell\u2019s betrayal hurts the nation\">complete control<\/a> here in Jabalia until we arrived a few days ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His comments, roughly five months apart, highlight the complex and difficult realities of achieving Israeli leaders\u2019 goals of destroying Hamas militarily and removing them from their governing position.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe combat teams of the 7th and 460th Parachute Brigades under the 98th Division expanded during the day the fighting spaces in Jabalia and deepened the operational control of the area,\u201d The IDF said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/social-media\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>on X<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Israeli troops started their military operations in northern Gaza and have progressively moved south in a sweep of the enclave. But, they have not occupied the area they\u2019ve swept, instead leaving those areas effectively ungoverned, allowing for Hamas to attempt to reconstitute.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m a little surprised though, in terms of the IDF\u2019s operations, that they\u2019ve allowed Hamas to return to areas the military already cleared,\u201d former U.S. Secretary of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/Defense\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Defense<\/a> Mark Esper told the <em>Washington Examiner<\/em>. \u201cI\u2019m not sure why they\u2019re doing that.\u00a0I don\u2019t know if it\u2019s a manpower issue or what.\u201c<\/p>\n<p>This isn\u2019t the first time Israeli forces have had to go back to a location in Gaza that it had previously operated in and vacated, though it highlights Hamas\u2019s level of involvement permeating throughout the enclave. It has also raised questions about whether Israel is planning enough for what will happen in Gaza once the war is over.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe key to this goal is military action,\u00a0and the establishment of a governing alternative in Gaza,\u201d \u00a0Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant said Wednesday. \u201cIn the absence of such an alternative, only two negative options remain: Hamas\u2019s rule in Gaza or Israeli military rule in Gaza. The meaning of indecision is choosing one of the negative options. It would erode our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/military\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>military<\/a> achievements, lessen the pressure on Hamas, and sabotage the chances of achieving a framework for the release of hostages.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gallant argued, \u201cThe \u2018day after Hamas\u2019 will only be achieved with Palestinian entities taking control of Gaza,\u00a0accompanied by international actors,\u00a0establishing a governing alternative to Hamas\u2019s rule,\u201d though other politicians, like ultranationalist National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir, called for Israel to conquer the Gaza Strip and claim it as part of \u201cthe Holy Land\u201d of the State of Israel.<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. and several other entities have warned Israel against the forced displacement of the Palestinian people from Gaza.<\/p>\n<p>Israeli Prime Minister <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/benjamin-netanyahu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Benjamin Netanyahu<\/a> has not shared many details about the Israeli government\u2019s plans for \u201cthe day after\u201d the war completes, but he has repeatedly said Israel will likely <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/israel-will-keep-security-control-in-gaza-indefinitely-after-war-ends-says-netanyahu\/\" title=\"Netanyahu: Israel to maintain security control in Gaza indefinitely after war.\">maintain security control<\/a> over the enclave. Forces have, however, begun fortifying a strategic corridor that splits Gaza in two, including building bases and taking over civilian structures, according to the <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/2024\/05\/17\/gaza-israel-netzarim-corridor-war-hamas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Washington Post<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>As Israeli forces returned to northern Gaza, they continued their limited operations in the southern Gaza city of Rafah. (AP Photo\/Fatima Shbair)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>World leaders, including President Joe Biden, have expressed grave concerns about the possibility that a full-scale invasion of Rafah could result in the deaths of countless civilians.<\/p>\n<p>Biden <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/05\/08\/politics\/joe-biden-interview-cnntv\/index.html#:~:text=President%20Joe%20Biden%20said%20for,of%20the%20city%20of%20Rafah.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"threatened to withhold future offensive military aid\">threatened to withhold future offensive military aid<\/a> sales if Israel invaded Rafah, while Israel has carried out limited operations so far as Israeli leaders have repeatedly stated their intention to carry out an invasion.<\/p>\n<p>Israel seems \u201cto be positioning forces to\u201d invade Rafah, Esper said, adding that it is, \u201calso likely a negotiating tactic to put pressure on Hamas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. instead believes Israel should rely on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/eyes-turn-to-iran-as-israel-responds-to-hamas-terror-attacks\/\" title=\"Israel retaliates against Hamas terror attacks, focus shifts to Iran.\">precise military operations<\/a> to take out Hamas leaders in Rafah, though Esper does not believe that is a feasible strategy given Hamas\u2019s capabilities.<\/p>\n<p>The administration \u201chas talked about Israel relying on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/special-forces-structure-budget-need-revamping-to-counter-china-russia-experts-testify\/\" title=\"Experts testify that the Special Forces structure and budget require revamping to counter China and Russia.\">special forces operations<\/a> when it comes to Rafah, where you enter the city in a limited fashion to capture or kill militants,\u201d he said. \u201cI just think that\u2019s very difficult and dangerous to do.\u00a0 Hamas has four organized battalions in Rafah.\u00a0The only way you can dismantle them is to go in force-on-force at the tactical level.\u00a0 I think you have to go block by block, building by building, because you not only want to destroy the militant units, you also want to make sure you uncover as many of the tunnels as possible, and that means checking every block and building.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.washngtonexaminer.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>CLICK HERE TO READ MORE FROM THE WASHINGTON EXAMINER<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Biden\u2019s administration paused one aid package earlier this month, which included 1,800 2,000-lb bombs and 1,700 500-lb bombs, according to Maj. Gen. Patrick Ryder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think the mistake in holding up the sale of 2,000 lb bombs is less about the capability it denies the IDF in the short term, and more about the signal it sends to Israel\u2019s adversaries. What it tells Hamas is that the divide between Tel Aviv and Washington is growing, and they should just continue to wait out the negotiations because the situation\u00a0continues to get better for them,\u201d the former secretary added.<\/p>\n<p>The current death toll is impossible to verify.
