Despite concerns over defense and energy policies, \u2064observers expect continuity in\u200b foreign relations with the U.S.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p><strong>TAIPEI, Taiwan \u2014<\/strong> New <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/taiwan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Taiwanese<\/a> President Lai Ching-te promised to provide stability for Taiwan and the Indo-Pacific during his inaugural address, despite <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/china\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"China\">China<\/a>\u2018s desire to unify the island with the mainland.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDemocracy and freedom are Taiwan\u2019s unwavering commitment,\u201d Lai said, through a translator, during his inaugural address on Monday. \u201cPeace is the only option. And prosperity gained through lasting peace and stability is our objective.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lai called on China to stop its political and military intimidation against Taiwan, to maintain peace in the Taiwan Strait, and \u201censure that the world is free from the fear of war.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe must not harbor any delusions, so long as China refuses to renounce the use of force against Taiwan, all of us in Taiwan ought to understand that even if we accept the entirety of China\u2019s position and give up our sovereignty, China\u2019s ambition to annex Taiwan will not simply disappear,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n<p>Lai said Taiwanese must to work together to safeguard the nation. \u201cAll our political parties ought to oppose annexation, and protect sovereignty,\u201d he told the celebratory crowd. \u201cAnd no one should entertain the idea of giving up our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/it-would-be-an-irreparable-disaster-if-joe-biden-were-designated-president-of-the-united-states-archbishop-carlo-maria-vigano-warns-believers-in-latest-interview\/\" title=\"\u201cIt Would Be an Irreparable Disaster if Joe Biden \u2013 Were Designated President of the United States\u201d \u2013 Archbishop Carlo Maria Vigano Warns Believers in Latest Interview with Steve Bannon\">national sovereignty<\/a> in exchange for political power.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At a pre-inauguration reception, Lai told dignitaries and reporters, including the <em>Washington Examiner<\/em>, that he hoped to \u201cbuild upon the solid foundation\u201d created by his predecessor, former President Tsai Ing-wen, under whom he served as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/hunter-biden-defector-emails-pipeline-to-obama-admin-seen-as-currency\/\" title=\"Hunter Biden Defector Emails: 'Pipeline' to Obama Admin Seen as 'Currency'\">vice president<\/a> for the last eight years. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cTogether, we will continue to work on the path of democracy and we will continue to engage with the world to make Taiwan stronger,\u201d Lai said through translators Sunday. \u201cWe will continue to defend Taiwan\u2019s democracy. We will continue to make Taiwan\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/economy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>economy<\/a> more prosperous and vibrant democracy. In addition, we will also play a key role and become a key force in maintaining stability in the region.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That is despite a lack of clarity regarding Lai\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/defense\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>defense policy<\/a> and differences between Tsai and his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/energy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>energy policies<\/a> related to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/nuclear-power\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>nuclear power<\/a>. There are also concerns in capitals, such as Washington, D.C., with respect to Lai\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/section\/policy\/foreign-policy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>foreign policy<\/a> experience and past missteps. So basically, maintaining the status quo, meaning that the two sides of the Taiwan Strait are not subordinate to each other.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Raymond Kuo, the director of the\u00a0RAND\u00a0Corporation\u2019s Taiwan Policy Initiative,\u00a0agreed Lai would at least seek continuity in foreign policy, considering Tsai\u2019s approach to China \u2014 a policy of supporting the status quo, including preserving Taiwan\u2019s sovereignty, and pursuing a closer relationship with the U.S. \u2014 is \u201cresponsible and effective.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo much so that all three presidential candidates essentially pledged to follow her lead during the election campaign,\u201d Kuo told the <em>Washington Examiner<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Tsai and Lai\u2019s closeness with the U.S. has caused consternations for China, who had been expected to react diplomatically or militarily to Lai\u2019s inauguration.<\/p>\n<p>While the U.S. was preoccupied with the 2024 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/republican-primary\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Republican presidential<\/a> primary <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/iowa-caucuses\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">caucuses in Iowa<\/a>, Lai won Taiwan\u2019s presidential election in January by 7 percentage points, or 915,000 votes. Lai retained the presidency for Taiwan\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/justin-trudeau-falling-behind-in-canadian-election-polls\/\" title=\"Justin Trudeau falling behind in Canadian election polls\">center-left party<\/a>, the Democratic Progressive Party, over the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/taiwan-prepares-to-inaugurate-new-biden-esque-president\/\" title=\"Taiwan readies for the inauguration of new President, Biden-style\">historically powerful center-<\/a>right to right-wing party, the Kuomintang, the first time that a Taiwanese party won more than two <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/mcconnell-shreds-controversial-bill-democrats-trying-to-pass-even-the-left-wing-aclu-opposes-this-bill\/\" title=\"McConnell Shreds Controversial Bill Democrats Trying To Pass: \u2018Even The Left-Wing ACLU Opposes This Bill\u2019\">consecutive presidential elections<\/a> since direct elections were introduced in 1996.<\/p>\n<p>But Lai did not win a majority of the vote nor did the DPP gain outright control of Taiwan\u2019s unicameral legislature in the relatively young democracy. The DPP has 51 seats in Taiwan\u2019s Legislative Yuan to the Kuomintang\u2019s 52, with two additional independent legislators caucusing with the latter. The new Taiwan People\u2019s Party, which outperformed expectations because of protest votes against the two majority parties, has eight seats.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/washingtonexaminer.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>CLICK HERE TO READ MORE FROM THE WASHINGTON EXAMINER<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>  As such, National Cheng Kung University political science professor Hung-Jen Wang asserted Lai\u2019s priority will be to respond to Taiwan\u2019s domestic political and economic concerns, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/inflation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>cost of living<\/a> pressures and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/housing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>housing shortages<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cParticularly, they will aim to build the greatest possible consensus on the new domestic policies they intend to implement, ensuring that the public feels the government is addressing their needs,\u201d Wang told the <em>Washington Examiner.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Taiwan&#8217;s new President Lai Ching-te pledged stability for Taiwan and the Indo-Pacific despite China&#8217;s push for reunification.
