She said she is trying different medications and supplements recommended by the vet to help manage his symptoms.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[Doggy dementia] definitely tests your patience,\u201d Kulsrud\u00a0said to\u00a0Newsweek. \u201cBut then you look at them and know he is obviously aging and going through something. Me doing anything or raising my voice is not going to help.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The video clip struck a chord in many hearts, getting nearly 10 million views, over 788,500 likes, and 22,500 comments from viewers who were either going through a similar situation or were just moved by Kulsrud\u2019s patience and kindness.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy baby has dog dementia also. She is about to be 16. I haven\u2019t heard her bark in over a year,\u201d one commenter wrote.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis breaks my heart for him. I know that he is safe and healthy. Thank you for loving him so much,\u201d another comment said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThank you for loving this baby and NOT GIVING UP,\u201d one more comment read.<\/p>\n<p>According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.akc.org\/expert-advice\/health\/dog-dementia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">American Kennel Club,<\/a> doggy dementia, technically called Cognitive Dysfunction Syndrome (CDS) in dogs, impacts a dog\u2019s behavior, memory, and ability to perceive their surroundings.<\/p>\n<p>It is similar to Alzheimer\u2019s in humans, caused by the \u201d oxidative damage in the brain cells,\u201d according to a veterinary behaviorist cited by the AKC.<\/p>\n<p>Some of the symptoms of CDS are disorientation, changes in behavior and activity levels, changes in sleep cycles and house soiling.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSundowner Syndrome,\u201d the symptom Mehkia is shown experiencing, is a change in the dog\u2019s sleep cycle, where they sleep more during the day and then get agitated and restless at night.<\/p>\n<p>Caring for a dog with dementia can be extremely challenging and heartbreaking as once-learned behaviors fade and personalities change.<\/p>\n<p>But by working closely with their vet and incorporating mental enrichment, many owners\u00a0are able to\u00a0provide a good quality of life for their canine companions in their twilight years.<\/p>\n<p>Although the responses to Kulsrud\u2019s video were largely positive, there were apparently some heartless commenters who suggested she could just put him down.<\/p>\n<p>But Kulsrud wasn\u2019t having it.<\/p>\n<p>She updated her captions, writing, \u201cSince Tiktok wont [let] me comment on the post anymore\u2026so many people have said to just put him down. Oh and I\u2019m deleting comments about putting him down because I\u2019ve addressed it already.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We live in a self-centered world, and it\u2019s hard to find people willing to deal with the ravages of dementia in adult family members, let alone dogs.<\/p>\n<p>But those who still open themselves to love find it in many different forms.<\/p>\n<p>And one of the purest forms of love is the love of a beloved dog.<\/p>\n<p>Kulsrud\u2019s actions embody the deep human-animal bond at its very best.<\/p>\n<p>The overwhelming support the video received also speaks volumes about how many families have gone through this wrenching experience with their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/lady-gagas-french-bull-dogs-recovered-following-violent-robbery\/\" title=\"Lady Gaga\u2019s French Bull Dogs Recovered Following Violent Robbery\">beloved dogs<\/a>.
