The bill&#8217;s intention aligns with Governor J.B. Pritzker&#8217;s \u200dcommitment \u200dto \u2062safeguarding women&#8217;s fundamental rights. Democratic representatives refrained from commenting on the bill. Various concerns\u200c led to the proposal, \u2064including privacy\u200d issues in locker rooms, inspiring the bill&#8217;s development. David Friess, R-Red Bud, would define terms like \u201cwoman\u201d and \u201cman\u201d and prevent judges and state agencies from redefining the word \u201cwoman\u201d to mean anyone who \u201cidentifies\u201d as a woman. Given Gov. J.B. Pritzker\u2019s recent tweet stating, \u201cI will fight like hell to protect women\u2019s fundamental rights,\u201d the Freedom Caucus is hopeful he will ultimately sign the bill into law. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cEveryone here knows what a woman is,\u201d said Friess. \u201cThis is not a hard issue.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Several Democratic state representatives such as Janet Yang Rohr, D-Naperville, Elizabeth Hernandez, D-Cicero, and Will Guzzardi, D-Chicago, were asked for their thoughts on the bill.\u00a0They all declined to comment. <\/p>\n<p>The bill was inspired by the Independent Women\u2019s Bill of Rights and Abbigail Wheeler of Springfield, who <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecentersquare.com\/illinois\/article_e00d95b2-21c2-11ee-929a-c7f31be4f3b1.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a><\/strong> she was banned from her local YMCA swim team for speaking out against a biological male in the women\u2019s locker room. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI shared my experience where I encountered men changing in the women\u2019s locker room at the local YMCA. I expressed my discomfort and fear of both my teammates and I told the YMCA and my <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/graham-enhancing-the-aura-of-antifa\/\" title=\"GRAHAM: Enhancing The Aura Of Antifa\">swim coach<\/a>. I was dismissed and shunned for my concerns,\u201d Wheeler said Friday during a news conference outside the Illinois State Capitol. \u201cI was laughed at by my coach and I was made to feel my discomfort was wrong and that I should just be quiet. Why should we surrender our right to privacy in our own locker rooms? It became clear to me what was happening was fundamentally unjust. By allowing this, it creates an environment where any man can freely enter a woman\u2019s locker room, changing spaces and do whatever perverted action he pleases.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Illinois state Rep. Adam Niemerg, R-Dieterich, and\u00a0Independent Women\u2019s Voice ambassador Coach Kim Russell during a news conference in Springfield Friday.\u00a0BlueRoomStream<\/p>\n<p>Illinois laws use the words \u201cwoman,\u201d \u201cman,\u201d \u201cmale,\u201d and \u201cfemale\u201d at least 997 times.<\/p>\n<p>Legislators are also calling for the state to not support teen drag shows.<\/p>\n<p>The Illinois Department of Children and Family Services is a \u201cHarvey Milk\u201d sponsor of Springfield\u2019s Pridefest. Republican legislators are calling on them to remove their sponsorship. <\/p>\n<p>Harvey Milk <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/springfieldpride.org\/2024-sponsors\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sponsors<\/a><\/strong> pledge $2,000 for the event that <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/springfieldpride.org\/schedule-of-events\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">features<\/a><\/strong> a \u201cteen drag\u201d show where 10-17 year olds will be provided a bag of supplies that contains \u201ceverything they need to create an impromptu drag costume.\u201d Drag is wearing clothes typically worn by the opposite sex as a form of entertainment. Teens will participate in a costume change and perform on a stage.<\/p>\n<p>State Rep. Adam Niemerg, R-Dieterich, called on state agencies to pull their sponsorships. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re sitting with a $800 million budget deficit and we\u2019ve got state agencies paying for 10-year-olds to be sexually groomed,\u201d said Niemerg. \u201cThese kids need to be protected and we\u2019re calling on every one of those individuals to pull their sponsorships immediately.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Supporters say it\u2019s the parents\u2019 right to sign the children up for drag shows.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cParents do all kinds of things that are inappropriate, but our biggest issue with this event is that the government is sponsoring it,\u201d said Friess. <\/p>\n<p>The Illinois Department of Human Rights also pledged $2,000 to become a sponsor. In a social media post, the department said it is a proud vendor and sponsor of the 2024 Springfield PrideFest. <\/p>\n<p>Independent Women\u2019s Voice ambassador Coach Kim Russell pointed to the media at Friday\u2019s news conference and asked a question. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe you\u2019re a Democrat or liberal \u2026 I ask you, do you want your children to be groomed by sexual predators and if our governmental agencies are paying for that \u2026 I ask you why?\u201d said Russell. <\/p>\n<p>Proponents of the PrideFest say it\u2019s a family-friendly street festival celebrating the LGBT community and equality.
