She runs a Facebook group called \u201cBig Cats in Cumbria\u201d to document sightings and frequently confers with local scientists about the beast.<\/p>\n<p>As Allaby told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/mammals\/big-cat-british-countryside\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Discover Wildlife<\/a>, after testing the DNA, he found it came from a cat in the <em>Panthera <\/em>genus and was most likely a leopard.<\/p>\n<p>Allaby noted that before receiving this sheep carcass, an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/east-palestine-resident-says-town-isnt-fooled-by-bidens-visit-announcement-we-know-what-hes-doing\/\" title=\"East Palestine resident sees through Biden's visit announcement: 'We're not fooled, we know his intentions\">anonymous resident<\/a> sent him a claw, which also came from a creature in the<em> Panthera<\/em> genus.<\/p>\n<p>The academic also spoke to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rhyljournal.co.uk\/news\/24322423.beast-cumbria---big-cat-dna-confirmed-sheep-carcass\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the Rhyl Journal<\/a> to detail his findings. \u201cThe section we have sequenced is distinct to the group <em>Panthera<\/em>, which includes all the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/carole-baskin-getting-her-own-docuseries-to-investigate-joe-exotic-zoo\/\" title=\"Carole Baskin Getting Her Own Docuseries To Investigate Joe Exotic Zoo\">big cats<\/a>: lions, tigers, panthers, leopards,\u201d he described. \u201cThere was only a very small amount of DNA present, which again is not surprising. So we need more data from more samples to pin it down to a specific species.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"firefly-poll-container\">\n<p>Do you believe big cats are roaming England?<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Still, it seems clear that residents had not simply misidentified a fox or another such creature.<\/p>\n<p>Rather, it seems that there was truly a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/house-cat-black-panther-texas-residents-video-goes-viral-viewers-debate-actually-shows\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">black panther<\/a> or some similar creature roaming around the countryside all this time.<\/p>\n<p>Nor was it some kind of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/ap-mexican-president-posts-photo-claims-shows-mythological-creature-appears-believe-picture-totally-real\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">mysterious<\/a>, supernatural creature.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, it was possibly an exotic creature that escaped from a zoo or a menagerie.<\/p>\n<p>Or, as that same Guardian article from 2021 suggested, it could have been released by its owners after the U.K. passed the Dangerous Wild Animals Act in 1976, which regulated the ownership of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/ap-woman-forced-surrender-exotic-pet-living-new-york-city-apartment-glad-not-neighbor\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/disney-adds-trigger-warnings-to-these-classics-now-hidden-from-children-under-seven-years-old\/\" title=\"Disney+ Adds Trigger Warnings To These Classics, Now Hidden From Children Under Seven-Years-Old\">exotic animals<\/a><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>And considering it seems to have been a panther attacking people\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/the-craziest-animal-attacks-to-ever-happen-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">flocks<\/a>, it would be completely plausible that such a stealthy and cunning animal could exist in England\u2019s greenways picking off sheep and other animals for years on end.<\/p>\n<p>That said, it was incredible that the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/escaped-kansas-zoo-animal-went-missing-17-years-ago-shows-texas-coast\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">animal<\/a> avoided any sort of official detection for over two decades.<\/p>\n<p>Humans profess to be wise, and yet, sometimes, we have no idea what\u2019s happening in our own backyards.<\/p>\n<p>There could be a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/child-attacked-big-wild-cat-san-diego\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">panther<\/a> stalking your woods, for all you know, and you could be blissfully unaware of its presence for decades at a time.<\/p>\n<p>Until it decided to maul some of your sheep, anyway.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<div>\n<p><b><i>A Note from Our Deputy Managing Editor:<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p><i><span>I heard a chilling comment the other day: \u201cWe don\u2019t even know if an election will be held in 2024.\u201d <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span>That wasn\u2019t said by a conspiracy theorist or a doomsday prophet.
