This change is vital for the ethical progression\u200b of\u2063 intelligent \u200cmachines.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<header> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/news\/\">  News <\/a>   <span> <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/author\/ap-reports\/\">  <\/a> <\/p>\n<p> <span>   By <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/author\/ap-reports\/%20\"><span>The Associated Press<\/span><\/a> <\/span> <span>   May 17, 2024 at 11:30am <\/span> <\/span>  <\/header>\n<section>\n<p>A former OpenAI leader who resigned from the company this week said Friday that safety has \u201ctaken a backseat to shiny products\u201d at the influential artificial intelligence company.<\/p>\n<p>Jan Leike, who ran OpenAI\u2019s \u201cSuper Alignment\u201d team alongside a company co-founder who also resigned this week, wrote in a series of posts on the social media platform X that he joined the San Francisco-based company because he thought it would be the best place to do <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/taylor-swift-comedy-legend-george-carlins-estate-ramping-war-artificial-intelligence\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">AI research<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHowever, I have been disagreeing with OpenAI leadership about the company\u2019s core priorities for quite some time, until we finally reached a breaking point,\u201d wrote Leike, whose last day was Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>An AI researcher by training, Leike said he believes there should be more focus on preparing for the next generation of AI models, including on things like safety and analyzing the societal impacts of such technologies.<\/p>\n<p>He said building \u201csmarter-than-human machines is an inherently dangerous endeavor\u201d and that the company \u201cis shouldering an enormous responsibility on behalf of all of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/elon-musk-files-suit-ai-giant-argues-tech-no-longer-benefits-humanity\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">humanity<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOpenAI must become a safety-first AGI company,\u201d Leike wrote using the abbreviated version of <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/agi-artificial-general-intelligence-existential-risk-meta-openai-deepmind-science-ff5662a056d3cf3c5889a73e929e5a34\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/heres-how-elon-musk-will-avoid-terminator-scenario-with-his-new-humanoid-robots\/\" title=\"Here\u2019s How Elon Musk Will Avoid \u2018Terminator Scenario\u2019 With His New Humanoid Robots\">artificial general intelligence<\/a><\/a>, a futuristic vision of machines that are as broadly smart as humans or at least can do many things as well as people can.<\/p>\n<p>Leike\u2019s resignation came after OpenAI co-founder and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/advertisers-looking-to-use-cgi-to-put-product-ads-in-classic-films\/\" title=\"Advertisers Looking To Use CGI To Put Product Ads In Classic Films\">chief scientist<\/a> Ilya Sutskever said Tuesday that he was leaving the company after nearly a decade.<\/p>\n<p>Sutskever was one of four board members last fall who voted to push out CEO Sam Altman \u2014 only to quickly reinstate him.<\/p>\n<p>It was Sutskever who told Altman last November that he was being fired, but he later said he regretted doing so.<\/p>\n<div id=\"firefly-poll-container\">\n<p>Will AI become more of a problem than a help?<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Sutskever said he is working on a new project that\u2019s meaningful to him without offering additional details.
