Douglas Golden<\/span><\/a> <\/span> <span>   May 17, 2024 at 6:51am <\/span> <\/span>  <\/header>\n<section>\n<p>Well, you can\u2019t say that public affairs can\u2019t command voters\u2019 attention \u2014 provided, of course, politicians promise a no-holds-barred verbal fray as part of the deal.<\/p>\n<p>Viral footage from a House Oversight Committee hearing on a contempt of Congress resolution against Attorney General Merrick Garland Thursday evening shows Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia and Democrat Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York and Jasmine Crockett of Texas trading verbal barbs about their looks and intelligence.<\/p>\n<p>The hearing was ostensibly supposed to be about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/ag-merrick-garland-announces-end-biden-classified-documents-investigation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Garland\u2019s<\/a> refusal to turn over recordings of President Joe Biden\u2019s series of 2023 interviews with Special Counsel Robert Hur.<\/p>\n<p>However, Greene used the hearing to ask whether \u201cany of the Democrats on this committee are employing Judge [Juan] Merchan\u2019s daughter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This has been a sore spot for some Republicans, who have taken note that Judge Merchan\u2019s daughter, Loren Merchan, is a rather prolific Democratic operative whose legislative clients have fundraised some serious bucks off of former President Donald Trump\u2019s hush-money case in Manhattan, which Judge Merchan is presiding over, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/03\/30\/us-news\/dem-clients-of-daughter-of-judge-in-trump-trial-raised-90m-off-case\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New York Post<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The judge has imposed a gag order preventing Trump from talking about his daughter, despite the obvious appearance of a conflict of interest.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/dem-rep-jasmine-crockett-flips-starts-screaming-biden-impeachment-hearing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Crockett<\/a> demanded that Greene explain \u201cwhat that has to do with Merrick Garland\u201d and asked her, \u201cDo you know what we\u2019re here for?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think you know what you\u2019re here for,\u201d Greene replied. \u201cI think your fake eyelashes are messing up what you\u2019re reading.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This exchange prompted a number of prominent Democrats to flip out, none more so than AOC.<\/p>\n<div id=\"firefly-poll-container\">\n<p>Are you satisfied with the job Congress is doing?<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cThat is absolutely unacceptable!\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/alexandria-ocasio-cortez-triggered-jesus-commercial-super-bowl\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ocasio-Cortez<\/a> shouted at the Georgia congresswoman.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow dare you attack the physical appearance of another person?\u201d she continued, asking the chair to \u201cmove her words down.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAre your feelings hurt?\u201d Greene responded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOh girl, baby girl!\u201d AOC hit back. \u201cDon\u2019t even play!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Greene then challenged AOC to a debate, with Ocasio-Cortez saying it was \u201cself-evident\u201d why she wouldn\u2019t. \u201cYeah, you don\u2019t have enough intelligence,\u201d Greene hit back.<\/p>\n<p>The Georgia congresswoman agreed to strike her words from the record, but AOC continued to demand an apology.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re not going to do a smarmy apology. She has to actually apologize. And that needs to be up to Ms. Crockett as well,\u201d Ocasio-Cortez said. \u201cIt needs to be sincere.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After the chair of the committee, GOP Rep. James Comer of Kentucky, moved to strike the words, Crockett then launched a personal attack of her own under the auspices of asking what a personal attack constituted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m just curious. To better understand your ruling, if someone on this committee then starts talking about somebody\u2019s bleached blonde, bad-built, butch body, that would not be engaging in personalities, correct?\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA what, now?\u201d Comer said, adding \u201cI have no idea what you just said.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>WARNING: The following video contains graphic language that some viewers will find offensive.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">This video lays out what happened in tonight\u2019s heated exchange in the oversight hearing <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/7QTmpsa1eA\">pic.twitter.com\/7QTmpsa1eA<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Acyn (@Acyn) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Acyn\/status\/1791314730063466704?\">May 17, 2024<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>This, of course, is a slam on Greene\u2019s appearance, somewhat obviating the need for Greene to apologize. (Not to mention the fact that the use of the word \u201cbutch\u201d to describe MTG, a former <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/ken-buck-marjorie-taylor-greene-crossfit-constitution-2020-election-impeachment-2023-9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CrossFit instructor<\/a>, is more than a little homophobic. But homophobia is OK so long as a Democrat does it, right?)<\/p>\n<p>After Crockett continued to demand clarification, <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/05\/17\/us-news\/house-hearing-on-garland-devolves-into-chaos-involving-mtg-aoc-amp-crockett\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the Post<\/a> noted, GOP Rep. Anna Paulina Luna of Florida told her to \u201ccalm down.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo! Don\u2019t tell me to calm down because y\u2019all talk noise and then you can\u2019t take it!\u201d she <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/trump-legal-team-files-appeal-after-obama-judge-dismisses-lawsuit-seeking-to-block-pennsylvania-from-certifying-its-results\/\" title=\"Trump Legal Team Files Appeal After Obama Judge Dismisses Lawsuit Seeking to Block Pennsylvania From Certifying Its Results\">shot back<\/a>. \u201cBecause if I come and talk s*** about her, y\u2019all gonna have a problem!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Crockett would later take to social media to go on about \u201cPEOPLE IN GLASS HOUSES!\u201d and \u201cmentally deficient people who can\u2019t read and follow rules.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">So MTG wanted to talk about my appearance in COMMITTEE?!<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s against the rules to do\u2026<\/p>\n<p>She refused to apologize!<\/p>\n<p>The chairman ruled that it was ok\u2026<\/p>\n<p>AND I asked for clarification about what qualifies as \u201cengaging in personalities\u201d<br \/> &#038; basically wanted to know if I could\u2026<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Jasmine Crockett (@JasmineForUS) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JasmineForUS\/status\/1791279505669083647?\">May 17, 2024<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>So, good to know that she continues to take the high road.<\/p>\n<p>The committee later voted to send the contempt of Congress resolution to the full House \u2014 but not before Greene, AOC and Crockett explored both the bonuses and the drawbacks of the Streisand effect.<\/p>\n<p>The Streisand effect, named after the singer\/actress and noted Democrat donor Barbra Streisand, is when your actions to try to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/officials-say-meena-harris-social-media-posts-could-interfere-with-u-s-diplomacy-with-india\/\" title=\"Officials say Meena Harris social media posts could interfere with U.S. diplomacy with India\">draw attention<\/a> away from an issue instead draw attention <em>to<\/em> it. While this effect is hardly new, Streisand had it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.techdirt.com\/2005\/01\/05\/since-when-is-it-illegal-to-just-mention-a-trademark-online\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">named after her<\/a> when she tried to suppress online photos of coastal erosion in California which showed her mansion. The pictures, hardly viewed before then, became an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.techdirt.com\/2003\/06\/24\/photo-of-streisand-home-becomes-an-internet-hit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">internet sensation<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In this case, the exchange \u2014 otherwise petty, if energetic, chaos \u2014 drew attention to two facts.<\/p>\n<p>First, both Attorney General Garland and the Biden administration don\u2019t want Congress to hear the recordings of the president\u2019s interview with special counsel Hur, despite the fact that they\u2019re the source of considerable contentiousness over both whether or not Biden should have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/watch-priceless-look-hurs-face-finally-admits-biden-lied\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">been charged with mishandling classified information<\/a> and whether or not the president<a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/transcript-bidens-infamous-special-counsel-interview-released-even-worse-previously-thought\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> has the mental stamina<\/a> to complete another term.<\/p>\n<p>Second, while it\u2019s not a fact that the media likes to emphasize, the judge in the Trump case \u2014 who hasn\u2019t exactly been impartial, even by the low standards of the jurisdiction he presides over \u2014 has a daughter who\u2019s a major Democratic operative.<\/p>\n<p>Disagree with the means if you want to; heaven knows MTG has given both Republicans and Democrats enough reasons to do that over the past few months. As for the ends, however, you can\u2019t deny it got results \u2014 and that\u2019s almost entirely <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/watch-aoc-calls-protesters-non-violent-leader-caught-saying-zionists-deserve-die\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">on AOC<\/a> and Rep. Crockett.
